Posted By: <b>E, Daniel</b><p>Talking to a fellow hobbyist the other night, I realized one of us wasn't even in the ball park.<br /><br />He twanged "LA - JO (the J sound given a french sounding Je, as in Je m'appelle) - WAY".<br /><br />I've always gone for a "LA - HO - EE".<br /><br /><br />Can anyone set me on the straight and narrow as to be prepared for future discussions with other collectors?<br /><br /><br />Thanks<br />Daniel

Posted By: <b>E, Daniel</b><p>Reading that his parents were french canadian, I was wondering....<br />Looking at his countenance and physical features, coupled with the name, I'd always assumed his heritage to perhaps have been Native American - hence my pronounciatioin of "La-ho-ee". Anyone know anything further about his parentage, and if they were originally European or from the North American continent?<br /><br />Having taken some French at school (<img src="/images/happy.gif" height=14 width=14>), it also does not seem to be a natural pronounciation of the name...indeed I'm not sure I've heard a J pronounced anything other than the Je sound I initally mentioned. The name to me would be said reasonable phonetically if spoken with a French intonation..?<br /><br />Daniel

And the double c would make a "k" (or if from south Italy, it could be interpreted a little duller, almost a "g" - Imagine the Soprano's pronunciation of cappicola - Sounds like Tony says GabbaGoul - Phoenoms are not possible as I have a standard keyboard, and when we Americanize words, we ruin the actual pronunciation of things, like pure (non-diphthong) vowels... which we don't HAVE in this country (especially if you live in the south, lol)<br /><br />My Vote is for Chi-goat (rhymes with Tea-coat) - no need for the final "e" sound - Italian has silent letters which we overlook in our attempt to americanize everything<br /><br />and while I like the "Laj Wah" (and agree with the pronunciation), I ALWAYS called him La-Joe, it doesn't matter too much, and you're always going to find someone willing to argue with you over these things. <br /><br />

Quite tame by today's interactions ..... <img src="/images/happy.gif" height=14 width=14><br /><br />My theory is you can pronounce it any way you want, as did they did back then, and now.<br /><br />I used to work with a great guy who's last name was Cierko. He pronounced it "Cy-er-ko." So everyone at work pronounced it that way. Every once in a while you'd have someone call for him and ask for Mr. "Ser-ko." Well, you would politely correct the pronunciation to the caller, and forward the call. One day I get a call for Mr. Ser-ko, and I let the caller know it's pronounced Cy-er-ko, and the caller responds: "This is his brother, and it's pronounced Ser-ko !!!!!"<br /><br />Conversely, I knew an elderly brother and sister who pronounced their last name the same, but spelled it differently (Apostolaris vs. Apostolares) ...<br /><br /><br />Thanks for listening, I've been waiting almost 4 years to post this thought (or lack there of) ....<br /><br /><br />Oh, and by the way ...<br />Gross -- long O -- good<br />Gross -- rhymes with Cross -- bad

According to Cobb himself, the pronunciation of "Lajoie" is Laz-jo-way (soft z and j). I've got the book in front of me, will find exact page reference this weekend.

My extended family has a "Young Frankenstein" party every few years - bring snacks and drinks and everyone from Grandma and Grandpa (my parents) to the youngest nieces and nephews sit down and watch the whole movie - all 23 of us. I thought that's how it was supposed to be pronounced, but not sure why I think that.<br /><br />I also say GOO - dee, but every time I hear someone else say it they say "GOW -dee". On the 3rd cd, track 1, is Larry Ritter talking with Smokey Joe Wood. Wood played with Lajoie. First Ritter, and then Wood, both pronounce it the same way... which is the way I suggested in that other thread.<br /><br />I really think these guys had it right. Listening to that cd is a great experience, well worth the cost of the cds. I recommend buying an unslabbed set of the cds so that you can actually enjoy them.
