Wagner vs cobb vs ruth
 

While some collectors have the ability to stockpile cards of all three, others seem to focus on collections that predominantly feature one of these legends. Interested in which of these guys you choose to focus on and why...

For me it`s Babe Ruth and for some it may sound like an odd reason, affordability. Because the Babe had such a long and storied career his image and other collectables were many. Magazines, sheet music, playing cards, books etc. are just a few such items. If you find a niche and keep your eyes open you can collect nice pieces of the Babe for reasonable prices.

I collect cobb and ruth...almost equally...because they are the top 2 all time...have interesting stories...And will always be desired

When I entered the pre-war arena I was dead-set on collecting Ruth. After all, he is the undisputed King of baseball. I quickly bought up maybe 12-15 or so Ruths while at the same time buying the occasional Ty Cobb. But when I looked at my cards, I found that I was more drawn to my Cobbs than I was to Ruth. The problem was that Ruth came into the game right after the beautiful T cards and Cracker Jacks. While I think that there are some very attractive Ruth poses, the 20’s wasn’t exactly the golden age of baseball cards. It wasn’t until the American Caramel and Goudey sets, very late in Ruth’s career, that his cards became more attractive. So I decided to focus on Ty Cobb. I loved his t206s, e95, T3, CJ, and t227, etc. Then I discovered his rare PCs and got hooked.

Collecting Ruth is like collecting Superman; Cobb is the evil villain. I kind of like that. I’ve recently started to buy Wagner PCs. I don’t love Wagner’s standard cards because let’s face it: the dude was ugly. Also I find that a lot of the e-cards are artist’s renderings that don’t really resemble him (which could be a good thing considering how ugly that guy was). I do like some of his postcards, so I’ve bought a few of those. But Cobb is my guy for some of the reasons stated above. You obviously can’t go wrong with any of them.

I feel this way about Shoeless Joe in the PreWar space and it is why I loved the hunt for his rookie and CJ. One day, Old Mill, one day.

I look at my ruth collection and it's almost exclusively black and white/sepia...as I have no goudeys....my cobbs are much more colorful!!!!

I own three Goudeys and a US Caramel, so I need some b/w

I do not own a single Cobb or Wagner at present. I would like to one day, but my next "big" card will probably be another Ruth

I collect all of 'The First Five' however, my pockets are not nearly as deep as some resulting in more Mattys and WaJos.

Ruth is the standard for pre-war, but Cobb and Honus are very collectible as well...I believe all three are excellent in terms of retained value.

But I love them all.

For me Wagner

I’m a die hard Pirates fan. For most of my life I dreamt about Wagner and his cards. Never crossed my mind that I’d ever own one or any memorabilia related to him.

So many reasons for loving Wagner. His gentle nature. His competitive drive. His success. The mystery of the t206.

Babe Ruth. Baseball fans know all three players, non baseball fans know Ruth. That's why I only invest in Ruth outta the three guys you mentioned.
