Oh no! Rookie Cards again?

Posted By: Gilbert Maines
. Another thing that the MLBPA has done is made some new regulations on what makes a rookie card a true rookie card. As of 2006 "first year" baseball cards of players will not count as real rookie cards. A lot of these "first year" cards are found in products such as Bowman, Bowman Chrome, and Bowman Sterling. These "first year" cards are of players that are still down in the minor leagues and have not played an official major league game in their life. Now your probably sitting there thinking what does count as a rookie card? Well, starting this year a card will be called a rookie card if it is the first time the player has been placed on the 40 man roster for the major league team. For the card to be called a rookie the player must be up with the team and not down in the minors. The MLBPA has made identifying these new rookie cards very easy. You know you have a rookie card if it has the new rookie card logo on the front of the card . The logo is very simply to find and just says "Rookie Card". Now, collectors may still classify "first year" cards as a players official rookie card but if you look in price guides or product checklists "first year" cards will not be classified as true rookie cards.
