the most collectors

Which state do you think has the most card collectors ?

Imo I think it's New Jersey. I'm from nj and I've noticed a lot of collectors on here also reside in NJ. So my vote would be the NJ/NY area .

lgbbcards 07-07-2016 09:00 AM

I agree, there is a bunch of collectors in NJ, but I see a lot of guys in PA still sticking with the hobby. The local card auctions still have a decent draw. I have sold a bunch of cards to Michigan too.

KingFisk 07-07-2016 09:08 AM

NJ here.

I will go with California.

Could just be the mix of cards I have sold.

NJ or NY seem like great choices too as so many sports teams are located there.

iwantitiwinit 07-07-2016 09:40 AM

Wouldn't it be logical that the state having the largest population by far would have the largest number of collectors. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say California. Largest number per capita is a different story and I have no clue what that answer would be.

Paul S 07-07-2016 10:28 AM

A narrow sample group

As a regular seller on our BST, the majority of my auctions are won by southeastern seaboard states: VA, NC, SC and GA.
NJ and FL also very good, as well as PA, OH, IN and WI.
WA keeps a good pace.
TX sometimes
CA seldom.
MT and WY once each.
On occasion, a stray calf goes out to ND.

I live in NY. Very unscientific, I know - maybe it's just the kind of stuff I sell(?)

What about SD Paul I know I have bought more than MT and WY combined on your list.:) Or was dealing with me so bad you want to forget about it?

EDIT: I know of at least 3 members from SD on here. Per capita that has to get us close to the top of the list.:)

Paul S 07-07-2016 11:20 AM

Ben, that was my bad. I lost my compass.

7nohitter 07-07-2016 11:44 AM

Massachusetts here! My wife would have you believe I account for 50% of baseball card purchases in this state alone.

I know I'm in trouble when she's home and the mailman walks to the door with multiple bubble mailers!!

There's a punch line to this question that's just too easy, so I'll avoid it.

I'll agree with NJ.

Shoeless Moe 07-07-2016 01:17 PM

Leon, could you give a breakdown of Net54 members by state, that might give a more accurate answer.

I know not every collector is on here, but would give a clearer picture.

GasHouseGang 07-07-2016 04:07 PM

Well, I think the dealers probably choose to go where the most collectors are when they can. So if we look at the National Baseball Card Collectors Convention, and where it's being held as an indication, maybe we can tell. I categorized each location as either East Coast, Midwest, or California. I'm sure it can be debated whether TX is Midwest, or if OH is East Coast, but here are the locations where it has been held since 1980.

1980 Los Angeles, CA California
1981 Detroit, MI Midwest
1982 St. Louis, MO Midwest
1983 Chicago, IL Midwest
1984 Parsippany, NJ East Coast
1985 Anaheim, CA California
1986 Dallas-Fort Worth, TX Midwest
1987 San Francisco, CA California
1988 Atlantic City, New Jersey East Coast
1989 Chicago, IL Midwest
1990 Dallas-Fort Worth, TX Midwest
1991 Anaheim, CA California
1992 Atlanta, GA Georgia East Coast
1993 Chicago, IL Midwest
1994 Houston, TX Midwest
1995 St. Louis, MO Midwest
1996 Anaheim, CA California
1997 Cleveland, OH Midwest
1998 Chicago, IL Midwest
1999 Atlanta, GA East Coast
2000 Anaheim, CA California
2001 Cleveland, OH East Coast
2002 Chicago, IL Midwest
2003 Atlantic City, NJ East Coast
2004 Cleveland, OH East Coast
2005 Chicago, IL Midwest
2006 Anaheim, CA California
2007 Cleveland, OH East Coast
2008 Chicago, IL Midwest
2009 Cleveland, OH East Coast
2010 Baltimore, MD East Coast
2011 Chicago, IL Midwest
2012 Baltimore, MD East Coast
2013 Chicago, IL Midwest
2014 Cleveland, OH East Coast
2015 Chicago, IL Midwest
2016 Atlantic City, NJ East Coast
2017 Chicago, IL Midwest
2018 Cleveland, OH East Coast
2019 Chicago, IL Midwest

TOTALS
Midwest=19/40=47.5%
East Coast=14/40=35%
California=7/40=17.5%

So, based only on where the National has been held and is planned to be held in the near future, it appears there are probably more dealers and collectors in the Midwest. Not incredibly scientific, but it may be as good as any other indicator.

Aquarian Sports Cards 07-07-2016 05:21 PM

My ebay store sends a TON of stuff to Florida and NJ.

Rookiemonster 07-07-2016 05:26 PM

I like were your head is at David lol. I'm not a seller but when I buy cards off eBay most of the time it's east coast then mid west. NJ,NY,Fl I seem to be where I get most of my cards from.

Aquarian Sports Cards 07-07-2016 05:36 PM

don't know if I like the logic behind Dave M's post. If I was running a truly national show, I would put it central rather often to draw from the widest area. If you go one coast or the other you cut down on getting people from the opposite coast. Put it in Kansas and everyone is only a 3 hour flight or two day drive away.

Gobucsmagic74 07-07-2016 05:43 PM

Florida...eventually

glynparson 07-07-2016 05:45 PM

My guess

Ny, NJ, PA and Ca are some of the states with the most collectors.

I actually agree. Like I said, it's not very scientific. I truly believe there may be more collectors on the East Coast. The National is completely dependent on where the National Committee decides to hold the show, and then everyone just has to follow. But you might assume they want to put it where the collectors are going to show up.

This might sound silly, but from my experience, if you added all the collectors from those 4 states they might be equal to ALL the collectors from the other 46.

Just think how much we could save on shipping if we ALL lived in the same state.

David, although you said the "National Baseball Card Collectors Convention," I assume you meant the National Sports Collectors Convention (alias the "National" and the "NSCC").

Joe_G. 07-07-2016 10:25 PM

On the old board we had a map of Net54 Collectors but that link now appears broken. Maybe someone could repeat the exercise to look at collector population density (don't recall the hosting website that was used last time). It would be voluntary and is a good way to learn which collectors may be nearby. Many forum members may not want to disclose such information (understandable) but if even 25% of the active members participate we would be able to better answer the posed question (many already allow their location to be disclosed in their posts).

Yes. But do those other sports really matter?....... Just kidding!:). Please don't attack!

I think it's when someone goes on the site. Those cities are the top ones listed by number of sessions. Here is another same type report by state (here ya go, Paul) and it has NY and NJ as 2 and 3.
