Nice Comiskey, Paul.

So far this is the lone win, and I'm pretty happy with it. I don't think I can stomach another bid on the T206 Speaker scrap (oh well).

Great cards guys. CW, I was on that Nap too -- very very pretty -- but man did that thing get expensive; I bowed out at around $1200. Great looking card and great back (front/back combo). Here is what I got, and I am very excited about both. I think these will end my 2017 buying.

Didn't expect to win either of these.

I'm very excited!

I was wondering if the winner of the signed Playball cards lot would be interested in selling the 1941 Play ball #22 Johnson card. Please send me a message if you do. Thanks, Scott.

Does anyone else think that some of the big $$$ items went lower than expected?

Or were the estimates way too high? Any thoughts? PSA 8 Mantle 52 Topps $408K?

Yes Clemente PSA 8 rookie sold heritage $20k. Rose PSA 9 rookie sold $40k. Koufax PSA 9 rookie sold $108k. Alcindor PSA 10 rookie sold $240k. Chamberlain PSA 9 rookie sold $22k are a few examples.

big yes! i was surprised the Goudey Ruth (181) in a PSA 8 sold for 45.6 REA just sold a comparable 8 of that card for $66,000.

i wonder if 52T Mantles, especially low grade ones, are cooling off. Finally.

Brad - I really like that photo of Jennings. From what I understand, he only played in Brooklyn from 1899-1900 and then again in 1903. So, I think your c1895 date can be adjusted upwards by a few years. Really great image though!

I picked up this Perkins Studio Cabinet of Kid Gleason to go along with my Perkins Studio Cab of Jennings (see my avatar):

The Clemente had poor centering for an 8. A Mantle with better centering sold earlier this year for 660k, one with worse centering sold for 384k in August. 408k for the Mantle wasn't that low. None of the cards that I was bidding on went low.

And a 52 mantle topps psa 8 sold for $282k in hunt auctions earlier this year too.

mechanicalman 11-17-2017 09:53 AM

Some great wins.

Chuck, that Nap is T206 perfection!

Ryan, love the Wags and JJ.

I wonder if the lower than expected prices represent auction fatigue. I’ve talked to a couple dudes who have simply spent a ton of money already this year and are holding off for awhile. My bet is prices will start to spike again in Spring.

oldjudge 11-17-2017 10:44 AM

I think the card market, with a few exceptions, is soft now. This is good if you are a buyer, bad if you are a seller. An auction house can only put out the catalog, they can’t make people bid (although Goldin and Hunt with their annoying phone calls sure try).

Hmm..just realized that he is in a Baltimore uniform (I was thinking it was Brooklyn). Dang it! Nice pick-up Brad! The style looks very similar to the mid- to late-1890s Cabinets produced by Betz Studios of Baltimore (missing the black mount). I wonder if that’s where your photo comes from. Might be worth looking into...

quoting myself as I have found the exact same image of Jennings on a Betz Studio Cabinet (from a friend's private collection). I believe these were produced between 1896-1898 based on the subjects who appeared in this "set".

Here's a link to the Betz Studio Keeler that sold at REA back in 2007:

https://bid.robertedwardauctions.com...ce?itemid=9140

Brad - your Jennings image is definitely from Betz Studio and is very likely from this same "set" (as I have seen this exact image of Jennings but with the full black cabinet intact around it). Thought you'd like to know.

Not prewar, but this is a set that has special meaning to me. A longtime dealer I respect a lot, used to always tell me how rare these cards were and how cool they were. Plus, I think he remembered watching the competition live on TV.

I loved watching those old episodes in my younger years...they were "hokey!!!"

Kawika 11-23-2017 11:26 AM

"People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring." - attributed to Rogers Hornsby. Back in the day there wasn't cable TV, 24-7 news cycles, cameras in everyone's faces. Winter meant no baseball. Zero zip nada. In 1960 at least we had Home Run Derby. We got to see our baseball heroes up close in the California sunshine in glorious black-and-white while we were freezing our butts in living color. Home Run Derby was "must see TV" for this erstwhile ten-year old. Very cool pick-up.

The tracking numbers shows up under orders. They also send out an email when the item ships.

Same with me - I paid same day and no tracking number anywhere or shipping email.

Guess I'm not a "big boy" like some others...

botn 11-23-2017 11:41 PM

I paid within minutes of getting the invoice and was notified they were going to wait a couple of weeks before they shipped. Only been buying in every auction since 2008 or so and always pay immediately. After calling them they said they would not wait to ship. Guess I will see if this ends up being true.

I'm not sure how I got on the "nice list" either. I've bought from them here and there (probably about 5 times now), but not sure why my stuff shipped so fast. Very inconsistent w/ what others are reporting. I wonder what put them on the "naughty list"?

Aaron Seefeldt 11-29-2017 12:45 PM

taxes

Several states have to pay taxes with Heritage, including Illinois where I live. I had to add an additional 10.5% sales tax, which is fine as I was fully aware of it going into the auction.

My question is: Why isn't that shown in the final sell price? If a guy pays $100K for an item, then they show the buyer's premium but not the additional tax (if there is one), why wouldn't this be reflected in the final sale price? On a final sale of $100K, that's an additional $10,500 (if you're in Chicago).

sycks22 11-29-2017 02:05 PM

I've always had great experiences with Heritage.

Still waiting for a tracking number. I wired money last Wednesday morning and no tracking number yet. Its comforting to know other people are in same boat; Heritage is usually so quick with shipping
