The most deserving 19th Century Player not yet enshrined in the HOF

Not sure my vote would go to Tony Mullane but I love this card;

Which player from the 19th century, not already enshrined, would you put in the HOF?

barrysloate 10-11-2010 07:51 AM

SABR recently conducted this very survey and the winner was Deacon White.

Found that list. Thanx for the lead... Time for a 19th C mass induction!

Here are the 2010 candidates and their point totals:

1.Deacon White (418)
2.Bill Dahlen (339)
3.Harry Stovey (303)
4.Ross Barnes (285)
5.Tony Mullane (278)
6.Bob Caruthers (200)
7.Jack Glasscock (194)
8.Doc Adams (188)
9.George Van Haltren (145)
10.Bobby Mathews (119)

barrysloate 10-11-2010 09:00 AM

Steve- I filled in the SABR survey and my choice was Jim Creighton. Admittedly, his career was too short to technically qualify, but I think his legendary status should allow him to bypass the rules.

autograf 10-11-2010 09:14 AM

I'm biased but Browning.......Mullane & Stovey otherwise.....sadly, none will go in.....

bbcard1 10-11-2010 10:06 AM

Probably should be a completely separate hall of fame for these guys. But the visitation would be "light."

quinnsryche 10-11-2010 10:12 AM

My vote for:

"Parisian" Bob Caruthers

bh3443 10-11-2010 04:54 PM

Stovey

These are all legends but I'd pick Stovey first, Browning 2nd.... then the rest!

Brian Van Horn 10-11-2010 05:25 PM

Another vote for Browning, but "The Gladiator" nickname because of his fielding ability will always hurt his chances.

kkkkandp 10-11-2010 05:45 PM

Jim McCormick

Jim McCormick also deserves some consideration, but, as Tom says, it is highly unlikely any of the men named will get in.

paul 10-12-2010 09:45 PM

Caruthers and Van Haltren. You can make room for them by kicking out McCarthy and McPhee.

Ross Barnes and another vote for Browning. I would think that somewhere down the road, there will be a call for another special committee to revisit the 19th century guys (much like the Negro League from 2006). I believe they have done this before. Could reek havoc with us HOF collectors!

kkkkandp 10-13-2010 04:48 AM

Glasscock

Ted:

Glasscock was a very good player in his day, but he was just that - very good, making him a real stretch for HOF consideration in my opinion. His statistics were like those of Lave Cross and Tido Daly and no one is mentioning them and the Hall of Fame in the same sentence.

Kevin

P.S. Please don't tell me you saw him play so the statistics really don't tell the whole story! :D

GaryPassamonte 10-13-2010 05:19 AM

Ken- I'm with you all the way with Ross Barnes. I also think a HOF 19th century special committee would not be an impossibility.

Joe_G. 10-13-2010 05:23 AM

1) Deacon White
2) Pete Browning

tedzan 10-13-2010 06:58 AM

Hey Joe G......

I would tend to agree with you regarding Glasscock.

However, I'm hoarding his OJ and N162 cards just in case :)

Hey, T-RexTed,

You know darn well that it was Ogg and not Abner Doubleday that invented baseball. You were there! :D

Nice Mullane card, the seller is as good as they get! (shameful self-promotion!)

Personally, I feel Mullane, Browning and Stovey are the top 3 not yet in, with Creighton and Barnes being the honorable mentions.

Hoy4HOF 10-13-2010 10:59 PM

William Hoy (of course) :)

interesting view from Cap Anson-1918

From baseball reference.com=

In the January 10, 1918 issue of The Sporting News, Cap Anson picks his all-time team. Anson selects catchers Buck Ewing and King Kelly; pitchers Amos Rusie, John Clarkson, Jim McCormick; at 1B, himself; 2B Fred Pfeffer; 3B Ned Williamson; SS Ross Barnes; and outfielders Bill Lange, George Gore, Jimmy Ryan, and Hugh Duffy.

Notice that several of these players haven't made the HOF yet. I thought the OF choices were very interesting in particular.

I also thought I'd send along the link to Jimmy Ryan whose career was very good and he had a couple brushes with disaster, making this a cool read.

rhettyeakley 10-14-2010 11:28 PM

Brian, you are probably already aware of this but a photo of Jimmy Ryan was accidently included in a set produced in 1909-1911, the E254 Colgan's Chips. The card was meant to depict Jack Ryan for St. Paul but somehow they mistakenly used a 1903 photo of Jimmy Ryan. This is the same photo that was used on Ryan's final card, his E107 Breisch-Williams...

The E107 is not my card.

__________________________________________________ _______________

It looks like every single one of the ones not in the HOF were teammates of Anson's. His list reminds me of the efforts of Frankie Frisch that allowed a few of his ex-teammates to sneak into the HOF.

familytoad 10-16-2010 12:06 PM

Ryan -Anson- Frisch - Cobb/Wagner

Thanks Rhett...Actually I didn't know that about Colgan's...I only have a few.

Stories like Jimmy Ryan's are why I collect cards in the first place!

Howard...I'm glad that Anson didn't lead a committee to induct HOF players based on teammate status. The comments going around regarding Bill James "Politics of Glory" really should have focused more on the Frisch era when many of the debatable HOFers obtained membership. That might have been one of the big points that Frank was making when he advised others to read the book.:) Of course, collectors are wise to that era, and some of the 1930's HOF players demand only small premiums over Non-HOFers in their contemporary sets.

When I said the Anson picks were "interesting", I should have also included that by 1918 a few fellows named Cobb, Lajoie and Wagner had pretty good careers...but Ol' Cap apparently wasn't "interested"!

I should also add...if George Gore gets in I have a chance to have the worst conditioned HOF Old Judge of all-time!

howard38 10-16-2010 01:36 PM

lol, goodluck w/the Gore, Brian!

I think Anson was suffering from what Bill James would call "old fogeyism".

Howard

Misunderestimated 10-17-2010 07:35 PM

Anson's list -- as implied above -- over-represents his own players. If he had been in Frankie Frisch's position then they would all be in the HOF.....

Gore and company are as good as Highpockets Kelley, Travis Jackson and Freddie Lindstrom.....
