Twas the night before REA......

Seems like one of the most anticipated nights of the collecting year...I put it right up there in terms of excitement when I am ready to head to the National...

Even though I am a small time collector and the stuff on this auction is likely never going to be in my budget, I still marvel at the items in their incredible catalog each and every auction.

Here's hoping there are some golf cards or maybe a Sam Crawford lot or two that I can at least consider.

What on your wish list of things you are hoping to see?

Saw them at the Valley Forge show

A pretty awesome selection of material. The T206 rare back group is unreal - too many to drool over. Sadly not going to have some items I was anticipating from Larry's collection - summer I'm told. Plenty more I'm sure that they didn't have with them.

I sure hope the items that I've been anticipating that Larry told me about over a year ago are in this auction, since I was disappointed they weren't in either of last year's two REA auctions. I guess I'll find out tomorrow!

Collectors had iPads, still snug in their beds
Posting firesale dumps on BST threads

And Mama in her kerchief and I in my cap,
Staring at cardboard piles of crap

When REA opened, it caused such a clatter
I checked my paypal, but the bank account was fatter

I placed all my bids, so lovely and quick
But alas, was outbid and it made me sick

Imagine how long the wait will be once it opens and you have to wait for the auction to close...This is just a warm up.

Yes, you're right, but once it opens I'll have beautiful things to look at to distract me.

One less bidder to ruin my dreams! :D

jcmtiger 03-06-2019 11:38 AM

Don't see the Spring auction, where is it?

sb1 03-06-2019 12:40 PM

If it's like the last one, it will probably open at 5:00 EST

Republicaninmass 03-06-2019 12:53 PM

More rapid than eagles, the lot they came,
He whistled and shouted and call them by name:

On Gehrig, on Mantle, on Cobb and mathew-son
on, Lajoie, on Johnson, and plank, and Joe Jackson

to the max of VCP, to the max bid, top them all
outbid them, out bid them, outbidding them all

And then in a twinkling, I saw on my screen
The prancing of pre-war cards yet to be seen

As I drew in my head and was turning around
Robert Edward Auctions sweet-scented catalog appeared with a bound

My eyes, how they twinkled, my grinning, how merry
The E98s like roses, the E94s like a cherry

With drool from my mouth dripping down in a bow
I saw borders on T206s white as the snow

tazdmb 03-06-2019 01:16 PM

It's Open!

AGuinness 03-06-2019 01:56 PM

There's some amazing stuff there...
I saw something that made my heart jump, and while I knew there was no way I'd end up with it, I put a bid in just to be the highest bidder for a while on it. I thought it would make me feel better (while offering the tiniest shred of hope) and figured my bid might last a few days.
And no joke - my high bid lasted all of 19 seconds. But what a great 19 seconds they were!

vthobby 03-06-2019 02:16 PM

Wow!

So many rare things including some GOLD 1955 Armour Coins which you just don't see anywhere! I saw 3 different, not sure if I missed any?

Incredible selection!

Peace, Mike

Stuff you search all year long for suddenly appear on this auction. Some even multiple offerings. Hats off to the REA crew for obtaining these consignments. It’s the cream of the crop. My bid is in. I wish you all luck! May your dreams come true. :D

egri 03-06-2019 03:15 PM

Plenty of eye candy there, but unfortunately I think I’m going to be priced out. If the partially signed 1953 Topps set was two lots, one signed the other not, then I might have a shot, but not with them both combined.

ooo-ribay 03-06-2019 05:04 PM

I can't afford anything they sell. :(

sycks22 03-06-2019 06:26 PM

I was baffled at the Burkett Just So. Never seen it. I have my 74 place holders in.

pokerplyr80 03-06-2019 07:35 PM

Lots of great stuff as always. I threw a few early bids just to make sure I'm in before extended bidding starts. I will probably get priced out but you never know. Fun either way.

There are so many rare T206 backs, in your mind starts to make you think they aren't that rare anymore.

I got the box. An open ripped up box was on the porch with a note saying that our post office received it that way.

Catalog arrived yesterday was too busy to post that detail

h2oya311 03-12-2019 11:58 AM

Is it me, or does the REA catalog smell worse than in years prior??

Yeah, mine kind of smells like broken dreams and delaying retirement just a little longer...

Mine came with a damaged box, too, although not as bad as yours. It's a beast of a catalogue, looking forward to flipping through with my boys!

As my auctions are typically of the eBay variety, do people tend to wait until the last day/last hour to submit bids in these as well? Not sure if all my excitement will be for naught like the final ten seconds on eBay. Some things are still reasonable. For now (even with the premium).

Don't put much stock in items that look like a bargain right now. Most people rush to get their bids in on the first day or two, so they are eligible to participate in extended bidding. But it is not unusual for prices to double, triple, etc. during extended bidding.

clydepepper 03-14-2019 12:06 PM

My catalog arrived today...again, the Catalog itself is a work of art (and box was fully intact), but nothing showing from my short, very specific 'Shopping List'- and I don't have the wallet to treat their auction like an impulse counter.

Good Luck to Everyone else!

pawpawdiv9 03-14-2019 01:22 PM

Just opened my catalog. Actually i dropped it on the floor upstairs and it went 'boom' like a sack of concrete. Good thing it didnt land on my foot.

Goudey77 03-14-2019 02:25 PM

My catalog delivery came with a big hole on the side of the box as well. This might be a common thing with USPS and heavier items.

On a side note the REA items are great. But I am noticing a drop in card offerings. Could there be a shift in market consignment trends? Or are people just not selling as much these days?
I'm comparing notes to when I was really in the market looking for tickets and cards 2013-2014, seems there were more abundance of these several years ago.

brianp-beme 03-14-2019 06:11 PM

My delivery box also had a hole. The box is much larger than the catalog, and the catalog was turned so that the side opposite the spine was resting against one side of the panel flaps, and between the spine and the other end of the box was a gap of multiple inches that had a scrunched up section of paper. The long side panel in the area with the scrunched up paper was where my gaping hole was, so no harm no foul.

Still, lopsided packaging like this can cause shipping issues. As a note, REA does pack their auction items with extra care.

Brian

Wish they didn't send me a catalog at all. I'm cool with the website.

Steve - did you receive a catalog for this auction? Back in September you asked to stop receiving the catalog, so we removed your name. I just checked the mailing list for this auction and your name wasn't on it. If you received a catalog, please let me know because that means someone other than me is sending our printer a mailing list.

Anyone who wishes to stop receiving a catalog, just drop us an e-mail or send me a PM. Happy to oblige. Also, anyone who receives a damaged or missing catalog, let us know and we'll happily replace it. There's usually a few every auction, usually less than one tenth of one percent of what we send out but it happens. I try and reach out to anyone who says theirs was missing, but I have to get a response to figure out where to send the replacement (and I don't always get a response!).

Thank you to all for the bids so far and thanks to all the consignors who made this auction possible. Looking forward to a fun final ten days.

Brian
