Today is the anniversary of Clemente's début. I thought I would share this article from yesterdays NY Times. Its about Clemente and the respect Latin players have for him. I know there are a number of Clemente collector here. Please share any memorabilia you may have of the Great One. I'll start with one of my rarest items.

Roberto Clemente
My favorite player of all time, bar none! I have a cool collecting story related to him...
Maybe 10 years ago, I was involved in an REA auction for a ball signed by Puerto Rican players. Roberto was on it, as were Felix Millan, Sixto Lezcano, and a couple others. The REA caption stated there was an unidentified sixth signature, so I magnified it and worked on identifying it... It turned out Vic Power had signed the ball in his true name, "Victor Pellot". I found a couple comparisons, confirmed it was Power/Pellot, and notified REA. They actually credited me online with the work! Now for the cool part...I bid on the ball, sweated it out, and WON. The ball has a place of honor in my collection! |

Thanks, Phil. One of my favorites!

Pretty tough to find Clemente on a sweetspot, even tougher to find one from his rookie season:
