M114 Cy Young

I realize with these M114 magazine premiums the years made runs from 1910-50's but does anyone know what year the Cy Young was made specifically? Any help would be appreciated.

Anyone?

Hi-
I know there is a board member that has hundreds of these, but I forget his name. He is an expert on these. I am not 100% sure, but I believe the caption on yours dates it to the 1940s or 1950s. It is much easier to pin down the dates of the larger ones.

The board member who has hundreds of these is Doug Goodman. I'm the other member who has hundreds - except I don't post much.

The Cy Young was - I believe - issued in 1951, which is when Baseball Magazine issued a number of posters of "old timers." They issued new (as opposed to contemporaneous) portraits of Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, Honus Wagner and a few others around this time. Since the M114 set began in 1916 (as a continuation of the larger-sized M113 set, issued 1910 - 1915), there could not have been a Cy Young premium issued during his career. Young also had no M113 poster, as the series began just about the time his career ended.

M114 is a terrific set, especially if you're strong enough to collect a set you'll almost certainly never complete. And don't even get me started on displaying the damned things!

I just looked at the set listing in the Standard Catalog, and the Cy Young is listed as a 1951 issue.

The fact that the Standard Catalogue and I agree - or that the Standard Catalogue agrees with anyone else - is a happy coincidence, little more. There's still a LOT of confusion about issue dates for this set, and there are still many M114's popping up that have never been catalogued. Researchers grinding their way through issues of the magazine have compiled lists of these posters as they were advertised, but the notices of new M114's provided by Baseball Magazine didn't usually include photographs of the new offerings. Which means that it's very difficult to tell when one photo of player X was replaced by another, and it doesn't account for posters that have surfaced that never seem to have been advertised in the magazine! I even have one M113 of a player who's NEVER appeared in a checklist - so who knows?

All that having been said, the Standard Catalogue and I agree that the Cy Young picture is from 1951. I think. :p

I don't know what year any of them were printed, besides what is listed in the catalog, but I do agree with Alan. In fact, because I post more often than he does, some people may consider me the "resident expert" but it's actually him.

Here is my Cy...

Okay, because I've gotten a private message from one reader, I'll expand on my last posting - I never meant to be coy about the mysterious M113 that I have that's never turned up in a checklist. It's Vic Saier, and I've taken a guess that it was issued in 1913. As you can see, it's been trimmed, but it's still very nice. I picked it up (along with several other M113's) at the 1983 National in Parsippany, NJ. That was a thousand years ago, for those of you who are counting.
