1869 National Chronicle-woodcut interest
4 Attachment(s)
I recently picked up a June 5, 1869 issue of the National Chronicle, primarily because it contains the first national notice of the Cincinnati Red Stockings, complete with scouting report. This predates the Harper’s issue by a month is meant to coincide with their arrival in the northeast. It was the official publication of the National Association, and is full of baseball content, including articles, box scores, ads and news. Among the notices were 2 I thought would interest woodcut collectors. One about Jim Creighton, the other a supplement of all the portraits issued.. if anyone has anything they want me to look for in the issue, let me know. I have attached a few representative photos.

Hi Bruce,
That's a great find...congrats! That's a tough publication and even tougher with front page portraits of the ball players. It's fantastic to see reference to the different player depictions. I always assumed that the listings would be placed in an appendix of some sort but that would be more likely in a bound volume. George |
Thanks George,
Sending details to you. |
That's pretty amazing

Doug, I was hoping you had the supplement mentioned so I could see it. The Base Ball players were mainly from Lowell and Harvard. Of course Mort Rogers later made the scorecard/ with photos.
