No decent baseball card store in NYC

How depressing is that. I've scoped out 2 or 3, one just a few days ago, and they've all been pretty lame. I guess you can't pay the big city rent anymore on the back of baseball cards and autographed balls. In a city with 500 places selling poke bowls, you'd think a few cards stores could thrive. Nope.

The only shop I go to is Chameleon Comics but I only go to them to buy Hobby boxes.

I was there this week. A handful of pre 1950 cards. Two displays. Nice for what it is, but I'm a vintage collector of pre war and that was non existent essentially. (Might have seen a single Goudey card?)

Brigandi on W44 was pretty cool in its day. Last time I walked by looked like they've left the building.

You hit the nail on the head. Even if there was a shop with everything you could ever want, they would be asking so much for it just to pay the rent that you wouldn't buy anything. In fact, you'd probably come on here and complain about the awesome shop you found with the astronomical prices :)

Rookiemonster 06-21-2017 03:22 PM

I prefer any I've been to in NYC over any I've been to in New Jersey. But maybe because I've had to deal with having maybe the worst one in Jersey being the nearest to me. The guys just sits in the back on the computer. Everything it over priced and he will not negotiate. I also have heard a ton of people say he sell fake autographs. The spot is for the true suckers that think they know the hobby. Then get ripped a new one with a smile on there face.

Prob true. Brigandi used to have some pretty nice stuff. And it was all insanely marked up.

Sportsnutcards 06-21-2017 04:46 PM

We have quite a few good ones in New Jersey depending on what you are looking for. In total there are probably about 40 stores across the state that sell cards.... Also I think brigandi is still in business.

KingFisk 06-21-2017 05:44 PM

Are there any good ones in Essex, Morris or Union counties?

Check out- Gotta Have It on East 57th. Ask about cards (typically hidden away), but some nice memorabilia.

GregMitch34 06-21-2017 06:44 PM

What happened to Alex's on Upper East Side? Comics and cards. Has or had antique furniture store across the street also.

Got my greatest bargain ever there--30 years ago--ungraded Marquard CJ--turned out to be top-graded PSA 7.

Cmount76 06-21-2017 06:46 PM

There are a couple out on Long Island; the names are escaping me right now and American Legends in Westchester County that are pretty good and fairly priced.

I know that Mark at American Legends only keeps some of his vintage out in the showcase because they are taken up by shiny new refractors, but if you ask, he has a solid selection in the back.

KMayUSA6060 06-21-2017 06:56 PM

It shocks me how so many people are surprised by this.

I used to go there when I lived on the UES and grab whatever Fisk cards they pulled. Nice guys there. We moved to NJ in 2009, so no clue if they are still around.

Haven't seen anyone who is surprised by it ...... just disappointed.

judsonhamlin 06-22-2017 04:43 AM

The only ones I know of are Attack of the BB Cards (mostly new/shiny)and a small place on Rte 28 in Roselle that has some 60's and 50's but also more new stuff. Name escapes me at the moment.

Indeed, but they do have some cool stuff. Walked through on numerous lunch hours.

They were renovating their space last time I walked by. Wasn't sure if they were moving, shutting down, etc.

Ok, I'll be the uncool guy and ask.

What the _ is a poke bowl?

Alex MVP is still around, but they moved to a new location a bit farther from the nearby trains and buses.

Theres a lot of nice looking young ladies that buy poke bowls...its not exactly the same demographic that are set builders.... if you told me there are 500 successful video arcades in the city that would be different..

It's like crudo, but in a bowl.

trdcrdkid 06-22-2017 10:31 AM

I had never heard of either poke bowls or crudo before reading this thread, which I guess means I'm not hip. But now that I've googled them both, I have some idea what people are talking about. Carry on.

Surprised to hear this. I bought this Wagner from them for $1,000, which I thought was a pretty good deal:

Do you mean insanely hacked up? Certainly back in the days of SCD ads they had that reputation.

Thanks! Hit up Bob Beck in Livingston today. He had some decent pre and post war stuff. Had a nice conversation with him about vintage, so a successful visit just for the cameraderie.

Attack of the BB Cards was when I lived in NJ, and believe still is, Steve Mandy who is a nice guy. You'll enjoy talking to him at the very least

Went there once. Believe it is attached to a batting cage facility. Nice guy.

LEHR 06-23-2017 06:10 AM

I to had to Google poke bowls. Uhh...no thanks, I'd rather starve.

As far as Brigandi; I follow them on Instagram. They are still in business but the location moved a few months ago.

swarmee 06-23-2017 06:17 AM

I had heard of both Pokeballs and Poke Bowls, and figured that they were getting mixed up in this thread. I guess not. Although I'm sure there are more stores that sell Pokemon items in NYC than dedicated baseball card shops.

Me neither. I'm also uncool enough to need to google both.

sooo..........Sushi without the rolling it up, just getting it all into a bowl.
Nope, not for me.

Can't say anything about NY cardshops, I try to avoid NY if it's at all possible.

I don't know if this baseball card place in Harlem is still open. It's shown 20:17 into the documentary:
