RMY winnings

OK. So who stayed up until the end of RMY?
Don't worry. It's OK to admit it. You're among fellow addicts, here.
Congrats to rhys on a spectacular auction with many incredible photos.
So who won what?
I won 3 photos.

1927 World Series action with lou at first. Also happens to be on my birthday.

1924 Fielding image.
http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...ictureid=16675

1934 Lou and the NY Rangers including hockey HOFers Lester Patrick, Bun Cook, and Bill Cook.
I believe the slug is incorrect. It states that Lou is presenting rings to the Rangers for playing their 400th game since entering the league. Why would you give rings to a team for playing a number of regular games? Doesn't make sense to me.
What I think is going on is this. He is presenting a ring just to Murray Murdoch. Murdoch was known as the Iron Man of Hockey at the time. From the beginning of his career, in 1926, he played 508 consecutive games. He is still number 19 on the all time hockey consecutive games played list. So, he got a ring for game 400, not the entire ranger team. IMO, It would make sense that the Iron Man of Baseball would present a consecutive games played award to the Iron Man of Hockey.

Although my days of staying up for any auction have long since passed, I did win 3 items when my bids held.

Is the second photo Hafey, without glasses?

Runscott 11-16-2014 09:28 AM

I checked this morning and found I had set a new auction record:

I was underbidder on 35 items - that's direct underbidder. Rhys must love me.

But I did manage to win 15 great photos and some were spectacular. This was probably Rhys' greatest assortment of photos ever.

Here are my favorites that I was underbidder on. I think either of these could have gone for $1,000 or more and still been a deal. I ran out of bidding money, or they would have:

Here are a few I won just because I liked the image composition:

I think these two need to be framed together:

I won 2 non sports images... Though I had money to spend.. I missed out bcuz I didn't know the auction was ending. I'm so pissed at myself!!! Now I'm stuck with a few grand in my hand. I was looking at least 20 photos to buy :(

Damn it!!

Lordstan 11-16-2014 10:45 AM

Scott,
Wow. 35 direct underbids! That has to be some sort of record.
I wish I had more money as well. I would've gone after another 4 or 5 Gehrig photos that I thought sold very reasonably.

That is a great Hooper.

Albert,
You're not alone. It happens to all of us.
I did the same thing with the Legendary auction in September. So many photos sold for under value that I am still kicking myself.

It certainly is for me. I sort of wish I had gone higher on the Weaver and Speaker/Hornsby. Several of the Gehrigs were very inexpensive until late, but I knew I was dreaming - especially the 1939 portrait. Another beauty that I would have gone much higher on if it had been larger format, was the Lajoie - that had to be the best photo of him I've ever seen. I also liked the Cobb, but once any print goes above $1,000, unless it's mounted, I quit looking at it.

Also, the Pepper Martin photo is Kreindler-worthy - what a well-composed picture.

I was VERY excited to win these two beauties:

Mark- thanks man! This is a tough one.. Photos were going for a fractions of their value. I was going for most of the Gehrig's, boxing and Grange photos. I was on the way home to bid, I got home fired up the pc "Closed for bidding!"
F*~•K!!!

I guess I gotta look at legendary :( I'm no longer a fan of since they screwed so many ppl over. Sorry for the rant.

Happily, I picked up a 1924 world series game scene.
I now have a world series game scene from every year 1926-1949;
1920,1924; 1915 and 1917--all framed(except '24 just won) and all type 1.
great fun.
great acquisitions, fellas.

all the best,
barry

Similar to Albert, I forgot about the ending time and started my "thorough browsing" with about 30 minutes to go for initial bidding. Needless to say, I didn't make it through everything. In spite of my procrastination, I managed to pick up a couple from my spot in the cheap seats:

Germany Schaefer

Rogers Hornsby in civvies by Louis Van Oeyen
http://www.rmyauctions.com/ItemImage...7254a_med.jpeg

If anyone picked up lot 332 (Nick Altrock & Al Schacht posing for photographers at 1925 World Series), I would love to get a hi-res scan of that one.

TUM301 11-16-2014 02:16 PM

Got knocked out of the Black Sox items but did manage to get one item, Lot # 40. The newspaper shot of Ruth`s new wife and the insert of him from what looks like 1920. The insert of Ruth looks exactly like the image used on the Ruth candy wrapper, the Babe and that million dollar smile. Will looked great framed in the hobby room. Great auction. Also, that Lajoie shot is UNREAL congrats Brian.

Nobody's fault but my own. I'd like to say I've learned my lesson to browse/bid earlier in the auction cycle so I'm assured the opportunity for after-hours bidding, but I'm sure this won't be the last time I shut myself out through procrastination. :o

I almost had a anxiety attack when I saw, "auction closed." Thanks to Rhys for putting up a great auction. I'm looking forward to the next one.

If anyone won any Gehrig's Ruth's etc and want to make some money let me know, thanks.

I only won one, but it's kinda cool... A "Where's Waldo" of sorts, but with Babe Ruth as the subject.

This image really conveys his immense popularity, as the "living legend" arrives for Spring Training...

The Weaver in uniform is one of the coolest pics I've ever seen.

Runscott 11-16-2014 08:15 PM

Brendan, it was a bad night not to have extra cash. I would have loved to have had $3K to throw at the Weaver, Speaker/Hornsby and Lajoie. Might have had enough leftover for a Gehrig.

Great Sisler image, Derek!

Derek, that Hoyt was my favorite photo in the entire auction. That is a fantastic pick up and fits wonderfully in your collection... Bravo!

I like the Evar Swanson photo. He was the Galesburg, Il postmaster when I went to work there in 1971. He came around and talked to me for about half an hour and I didn't know he played baseball until someone told me. Evar is the one that got me interested in early baseball.

h2oya311 11-17-2014 04:24 AM

Thanks Brian and Mike! I'm pretty stoked about those pick-ups!

Scott - you have a great eye for portrait-style photos! Congrats on all the great pick-ups.

jefferyepayne 11-17-2014 05:56 AM

There were a LOT of great football photos in this auction as well. I picked up a bunch. Here are some of my favorites:

Jim Thorpe and teammates at Carlisle

Cal Hubbard, member of BOTH the Pro Football and Baseball HOFs

Vince Lombardi as a player at Fordham (#40)

And for who prefer baseball:

Thanks Derek - there were so many great portrait in this auction, that it was hard not to get a few. I plan to mat and frame a few and re-decorate the man-cave.

I think that Sisler card was a hidden gem in the auction - great pick-up.

Jeff - beautiful Yale cabinet. I thought I might sneak away with that one and the 1860's cdv, but no such luck. Glad it went to a good home.

GKreindler 11-17-2014 01:30 PM

Derek,

The Sisler and Hoyt are both KILLER. I especially love the latter - I can't believe how young he is there. Schoolboy, indeed.

Thanks, Scott, will do. I wish I could've talked with him for a couple of hours about baseball and Babe Ruth.
My dad said him and Jimmie Foxx would talk a lot when Foxx had a restaurant back in the early sixties here in Galesburg.
