Generally, it is known that Branch Rickey was a pioneer in the use of the farm system as we know it. Did the Southern League have any formal ties with major league teams similiar to what Branch Rickey created?

It would be unlikely that I would pick any minor leaguers out of the group.<br /><br />I know that Lipsett's Encyclopedia is considered a good reference, but it's been out of print for a long time and I do not have one on my shelf.<br /><br />If I got seriously into any set I normally refer to my Standard Catalog.<br /><br />Peter C.

Posted By: <b>dennis</b><p>to answer petes ?. no minor league team had any connection with a major league team till branch rickey innovated the system w/stl cards. they operated independently and sold better players to the majors.(to the highest bidder) at first it was thought that rickeys "farm" system would ruin the minor leagues but as we now know it helped them survive. soon after rickey innovated the farm system all the major league teams followed suit.

And he moved players from the Whites to the Browns during the 1880s. Several of these Whites players appear in the Old Judge set.
