Mastro - any winners out there?

Posted By: Brian McQueen

I was really fighting with someone out there over this but I did manage to pick up the e97 handcut group - lot #2172. Kind of a unique lot and I've never seen a "handcut" sort of e97 or even knew that they existed before now.

How did everyone else do?

Posted By: quan
congrats that's a very interesting lot. u paid less than half of what the whole sheet got and you have all the hof'ers in there. the whole sheet still went for less than the e93s...can't explain that one either. i think u did very well along with the complete sheet owner.

Posted By: scott brockelman
won quite a few W600's, was able to pick up 2 players Hustings and Wilson, who appear on no regular issues, lost out on the other obsure player with no known cards(Castro) the winner really wanted that one, as we were one of the last lots to close and the price must be a record for a W600 common, nearly 5k with the juice. Perhaps he is a player collector and needed the image?

Scott

Posted By: scott brockelman
harder than I wished, I was the underbidder, I gave up after being outbid several times at the end and decided to concentrate on the commons I needed, plus I thought I was going to need money for the following day, which as it turned out I didn't and now wish I had bid 1 more time.

To answer your question, it's only the 2nd one I have seen in over 10 years.

Scott

Mastro - any winners out there?

Posted By: Jerry Spillman
I am aware of just three players that have green mount SL cabinets. Lajoie, Waddell and Wallace. Possibly the accelerated demand for the early cabinets was greater than the supply of the regular tan mounts and the green mounts were used as temporary substitutes. Undoubtly there were other players that have green mount cabinets but I have no report of any.

Although Louis Castro had a very short major league career he played on the 1902 American League Champion Philadelphia Athletics. This is likely the reason that more of his cabinets were purchased than would have been otherwise. There are other Louis Castro SL cabinet survivors.

Louis Castro is a record price paid for a common player as far as I know. Could it be his name?

Posted By: scott brockelman
Jerry & others,

Louis "Jud" Castro only played a short time in 1902, but is considered by some the first Latin player in MLB. I did not know this prior to the auction, My wife said I was a dumbass for not doing my homework, not exactly in those words but you get the idea. Had I known of this I would have I would have bid a bit more, however I beleive the winner would have just kept going, he contacted me earlier today and was quite pleased with his win, something he had searched for quite some time, at least I lost out to a good home. And yes I believe it is certainly a record for a "common" W600.

Jerry,

Do you think that these high grade W600's could be from the group that surfaced in the late 1980's, at a Kentucky show? I believe? They were said to be 400 unissued cards all in glassines, it figured the lesser known players would have been overproduced and underordered leaving a glut of extras.

Scott
