I recently found this vintage 8 x 26 Detroit Tigers pennant. Upon a cursory investigation I couldn't find another one exactly like this one. I am not a pennant guy, so perhaps someone could help out. Any idea of the age and estimated value of this pennant?

Congratulations on your entry to the world of pennants! Its a terrific niche! Your pennant is a nice example from the late 30s-40s. It looks to be in VG shape other than that small hole in the banding and I would place a value in the $100-$115 range. If it was minty perhaps up to $150

That's pretty much the range Egner's book has for it as well with a designation of "rare". Same logo appears on one of my Princeton pennants.

Hey Jim - FWIW, 8x26" pennants are known as 3/4 size. By far the most standard size are the 12x29-30" pennants. "Oversized" pennants are anything over standard, usually starting at 36" long. Another "experts" may correct me, but the 3/4 size seemed most prevalent from the 1920s to the early 1960s.

Agree with Rob. 3/4 Size pennants were very prevalent in the 1940s and well into the '50s.

Especially for the New York Teams... Brooklyn Dodgers, Yankees, and NY Giants pennants of the 1940s-50s are pretty common. An example would be that Willard Mullin Giant/Polo Grounds Pennant featured recently in the main Pennant Thread. The Milwaukee Braves had lots of 3/4 size pennants into the '50s as well.

As for the Tigers Pennant in the original post, I'd say early 1940s, and that Mike H. was spot-on with the price/value assessment. The hole at the bottom of the spine knocks the value down about 30 - 35%. Still a cool pennant!

Thanks for the input guys! I bought it at a local antiques store with the intent of passing it on to someone here who would appreciate it. If one of you who were kind enough to post a reply here is interested please send me a PM, otherwise I'll probably post it on the BST side soon to give others a chance.

For whatever reason, the Tigers blow all other teams away with regards to the attractiveness of their old pennants. And they seem to have more dates versions than other teams.

Gotta agree with Greg...

The Tigers continually produced the best pennants (dated or otherwise...)

Fantastic pennants guys! I can definitely see what you mean about Detroit pennants from that era.

Great stuff, Mike and Rob... those are all such "toughies".

Here are a few more.... of the early/oversized variety. Check out the split-handed grip and sh*t eating grin of the Cobb-inspired Tiger (last one posted). It might be my favorite.

As a long time Detroit Tigers collector I can appreciate the difficulty of your oversized Tigers pennants Perezfan. Incredible!

The Tigers also made a pretty sweet banner in 68 to celebrate their WS victory.

I think the Tyger is my favorite too. Awesome pennants.
