loc.gov site

...let's see what your search skills come up with, just using sports pics on this site.

I had never seen this one before: 'Ruth knocked out 7/6/24'

On July 5, 1924, in the fourth inning of a game against the Washington Senators, Babe Ruth ran full-force into the wall at Griffith Stadium in Washington and knocked himself out. The photo is incredible.

" The Babe ran into the pavilion parapet with the full force of his body, and dropped unconscious to the grass. Uniformed policeman ran to his assistance and kept back the crowd that seemed disposed to leave the chairs and get a close-up of the injured warrior. Several photographers happened to be on the spot and they snapped the Babe as Trainer Doc Woods ran up with the water bucket and the little black bag of first aid preparations.

At first it was thought that Ruth had been knocked out by a blow from the concrete on his chin, but it was sooon discovered that he had been knocked out by a jolt in the solar plexus. His left leg was also hurt at the hip."

Internet search skills pass or fail?

Cool photo

Scott,

I have actually seen that photo but just in the past year or so and I was also fascinated by it. It is bugging me that I can't remember where I saw it but it might have been just a Google search for Ruth Images.

Incredible photo, history, and story, thanks!

peace, mike

Maybe from this thread in February or the story it links to.

I interpreted his request as being that others should try to find amazing pictures from the Library of Congress site.

Yeah, I think I failed :(

But yes, Mike does have good internet search skills. I found that photo while searching for a 1924 pic of Clark Griffith - my search skills were not so great :)

Whenever I want to see images from the LoC website, I just search ebay for vintage photos... ;)

GoCubsGo32 01-01-2015 11:18 AM

Haha, Lance nailed it. I saw this photo on eBay...lol

Runscott 01-01-2015 11:21 AM

Sorry guys - I don't know how to delete a thread or I would do so.

Meanwhile, please feel free to ignore and visit ebay ;)

thecatspajamas 01-01-2015 12:23 PM

That's not to say that this isn't a good topic for discussion. There is certainly a wealth of quality images on the LoC website, and many that would be interesting to know the whole story on. It's just unfortunate that so many ebay sellers with a desktop printer and pack of photo paper have tapped into it for free source material.

Runscott 01-01-2015 02:23 PM

No problem. I don't search ebay for modern reprints, so while I am aware that they are a problem, and even that many are taken from the loc site, there isn't anyway that they can compete in clarity with the massive TIF files on the loc site. I thought that was obvious, but it could be that you all are missing the download options on each photo's page.

You can download the huge TIF files and then edit on your own - many can be enhanced substantially, not just through cropping, but also to improve exposure, contrast and tint. The Bain photos in particular can stand some clean-up, as many are simply glass negative that haven't held up too well. I needed a good Clark Griffith portrait - here's what I came up with:

It's in Larry Ritter's "Lost Ballparks," page 87, published in 1992. He credits Culver Pictures.

Yes, and the images are so large that they print off great.

Chris - those Paul Thompson portraits are fantastic, and just the right size for computer desktop backgrounds.
