Academy Awards Musings

Thought I'd start a thread for any movie fans who want to make random comments/thoughts about this years Academy Awards, next Sunday night I think.

I think A Star is Born will likely get shut out of major awards. I think that's a shame, as it was a really good film with two major star turns. Gaga was phenomenal. As a director Bradley Cooper did an amazing job. It's a remake a few times over and I think that will be held against it.

Roma was beautiful and very moving but is not mainstream movie going. Art house fare. Which I do like. But comparing that movie to Bohemian Rhapsody is like comparing obscure experimental to Queen. It will win most of the big awards because (a) it's a beautiful film and (b) academy voters will make a statement about the oppressed poorly treated working class.

Bohemian Rhapsody was really fun and the music is great, and the lead guy playing Freddie was great, but really shouldn't be in any best picture Academy Award discussion.

I don't usually see any of the movies nominated for best picture. This year is an exception by default. Not interested in the least to see 'A Star is Born'. I saw 'Black Panther' only because it was an office outing. I work in a small office with 75% minority and one of the other Caucasians likes superhero movies. I thought it was boring and is only nominated for PC reasons. It should be considered for second tier awards - special effects, etc. Being a fan of Queen I saw 'Bohemian Rhapsody' the first weekend. Good movie, not great, and being a fan I noticed quite a few of the timeline errors and omissions. My favorite movie of 2018 - "Hearts Beat Loud" with Nick Offerman, Kiersey Clemons, Blythe Danner, Toni Collette, Ted Danson and a cameo by Jeff Tweedy from Wilco.
