"Babe" Ruth signatures
Always strikes me as odd when I see he signed so many things "Babe" Ruth. As if he wanted to remind people Babe wasn't his real name. Sort of an odd affectation, as so many guys in those days had nicknames. Was "Babe" limited to a certain period? Any rhyme or reason to the ""? Are there any Ruth items out there with his real name signed?

I get your point but a lot of entertainers go by different names. Think actors like Tom cruise or Charlie sheen. Babe Ruth was the ultimate entertainer at that period and he embraced being the "celebrity" more than the man. George Ruth was the man "Babe" Ruth was the superhero.

Not questioning for a moment his nickname. . . . just curious why he felt the need to sign it in quotes. Dizzy Dean wasn't signing "Dizzy" Dean to my knowledge. And Tom Cruise doesn't sign his name Tom "Cruise".

He used the quotes up until 1927 when he became highly popular. Not that he wasn't popular pre-1927, be he typically used the quotes pre-1927, and stopped using them 1927 and thereafter. Maybe he stopped using them in 1927 simply to save time signing due to the constant demand for his autograph? Basically-he stopped using the quotes as his popularity soared.

I think that the only "George" Ruth baseball related items you will find would be contracts. The only time period I could ever see him signing anything as George in a "signing for a fan" context would have been in 1914 or possibly 1915. Back then there weren't many if any people seeking autographs of baseball players.
And I only give those dates under the slight possibility that early on he may not have been fond of being known as Babe, which is merely speculation. Basically anything baseball related would be a contract or a check that happens to be baseball related. Tom C |
