Another MLB HOF Trivia Question

By my count the BBWAA has elected 123 players to the MLB HOF through the traditional 75% minimum voting requirement (plus 3 runoff electees).

Of these 123 players only 5 were deceased at the time the BBWAA election results were announced.
Note: Roberto Clemente was elected in a Special Election.

Can you name them?

Only one I can come up with Christy Mathewson

Santo?

He was voted in by one of the veterans' committees, not the BBWAA.

Clarkson, Joss.... nope - those are probably VC picks.

Lou Gehrig and Addie Joss?

darwinbulldog 01-31-2018 12:55 PM

Mathewson, Gehrig, Waddell...?

I know Gehrig was alive for his because he was voted in pretty much right after he retired.

We could very well be wrong, but you may have missed one...

I cheated and looked, and yeah, I see five too. Two of them were very close, dying in January of the year they were elected, but as far as I can see they both died before their election was announced. I could be wrong about that.

It's a very tricky question, because only one of them has been mentioned here so far, and the others aren't at all obvious. Gehrig and Clemente were elected in special elections, and Gehrig was alive for his in any case.

One named so far

Mathewson is one correct answer. I only came up with 4 but there very well could be a fifth. I’ll go back and look again.

BleedinBlue 01-31-2018 02:09 PM

5 is correct

I missed 1. 5 is the correct answer. I’ll edit the original post.

Mathewson has been named. 4 remain.

Mathewson and Keeler died before the first HOF election. I believe Herb Pennock was another. I think he was elected because he suddenly passed away.

That’s 3 of the 5. Mathewson, Keeler and Pennock.

Two remain.

Anson?

BleedinBlue 01-31-2018 05:45 PM

Still only 3 out of 5. 2 remain.

Peter_Spaeth 01-31-2018 05:55 PM

I seem to recall Harry Heilmann died young but don't know if the writers voted him in or not.

That’s 4 out of 5.

One remaining. The one I missed the first time.
