Powerball at 700 Million...what would you buy?

If you were to buy the winning ticket, with 700 million dollars...what's the first Sports card you'd buy?? And just for fun let's exclude the T206 Wagner cause I'm sure most everyone would say that.

I know no one would guess mine would be a Cracker Jack card(hence my name)
But I would buy a Christy Mathewson 1914. A close second would be Walter Johnsons 1907 Weiser Postcard. Always loved that image.

T206Collector 08-23-2017 07:17 PM

All of them. Every single one.

But seriously, I'd never get outbid on a signed pre-war card again.

You can have mine for only half that powerball winnings. :DAttachment 285143

VintageBen 08-23-2017 07:21 PM

I would first purchase Orlando Rodriguez's collection!!!! :D:D:D

Secondly, I would purchase Ken Kendrick's collection.

Sean 08-23-2017 07:22 PM

And I would buy a Doyle Nat'l variation.

Or maybe that 8 figure item that Goldin is talking about.

Ferrari 250 gto red😀😀

wondo 08-23-2017 07:38 PM

Collecting would suck...................

....at least for 99% of us. Having unlimited funds just lets you buy whatever, whenever. I'd grab a Kaline PSA 9 collection.

Fballguy 08-23-2017 07:43 PM

Not sure what I'd buy but I'd figure it out in an overwater bungalow in Bora Bora while wearing a speedo and sipping an alcoholic drink with a paper umbrella in it.

Snapolit1 08-23-2017 07:45 PM

I'd buy Lichtman's collection.

KMayUSA6060 08-23-2017 07:53 PM

1. I would find a lawyer.

2. I would hire a fantastic finance person to aid my investments and portfolio.

3. New housing would be in order. Probably 2 - one beach, one with acreage.

4. New cars for myself and my fiancee. She likes SUVs and I'd get a nice truck with a solid lift and good stance.

5. Now we get into the cards. I would finish my Hall of Fame collection first, then I would buy a complete T206 set, complete '33 Goudey set, and buy all Indians/Thome cards.

First thing I thought of as well. :)

Aquarian Sports Cards 08-23-2017 08:06 PM

not sure, but I've started a bunch of sets that I started raw with the intent of grading, have gotten as far as halfway done but never finished. The challenge of putting together a high grade raw set for grading with the goal of assembling a top tier registry set would at least make it interesting. With that much money a challenge would be the most difficult thing to come by.

oldjudge 08-23-2017 08:14 PM

If I had enough, I'd buy the big lot coming up in Goldin Auctions

Mdmtx 08-23-2017 08:14 PM

First stop would be to meet Jay Miller in person and buy some n cards. Then to Adam Warshaws for some boxing. Then the hunt would be on to complete n162, n172, n173, n174 n184, n268, n269, n300 and n566. Maybe even buy some "new" stuff like t3 and t9.

Oh... and never...ever...ever work again.

Brian Van Horn 08-23-2017 08:31 PM

1. Tax attorney
2. Investments
3. Live off interest
4. From the interest, buy cards and plow a lot of the remaining interest back into investments.

Rich Falvo 08-23-2017 08:34 PM

I'd try to track down the T206 Broad Leafs, Carolina Brights, and Drums for my Providence set.

clydepepper 08-23-2017 08:47 PM

Just for giggles and grins, I would buy up ALL of the 1986 Topps cards, then burn all but a single complete set.

Just think of all the offers I would get!

:D

.

edjs 08-23-2017 09:02 PM

I would hoard and manipulate the market.:D

1952boyntoncollector 08-23-2017 09:05 PM

I would take all the money and spend it on every one of deans listings on ebay at list price....200 million or so should get me about 1/2 of them at least..

tjb1952tjb 08-23-2017 10:27 PM

Remember..........."only" about $450 million after taxes.:D

Rich Klein 08-24-2017 02:23 AM

I'd pay Leon the $650K he wants for this board.

(That is just a joke BTW)

I was thinking about this too. It would be like collecting 87-90 Topps right now where price is not a deterrent.

The ratios would be the same as that for all of the fun stuff we collect. The idea of unlimited want lists/limited resources is what makes the chase so much fun.

tschock 08-24-2017 06:33 AM

I know the OP excluded the Wagner, but....

1 ) Buy THE Wagner
2 ) Crack it out
3 ) Start up a company that authenticated cards but did not grade them
4 ) Have the Wagner slabbed as authentic (hey, we know the history anyway)
5 ) Travel and advertise buying cards, looking for that next great big find. Because for me it's as much the thrill of the hunt as anything.

bnorth 08-24-2017 06:36 AM

I would buy a minor league team and be worse than Al Davis was with the Raiders. I would also open a baseball card museum displaying the nicest set of T210s money could buy.

Exhibitman 08-24-2017 12:44 PM

The National: goodbye AC and Cleveland, hello Las Vegas!

A politician.

Every GDMF card I ever wanted and a home with a hellacious man-cave to enjoy them from.

I'd give 10 mil to my daughter's public high school so they don't have to raise money all the time to fund their programs. The next 10 after that goes to my favorite public radio station on condition that they never, ever do fund drives during my favorite shows, except that the drive time host I like gets 15 minutes to bitch about how corrupt and rotten station management is, because he does that all the time and it cracks me up.

I'd have pastrami from Katz's Deli flown in for lunch every Saturday. That would make my father very happy.

I'd hire Van Halen to play my birthday party.

Ringside seats for every major fight in Vegas.

Some cargo shorts.

Maybe something for the wife?

This is the best idea I've read so far....next to mine. I wonder if they ship to Bora Bora?

Weird part of the Powerball winner this morning - they announced the winning ticket was sold in Watertown, MA, at a store a block from where my kids go to daycare. The place was abuzz this morning when I went by - media trucks lined up and down the street.

Then a few hours later, the lottery realized they F'd up and the winning ticket was actually sold 90 miles away. Hope the first store owner wasn't lined up to get a giant bonus for selling the winner, then had it taken away, Steve Harvey style!

nat 08-24-2017 02:00 PM

My first thought was "...something ocean-going."

But then there's this.

The woman who won seems not to have taken the advice.

Also, there is a $50,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

Mark Cuban says always take the annuity, hire a tax lawyer, say no to everyone (because no one needs a million dollars for anything and you already know what the people in your life truly need), don't make any investments, put all the money in the bank.

Seems like sound advice to me. That said, I'd buy every E90-1 Tris Speaker card I could find.

With $700 mill, BUY that overwater bungalow in Bora Bora! Except it is way too humid for cards over there...

ElCabron 08-24-2017 05:12 PM

I'd use my winnings to pay off a fraction of the shipping costs on the lots I won in Christie's.

Could probably buy every card I ever wanted and still have 95% of it left

Tabe 08-24-2017 05:54 PM

I didn't win but if I had...

Besides the house for myself, my mom, and my wife's mom, a couple cars, and gifts to all the family, I'd buy the following sports-related items:

1) First and foremost, Mike Eruzione's 1980 Olympic jersey and gold medal. These sold not too long ago at auction. I find the guy(s) who bought them and give them a tremendous return on their short investment.

2) The Spokane Indians. My local minor league team. Buy them and give the people I've sat next to for the last decade free season tickets and concessions for life.

3) A T-3 Ty Cobb. The best sports card of all-time, IMHO.

And then I'd spend so much time traveling from one beach to another that I'd never see any of these three purchases :)

I saw a factory Cracker Jack set in an auction a few years ago, no caramel marks, perfect, I want that !
