Pack of Churchman's Cigarettes - Did It Contain a Card?

Posted By: Ben
I was wondering if anyone knows whether or not this pack of Churchman's contained a card at one time? What year is the pack from? Does anyone know the value? It's pretty cool that there are still three original cigarettes with it!

Pack of Churchman's Cigarettes - Did It Contain a Card?

Posted By: leon
I will take a stab and give a semi educated guess. When I spoke to a friend (Jon C) recently about the Pirate pack I had (since traded) with a card in it he told me that English cigarettes didn't come with tax stamps. IF they didn't, and I have no reason not to believe they didn't have them, then we only need to date the pack to when cards were produced. If that is done then I would think there would be at least a possibility this housed a card. Here are some of the sets that were made and I took them from a "for sale" site, The order below is: the year, number in set and lira/dollar value. I would date this pack to around the 10's-30's..(by other slide shell packs I have seen and the general look) though I could be off on that a little bit. I would guesstimate the pack at about $35-$80 value, only by my gut feel....

Yr-#in set ----Title---value lira/dollars

1911 50 A Tour Round the World 300 480
1938 M48 Air Raid Precautions 12 19
1916 25 Army Badges of Rank 100 160
1938 50 Association Footballers 35 56
1939 50 Association Footballers [2nd series] 50 80
1906 50 Birds & Eggs 275 440
1922 25 Boxing 125 200
1938 50 Boxing Personalities 100 160
1916 50 Boy Scouts 300 480
1916 50 Boy Scouts 2nd series 300 480
1916 50 Boy Scouts 3rd series (Brown back) 300 480
1934 25 British Film Stars 40 64
1934 54/55 Can You Beat Bogey at St Andrews 180 288
1934 54/55 Can You Beat Bogey at St Andrews (Red Overprint) 200 320
1924 25 Cathedrals & Churches 43 69
1925 50 Celebrated Gateways 90 144
1926 25 Civic Insignia and Plate 43 69
1935 50 Contract Bridge 40 64
1936 50 Cricketers 150 240
1926 25 Curious Dwellings 40 64
1926 L12 Curious Dwellings 48 77
1925 25 Curious Signs 45 72
1908 38 Dogs & Fowls 250 400
1912 50 East Suffolk Churches (Black front) 80 128
1917 50 East Suffolk Churches (Sepia front) 75 120
1931 25 Eastern Proverbs 18 30
1931 L12 Eastern Proverbs 42 67
1932 25 Eastern Proverbs 2nd series 18 30
1932 L12 Eastern Proverbs 2nd series 24 38
1933 L12 Eastern Proverbs 3rd series 24 38
1934 L12 Eastern Proverbs 4th series 18 29
1931 50 Empire Railways 110 176
1928 25 Famous Cricket Colours 87 139
1927 50 Famous Golfers 625 1000
1929 25 Famous Railway Trains 62 99
1929 L12 Famous Railway Trains 60 96
1929 L12 Famous Railway Trains 2nd series 54 86
1914 50 Fish & Bait 275 440
1912 50 Fishes of the World 250 400
1924 30/50 Fishes of the World 45 72
1912 50 Flags and Funnels of Leading Steamship Liners 300 480
1909 50 Football Cub Colours 425 680
1914 50 Footballers (Brown) 1250 2000
1914 50 Footballers (Coloured) 650 1040
1935 52 Frisky 182 291
1934 50 History & development of the British Empire 70 112
1937 M48 Holidays in Britain (Views and maps) 12 20
1937 M48 Holidays in Britain (Views only) 12 20
1937 40 Howlers 8 14
1937 L16 Howlers 8 14
1938 50 In town tonight 15 24
1905 50 Interesting buildings 300 480
1928 25 Interesting door knockers 55 88
1929 25 Interesting experiments 30 48
1930 L12 Italian Art Exhibition, 1930, 1st series 12 19
1931 L12 Italian Art Exhibition, 1930, 2nd series 12 19
1939 50 Kings of speed 30 48
1931 50 Landmarks in Railway Progress 125 200
1932 L12 Landmarks in Railway Progress 51 82
1932 L12 Landmarks in Railway Progress 2nd series 54 86
1928 50 Lawn Tennis 150 240
1936 50 Legends of Britian 40 64
1936 L12 Legends of Britian 18 29
1930 25 Life in a Liner 38 61
1930 L12 Life in a Liner 36 58
1910 50 Medals 300 480
1928 50 Men of the moment in Sport 240 384
1928 L12 Men of the moment in Sport 235 376
1928 L12 Men of the moment in Sport 2nd series 235 376
1938 M48 Modern Wonders 13 21
1924 25 Musical Instruments 75 120
1930 25 Natures Architects 30 48
1927 25 Pipes of the World 65 104
1931 50 Prominent Golfers 500 800
1931 L12 Prominent Golfers 350 560
1934 50 Racing Greyhounds 130 208
1927 25 Railway Working 2nd series 55 88
1926 25 Railway Working A series 80 128
1912 50 Regimental Colours & Cap Badges 275 440
1921 50 Rivers and Broads 250 400
1922 50 Rivers and Broads of Norfolk & Suffolk 200 320
1935 50 Rugby Internationals 80 128
1913 50 Sectional Cycling Map 250 400
1915 50 Silhouttes of Warships 375 600
1927 25 Sporting Celebrities 135 216
1927 25 Sporting Trophies 55 88
1929 25 Sports & Games in Many Lands 100 160
1931 25 The houses of Parliament & their story 43 69
1922 25 The Inns of Court 60 96
1937 50 The Kings Coronation 10 16
1937 L15 The Kings Coronation 12 19
1937 M48 The Navy at Work 12 19
1936 50 The Queen Mary 65 104
1937 M48 The RAF at Work 39 62
1934 50 The Story of London 60 96
1937 50 The Story of Navigation 15 24
1937 L12 The Story of Navigation 15 24
1937 50 Treasure Trove 8 13
1929 25 Warriors of all Nations 60 96
1934 50 Well-Known Ties 39 62
1934 L12 Well-Known Ties 20 32
1935 50 Well-Known Ties 2nd series 32 51
1935 L12 Well-Known Ties 2nd series 20 32
1924 25 Wembley Exhibition 50 80
1919 50 West Suffolk Churches 65 104
1907 50 Wild Animals of the World 300 480
1939 M48 Wings over the Empire 15 24
1937 50 Wonderful Railway Travel 13 20

Pack of Churchman's Cigarettes - Did It Contain a Card?

Posted By: Jon Canfield
Leon - I think everything you said is 100% accurate but I o want to clarify one thing which was probably my mistake when we spoke. With regards to the early Pirate packs (for example, those produced between lets say 1909 and 1915), there were not tax stamps adhered to them. That being said, I am unfamiliar as to if and when Great Britain may have started placing tax stamps on packs. I have seen many Pirates from the 1920's, 30's, etc and NONE seem to have them. I have also seen countless other British brands without tax stamps. However, a tax stamp, is, after all, just proof that a produced paid whatever revenue tax the government imposed on it. The US used a fairly simple system beginning in the 1870s. Great Britain did not seem to follow suit. I would imagine, however, that at some point, Great Britain must have employed tax stamps (although I'm not sure when) or if not, had some other way of taxing tobacco.

================================== ====
For the premier online souce of information on baseball-related cigarette packs, visit http://www.baseballandtobacco.com
