I love watching the progress of collectors pursing a signed set

steve_a 01-04-2016 06:46 PM

My Aurelio Lopez arrived today, 9 cards left.

Topps206 01-09-2016 04:10 PM

I'm at 208. Gary Lucas, Denis Menke (Astros Leaders) and Jose Guzman have all come back. I recently was given a gift of Lou Piniella and Dwight Lowry.

Topps206 01-19-2016 05:51 PM

Recent additions are Rick Sutcliffe, Bill Madlock, Steve Trout and Ken Phelps.

Topps206 01-22-2016 03:36 PM

I'm up to 215. I got Tommy John back from a signing, plus Andre Thornton and Dave Kingman were returns today.

Topps206 01-23-2016 03:23 PM

I received a Roy Smalley return today. So now it's 216.

Topps206 01-28-2016 09:55 AM

It's 217 with a private signing mail order return from Von Hayes.

Wanted

Hi .....if anyone has any duplicate autos from the 1987 topps set, please PM me. I am interested in putting a set together. Unfortunately I do not have any duplicates myself yet

Andy

Topps206 01-30-2016 05:09 PM

218 from Storm Davis today.

Topps206 02-01-2016 12:59 PM

Good start to February. Benny Distefano and Bryan Clutterbuck make it 220.

Topps206 02-04-2016 12:07 PM

I had a failure from Lasorda today. I'm disappointed.

Topps206 02-05-2016 11:49 AM

Well, I can at least enjoy today's successes as opposed to yesterday's failures. Neil Allen and Rich Yett came in. It's 222 now.

dgo71 02-05-2016 03:00 PM

Am I the only one who would love to see scans of these? :D :D

Are you gentlemen saying you'd like me to post pictures of my returns?

Republicaninmass 02-06-2016 05:11 AM

Yes pwease

Weird. They can upload on Blowout. I can just link you the pictures from there.

Topps206 02-08-2016 11:57 AM

I got a personalized from Paul Zuvella today and I got Steve Balboni on Saturday, though that was bent.

Topps206 02-11-2016 09:24 PM

Wow. So I sent in a mail order for the St. Louis Show this weekend for a couple of players and Jorge Orta won't be attending. It looks like he has cancelled appearances before. Something has happened with his new agent and cut off contact, now he might've left the country.

I don't know the situation, but I'm disappointed. Anybody else have trouble with Orta before?

Topps206 02-12-2016 09:58 AM

Got Sandberg and Rick Anderson today.

sbfinley 02-12-2016 02:48 PM

Great returns thus far. I'm concentrating on the 83' set and sent out about 100 in Nov/Dec. I need to get back on it. I saw you recieved a return from Balboni, I got a RTS that he moved in Dec. Guess it was a bad address.

Topps206 02-12-2016 10:20 PM

Hey thanks. Let me PM you his address.

Topps206 02-14-2016 01:13 PM

I'm at 229 with Rick Schu and Dave Schmidt.

Topps206 02-16-2016 03:25 PM

I got a return from Carl Willis and bought a signed Ken Howell card for $2.00. So now it's 231.

Topps206 02-16-2016 10:55 PM

I see Dennis McKinnon is doing a signing this month and his 1986 Topps card, which he is notorious for not signing, is available for signature at $35.00, though higher than a ticket for other items.

Maybe there's hope for us who want Ricky Wright after all.

Topps206 02-19-2016 11:42 AM

I was able to get Rich Bordi on his base card last year and got him a second time today, this time for the Orioles Leaders card.

Topps206 02-20-2016 12:06 PM

I got Billy Hatcher today c/o the Reds Spring Training.

mantleman 02-22-2016 05:48 AM

Ricky Wright

Has anyone seen the 1987 Topps Ricky Wright card just listed on Ebay? Zero feedback

http://www.ebay.com/itm/201527837483...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Topps206 02-22-2016 11:24 AM

While anything's possible, I'm going to guess it's a fake. Winning bidder better send to JSA.

Topps206 02-22-2016 12:28 PM

I'm debating with others over the Wright. Meanwhile, Sid Bream signed his base card as well as the Pirates Leaders for me, putting me at 235.

MacDice 02-22-2016 04:47 PM

I am guessing that if that Wright was real the bidding would be greater.

It looks a lot like a PSA slab I saw.

Topps206 02-23-2016 08:48 AM

The listing is gone. It must be a fake.

Topps206 02-23-2016 01:57 PM

More for the set today.

Terry Kennedy signed his base card and Padres Leaders. Plus I got Randy Niemann on his base card.

Topps206 02-23-2016 01:57 PM

Double post.

Topps206 02-25-2016 11:20 AM

Make it 239. John Tudor came in today.

Topps206 02-26-2016 11:52 AM

Wow. Seven returns today. Six are from the 1987 set.

John Stefero (Also signed a checklist)
Floyd Rayford
Luis Salazar
Bob Horner (From a show in St. Louis)
Sammy Stewart (From a show in New York)
Ricky Horton (X2)

Now I'm at 245/792.

Nice progress on your set. I have been considering doing the 1989 Topps set. I have a case of wax boxes and may open enough to make a set or two. I want to send some out plus I already have several. Are there very many difficult to get guys in 89 Topps?

Also would it be wise to send some from like 89 Donruss or Fleer since the checklists may be similar and some guys will sign multiples. I have not worked on any larger sets. I have been working on a 1976 Wonder Bread Football set and I need just a few more signatures to finish it up.

Let me research and I'll be happy to share. Go ahead and send multiples, but be careful not only who signs but how much. Some are one per. Others do multiples. I'll come up with a list for you.

There are quite a few deceased and HOF players but most are relatively inexpensive. The toughest/most expensive HOFer in the set would probably be Randy Johnson, unless you also decide to work on the Traded set which includes Ken Griffey Jr. The tougher guys are going to be the commons that disappeared after their careers, especially those players from foreign countries like the Dominican, Mexico, etc.

Here's a quick run down of the guys that might be challenging and/or costly to acquire:

HOFers-
Randy Johnson
Hank Aaron TBTC (he's very pricey these days)
Gary Carter (has 3 cards in the set (base, All-Star, highlights), and he did not sign cards made after 1984 for free, so anyone who obtained these cards probably did so for their own private collection, which limits the amount that would be available to the public now.)
Kirby Puckett (probably not hard to find per se but may be more expensive than you'd first think since his death was sudden and unexpected)

Deceased players-
Tim Crews
Pascual Perez
Frank Williams
Bo Diaz (passed in Venezuela in 1990, would be very hard to find)
Carmen Castillo (he hated signing)

Toughies-
Fred Manrique
Hipolito Pena
Jim Traber
Mel Hall
Andy Allanson
Johnny Paredes
Mike Diaz
German Jimenez
Jose Cecena
Stan Jefferson
Carlos Quintana
Candy Sierra
German Gonzalez
Wil Tejada
Barry Bonds (even though he's involved in the game again, he's super tough)

Hope that helps.

I really appreciate the reply. I may get started on it and see just how far I can get.

Topps206 02-29-2016 12:30 PM

Claudell Washington is not tough to get. He signs for $10.00 via PastPros.

I got Glenn Hubbard on my Braves Leaders today and special thanks to someone who got Bert Blyleven and Tim Laudner for me at TwinsFest, along with Neil Allen and Roy Smalley again.

248/792.

True. I forgot about those guys.

Topps206 03-02-2016 12:27 PM

It's now 249 with a Roger Mason return.

Topps206 03-03-2016 12:58 PM

I got Mark Salas back c/o White Sox Spring Training and also Kurt Stillwell for 251.

Both would be good for the person who's collecting the 1989 set.
