Strange T206 Southern Leaguer "brown" OLD MILL card....check-it-out

I was sorting thru a stack of T206's this past weekend, and this Frank King card caught my attention. The OLD MILL back appears to me to have a brownish tint.
It's not the usual fading of the black ink which can appear to look "brown".

If indeed this card's back lettering is actually brown, then it is a very unique T206....since this subject is not one of the 34 possible Southern League cards which
this printing error has been confirmed.

I showed this card to T206 collectors at the Philly Show this weekend. The majority of opinions ranged from a "hint of brown" to "faint brown" to "may be brown".

So, what say you ? ?

From the scan I would also call it hint of brown. As a T210 collector I have seen several T210s with that hint of brown backs.

I can tell you want graders would say... that card will never slab as brown OM. It’s black.

Ted, do you have a Brown OM you can put it against in a pic? Or maybe try a brown Hindu for comparison

MVSNYC 03-08-2018 06:55 PM

Hi Ted- Judging purely from these scans, I think it’s faded black...you’re comparing it next to a rather dark/bold black example, try to scan it next to Hindu or a true brown OM, if you have, as Ryan suggested.

For your sake, I’d love for it to be brown for ya!

Sorry Ted, it looks like a faded black to me. :(

Ted, the Old Mill southern leaguers vary quite a bit and some of the faded
ones have a brownish look to them. Your king is one of the brownish
variations.

Here it is next to a true brown Old Mill.

The white of the card has a brown tone, the printing is clearly faded black.

Great comparison. Personally, I have a hard time telling between the light blacks and the browns.

To me the true browns have a red tint, and there's no hint of that in the light black ones. If your eyes work like mine just ask yourself, "Does this brown look a little bit red?" And if it's no, as is generally the case, it isn't the brown you're looking for.

If you have to ask "Is this brown?"....then it is black.

tedzan 03-09-2018 07:54 AM

OK guys....thanks for your inputs.

At the Philly Show 6 of 8 guys that looked at this Frank King card said it appeared to have a hint of brown lettering.
Two of the 8 said it was faded black. Perhaps, the florescent lighting in the showroom made a difference.
Or, perhaps my scan isn't the best.

In any event, I guess it really ain't brown. Case closed.
