Hobby history: First checklists of T209, T210, T211, T212 (1942-43)

As part of my series of posts on material from the first five years of Card Collector's Bulletin (1939-1944), I recently posted the first printed checklist of T206 (then known as #521), compiled by Jefferson Burdick and Lionel Carter and printed over four issues of CCB in 1941:

Then I posted the first checklists of T201, T202, T204, T205, and T207, printed in CCB in 1940 and 1941:

This post includes the checklists of the minor league sets now known as T209 through T212 (then known as #524 through #525 and #595), printed in CCB in 1942 and 1943. These sets were not nearly as well documented as the big major league baseball sets, so only Burdick's checklist for T209-1 (the color Contentneas) was complete, and that set only contains 16 cards. John Wagner, whose copies of CCB these were, collected T210 and T212, and annotated the checklists of those two sets with his own notes and additions. He apparently found several new T210s that Burdick hadn't seen, and found some of the "150 subjects" 1910 Obaks.

The first two pages below are the checklist of T209 from the August 1, 1943 CCB (#25), with the end of the checklist just taking up the first couple of lines on the second page.

Next is the four-page checklist of T210 and the checklist of T211, both from the June 1, 1943 CCB (#24), with John Wagner's annotations on the former. Following the T210 list, which only includes 383 cards, I've added Bob Solon's article about T210s that appeared in CCB 23 years later in 1966. As Solon notes, Charles Bray's 1950 Book of Checklists listed 531 cards (so almost 150 new cards were discovered in seven years), and the 1960 ACC had the set at 563. Solon reported on 29 new T210 cards that brought the total known to 609, but he surmised (correctly) that there were more to be discovered. (30 more have come to light in the last 51 years, making a total of 639.)

Finally, there is the four-page checklist of T212, which was spread out between the February 1 and April 1, 1942 issues of CCB (#16 and #17). As a bonus, the last page also contains checklists of T208 and T203, also the first known for those sets. Before the T212 checklist I've included Burdick's note from the February 1 issue, in which he gives credit for the checklist to Charles Bray, who had bought a near-set of Obaks from a former ballplayer named Fred E. Peters. Burdick says that Peters had played professionally for Spokane and Tacoma and had cards of himself, but if so, I don't know what sets he would have been in. He was not in T212, but he might have been in one or more Zeenut sets. I can't find him on baseballreference.com, and I don't have time to look through Zeenut checklists.

Wow great articles! I would love to have a copy of the T210 pages if you would be so kind. Its a great look at the early history of the T210 set and the check listing. That is a piece of hobby history, thanks for sharing as always.

Jason, I figured you would like these, especially the T210 one. If you PM me your email address, I can send you the photos of the T210 pages, if that will make it easier for you to print them out or do whatever you want with them.
