April pick ups thread

Never started one of these!
This was actually a March pick up, but provides a couple good examples of why I love this site. Based on Ted's prior thread(s), I had learned that the rounded corner variants are indeed 1947 and Jackie's rookie card... and based on one of the 15% off coupon threads, I got a very nice discount. Long live N54! |

I know it's not baseball, but the card doesn't really fit anywhere else on the board. I was finally able to pick up an Amelia Earhart Sky Birds card. The condition pretty much speaks for itself, but I grew tired of waiting for a decent one to show up on eBay. I figure I can always upgrade in the future.
The National Chicle Earhart card has proven to be surprisingly difficult to find a decent copy for a card that has over 100 graded examples. I love history, and Earhart is one of my favorite people to read about. She only has five cards that were issued prior to her disappearance, and the National Chicle card is the only one that is even semi common None of the other options have even 10 graded copies on the PSA pop. chart. |

Cool Collins, Leon. Below is another rare back (and rare front/back combo). Love me the rare HOF stuff. Now, I just need an HOF front 215-1 & -2 for a full HOF T206-front back run.

Thanx to Josh for attempting to help.
Then I found another one... |
Wow Jamie, awesome, congrats. That’s an upgrade? If so, what did you do with the one upgraded from? And yes Sean, thanks for the constant reminder.... I need a Cobb back too (I keep ignoring that one!).

Was glad to win this one on eBay. Pleasantly surprised when it arrived. I was thinking the MK designation was due to some sort of writing on the back but it was not. There is a very faint black 'mark' I guess up near the B in Batter but I don't even know if that's it, to be honest.
I was thinking they may have put the MK on for the Fenway stamp but others don't have it so I don't know that that's it, either. This is one of the older ones I've seen that they graded , though, so I'm wondering if it could be. They now grade them as the Fenway Breweries set so might be worth sending back in if there's really no mark present. The large diagonal line shown on his neck/chin, I should add, is on the case and not the card. |

Great Day at Chantilly -- traded a card a have long been looking to move for these three; particularly soooo psyched about the Wags Mello Mint, (although the E101 is likely worth more and Brunners aint half bad either). Please excuse the pictures, best I could do under the circumstances
|
Nice Ryan! That E105 is outstanding!
|
Awesome job Ryan. I guess it was good bye Paige and hello to 3 beautiful Wagner’s. Love that Mello-Mint

Ryan, although all 3 cards are great pickups from the Chantilly Show (a little plug for Joe D., the Show promoter), it's the E105 that really, really excites me! I enjoyed meeting you and chatting with you at the Chantilly Show (if I do enough promoting, maybe Joe D. will give me a lifetime pass to the Chantilly Show!), and I look forward to the April 28th collector get together you have arranged.
Best, Val |

Thanks all. Chuck, you guessed it. Val, great meeting in person and looking forward to catching up on the 28th. I saw that E105 at Chantilly and decided I could not leave without it, but the seller did not take credit card, or PayPal and I had a cash offer on my Paige that was a tad below what I wanted - so, we pull a five-figure, 3 way deal at Chantilly involving a 48 leaf Paige, 3 Wagners and a boat load cash - best trade of the early baseball season.
Meanwhile, the Chantilly show remains an awesome event. Great people, great cards, and free entry for net54 members is the cherry on top. And Demaryius Thomas is signing autographs tmrw! And, the REA guys were of course there - holy crap!! It’s not even fair. I have never ever ever seen so many unreal cards in one place at one time. Heck of day. Great show all around. |
WOW!!!

That`s a really cool piece Jeff, always find items with some "history" of the game the most desired. Enjoy it sir.

Very cool memorabilia/history, especially the negro league piece (very neat). Joshua, great E105- I remember that in eBay and was not surprised it was snapped up fast

I just purchased a 1938 Earhart Mars Confections card a couple days ago that I hope to receive sometimes this week. PSA has only graded eight of that card and SGC has only graded four of them. For such an iconic/famous figure, Earhart's cards are surprisingly affordable (at least other than her Heinz F277 Aviators card). That is why I love collecting non-sports. |
Quote:
https://www.psacard.com/psasetregist...shedset/141443 The 1933 Orami Heroes of the Air card looks like such a cool card, with Earhart looking at a model plane with a young girl. But PSA has only graded three of that card, and I have never seen one for sale/auction. There appears to be an error in the images, however. The 1938 Mars Confections card depicts a signed Earhart check instead of the correct card. One of the other Earhart items that shows up from time to time and is pretty cool comes from the Smithsonian. In the 1970s, the Smithsonian reskinned several of the famous planes in their possession and made small pieces of the plane's fabric available to the public. Now, it seems amazing that the Smithsonian would actually do such a thing. But some of the Earhart samples from the Lockheed Vega she used to cross the Atlantic in 1932 do show up from time to time on eBay and typically sell for a few hundred dollars. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Smithsonian...gAAOSwlBhanugS I am not an autograph guy at all, but Earhart was a prolific signer. Her autograph is not rare, just expensive. She would frequently takes covers with her on many of her famous trips, autograph them, then sell them to the public after the trip ended. At some of her speaking engagements, she would give give brief plane rides to members of the crowd or well-connected patrons. The autographed cards also show up from time to time on eBay and will list the person's name and what number the person was in line for the chance to take a brief ride with Earhart that day. https://www.skinnerinc.com/auctions/2764B/lots/24 It is has been speculated that one of the reasons Earhart left her trailing antenna behind in Miami on her ill-fated final flight was because she did not want to carry the nine-pound antenna along. She was obsessed with saving weight on the plane, yet carried hundreds of covers with her that were postmarked/autographed during her flight and were contracted to be sold for a total of $25,000 once the around the world flight was completed. Not taking the trailing antenna with her greatly reduced Earhart's ability to communicate with the Coast Guard cutter Itasca when she was unable to locate Howland island. She also did not have adequate knowledge of Morse Code, and repeatedly showed no interest in learning the skill. |

Just arrived today, from most recent Leland's. 1916 RPPC, formerly owned by the Foster estate, with hand-written note by Rube's sister. And while Foster appears on several earlier Team PCs - I even own a 1911 Chicago American Giants, (which will now become my official Pete Hill card, lol) - I believe this may be Foster's earliest INDIVIDUAL appearance on any type of "card." I might be wrong about that? Regardless, I'm extremely happy right now!!

Signed T201 Cicotte
Just picked up this awesome signed T201 of Eddie Cicotte. Couldn't believe it showed up on eBay last week. Brings my total signed T201 poses to 9 (on 8 cards, with Doyle and Meyers dual signed). I really love the look of the T201s with signatures on them.
