Glue removal
Came across this lot...4 glue spots on every one of the 70 cards in the lot...is this worth buying for $280? I've never tried glue removal...and most threads I see on it deal with pre-war...not sure if it is the same process for 56/57s or if the thicker cardboard changes the game...

You need to talk to Dick Towle, at Gone With The Stain. He specializes in this sort of thing, and will need to see pictures to give you a reasonable response, as well as details about the damage to the cards. Google search him, or you may find him in Archives or the people search for Net54. Good Luck!!!!

You can soak a 1956 Topps. I believe the paper will come off, but there's a chance the glue will remain. Depends if the glue is water soluble.

I'd probably buy them at $280. Try and experiment with a few of the commons. If it is the old paste kids used to mix up with flour and water, they should soak right off. If they don't, it's still a good buy and learn to love them.

I agree the paper will come off ... but the glue spots are unlikely to. Elmer's glue from the 1950s doesn't go anywhere!

It's Dick Towle, Gone with the Stain. Not Dick Towel...... Spelling makes all the difference! My favorite cereal as a kid was Mr. Wonderful's Surprise. It was a great cereal, and I got to put a scoop of ice cream in my cereal everyday at breakfast, before school. Mom sent me off to school hopped up all day on sugar. The early 70's were great, you could be a kid, and the cereal was sugar packed. You can still find small blogs on this cereal, and images of the box. Just be sure to include the word " cereal " in the search, or you will find out what Mr Wonders Surprise is. |
Ha, no I saw the spelling difference, but that was (obviously) the firs thing I thought of since I have the humor of a 15 year old at times despite being almost 40.
I went & bought 'em tonight...soaked one of the commons, the glue sort of came off...I let two of the spots sit alone, and two of the spots I agitated with a Q-tip...the agitated ones came off...don't think I took any paper with it...the ones I left alone didn't seem to have any affect. It soaked for about 2-3 minutes... It is drying between paper towels between 2 wooden boards at the moment, will check it here in a half hour or so |
Let us know how they turn out and post some pics!

I would leave them for longer than 2-3 minutes. More like the 30 minutes range. That might free up some of that glue on it's own without agitating. It won't hurt the card any more. JMO from a long-avowed soaker...................

How did the cards turn out? I also saw this lot available but was hesitant because of the glue issues.
