Posted By: barrysloate
Since I have been asked by literally hundreds of people (okay, three people) for an early preview of my May 15 auction, here are some of the highlights:

* A nice grouping of 19th century cabinet cards, including a team photo of the 1888 St. Louis Browns, a studio cabinet of Bid McPhee, and Newsboys of George Van Haltren and Parke Wilson.

*Some superb 19th century cards, including a high grade N162 Mike Kelly, high grade N172 Old Judges including Connie Mack, Kid Nichols, Ned Hanlon, Amos Rusie, and the rare Cushman, Toledo.

* Many high quality E-cards, including an E107 Type 2 of Rube Waddell, numerous Honus Wagner and Christy Mathewson cards, and many rare issues such as E103 and E106.

* A superb group of tobacco cards, including many high grade T206 Hall of Famers and rare backs, some high quality T205's and some rare T207's.

* Many high quality 1930's gum cards, including a nice group of EX-MT and NR MT Hall of Famers.

And that's it, there's absolutely nothing else...well in truth, there's MUCH, MUCH MORE, but everyone says that and I like to be different.

That's just a smattering to whet your appetite.
Posted By: john/z28jd
You know if enough people ask we will basically be able to piece together the whole auction or possibly end it early. Barry I'd like you to end the Cushman card early and I'm willing to pay partially in cash and the rest could be pictures of me and the Cushman card doing things together(clean things!) like riding a roller coaster, sharing an ice cream float, watching a baseball game and me tucking him in the safe at night. The smiles you get from the pictures would far outweigh the money the card is worth and the knowledge that you made me broke,or even worse, sell off something to get it. I trust you'll make the right decision

Posted By: Jay
Barry--If I am not mistaken, Cushman-Toledo was a team variation found in the 1980s. It was for a long time thought to be a very rare card but many copies have surfaced and it is now, at best, just a scarcer than average card.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
Okay, got a question that's probably been answered a million times, but here goes...lot 91 is listed as "Harry McIntyre" when it is clearly "Matty McIntyre"....the card doesn't say "Harry" on it anywhere so why did PSA slab this as "Harry"?

Posted By: barrysloate
Wow, even I didn't know it was mislabeled. I think any time two contemporary players share a last name, there is a chance for this kind of error. How did Irv Young get confused with Cy Young, or Larry Doyle with Joe?

For that matter, look at lot #112. How does Miller Huggins get confused with Harry Howell (not a good day for Harrys).

Posted By: Dan Bretta
In this case I don't think it's necessarily PSA's fault as it's listed as Harry McIntyre in one of my old SCD's and even VCP (who has it listed correctly as a Matty McIntyre card) has this card listed as "Harry on the card" which I don't understand because the Ramly's don't have first names anywhere on the card.

Posted By: barrysloate
Harry was a pitcher for Brooklyn and I think Chicago, and both McIntyre's are in the T205 and T206 set. So PSA should have labeled it Matty, who played outfield for Detroit (I've already corrected it on my website).

Posted By: Dan Bretta
Barry, you and I would know that, but the person that grades thousands of ballplayer cards probably just looks at the checklist and I'm guessing when this got slabbed the checklist said "Harry McIntyre".

Posted By: barrysloate
Absolutely correct (even though I blew the call). But that was my original point earler in the thread- that a printer/designer would not know the players either, thus picturing Irv Young on an E97 and calling it Cy Young.

PSA should have at least known that Harry McIntyre is not in the T204 set. Do the graders have easy access to set checklists? That would be a useful tool.
