August 21 SABR meeting in Vancouver

Jennifer and I will be hosting another baseball meeting and BBQ in Vancouver on Saturday, August 21. It's at Nat Bailey Stadium, and starts at 1 pm.

It's a Northwest SABR meeting (www.sabr.org). There's no admission charge and all are welcome to attend.

Former ballplayers attend and talk about their playing days. Last year, Ossie Chavarria spoke. There's a Facebook group for the meeting and you can see a video of Ossie's talk here

After the meeting, Jennifer and I will have a BBQ at our place, and there's a game that night at the stadium, with fireworks after the game.

It's a fun event, and only a short 2 hour 15 minute drive from Seattle, and six hours from Portland.

I would love to go to a meeting like that someday . Unfortunately I am on the east coast .

When money is tight and I cant go hunting down cards I want to buy I love to read about baseball history . I have read some pretty good books in the
last year.

Up-date: Ian Dixon, former Yankee farmhand from 1961 to 1964 will be speaking: http://www.baseball-reference.com/mi...d=dixon-001ian. Ian's son Colin was also a minor leaguer, in the Red Sox organization in the 1990s.

I expect to line up at least one more speaker, hopefully a major leaguer, and will let you know.

One added benefit of attending the meeting and bbq: you will have an opportunity to try for high score on the Williams baseball game:

Boy, Max, does that game ever bring back memories! If I recall, it's of early '50's vintage.

When I was a kid on vacation, the hotel lobby in St Louis had this game & I spent every moment when we weren't sight-seeing feeding every nickle I could find into it!

I thought it was the greatest game ever invented!

I've just had it confirmed that Ian's son, Colin, will also be attending. Colin played in the Red Sox organization in the 1990s

This may be the first time father and son ex-ballplayers spoke at a regional SABR meeting--at least it's the first time here in Vancouver

Colin is a great guy. Haven't seen him in a few years. He is a friend of my ex-girlfriend's brother, Patrick Poyner, a West Van boy who was drafted by the Texas Rangers and played in their organization: http://www.baseball-reference.com/mi...d=poyner001pat

I look forward to chatting with him again.

Cheers,
Blair
