SCD Question for Mr. Lemke or other experts...
 

Posted By: <b>HalleyGator&nbsp; </b><p>In my 2002 SCD Big Book, there is a listing for the "1916" Globe Clothing Store set (designated as H801-9). The book describes the set as having mirrored the 1916 Sporting News set, and in the "favorite cards" thread I saw Vorthian's PSA 6 Babe Ruth Globe card labeled as a 1916 by PSA.<BR><BR>In the SCD Big Book, the picture that they show of a Globe card is of #192 ART WILSON.<BR><BR>BUT ... this would actually mirror the 1915 set, NOT the 1916 set, since ART WILSON was #192 in the 1915 M101-5 set and #191 in the 1916 M101-4 set.<BR><BR>This is an important distinction to someone like me who is very concerned about collecting the earliest possible card of certain players ... so can someone please confirm for me whether the Globe cards were made in 1915 or 1916?? <BR><BR>And what about the other such cards with different backs (Famous & Barrs, etc.)??? 1915 or 1916???<BR><BR>

Posted By: <b>HalleyGator</b><p>I checked the PSA Pop report, and all the Globe cards they have graded DO mirror the numbers from the 1916 Sporting News set and NOT the 1915 set.<BR><BR>Block & Kuhl is also from 1916 because PSA has graded one card (#131 Hy Myers), and Hy Myers was #131 in the 1916 Sporting News set, NOT in the 1915 set.<BR><BR>I guess I should stop trying to play detective ... or they should use the correct pictures.<BR><BR>

Posted By: <b>Andy Baran</b><p>Hal,<BR><BR>The Globe set is definitely from 1916. I have seen several Globe Ty Cobb cards. Cobb was not in the 1915 set. I have also seen a Globe George Sisler #164. Sisler is #166 in the 1915 set (I am looking for this card, incase anyone wants to sell me one <img src="/images/happy.gif" height=14 width=14> )<BR><BR>Famous & Barr is a more complicated. These cards were produced in both 1915 and 1916. I own a 1915 Famous & Barr #57 Hap Felsch (Hap is #56 in 1916). I have also seen a 1916 Famous & Barr #10 Dave Bancroft (Bancroft was #9 in 1915). Lew Lipset also lists Famous & Barr as both 1915 and 1916 in all of his Old Judge price guides.

There may be a similar inconsistency among the other realted issues. Anybody who'd like to see their card pictured in the 2003 book can send me a front and back scan of any of these issues; first-come, first-served. Thanks for bringing this to my attention!

I really thought I had made a great discovery until I did more research.<BR><BR>Anyway, if you just use ANY photo from the front of ANY 1916 Sporting News Card then you will be OK. <BR><BR>Looks like Poor Old #192 Art Wilson will be out of a job! <img src="/images/happy.gif" height=14 width=14>
