Topps206/T206

I went to a local card show yesterday and one of the dealers had a few of the Topps206 with real t206 cards inside. I have never had one of these but asked to look. One of the cards had Geyer with an American Beauty 460 back. I bought the card because the price was right. Has anyone found these cards with other more difficult backs?
Thanks,
Mike

I've found a Geyer with a Sovereign 460 back that graded a 4 which was encapsulated. I really like the Topps encapsulated cards!

Joshwesley 08-16-2015 06:55 PM

Do what?

I'm a newbie and never heard of these?
Anyone have a pic... That's crazy..

Sounds awesome

Was it still in the Topps buy back frame or was it released before being graded?

In that particular Topps "T206" product, Topps would purchase T206 cards from the marketplace and insert them in their Topps boxes.

I've always had a question about those cards. Can you take them out of the card and have them graded separately as a T206????

Thanks Jeff.
Yes the card could easily be removed, but the plastic Topps case is secure. I think I'll leave it in that for now. I don't know how PSA or SGC would grade these if submitted still in the Topps plastic tomb????

Yes, they are genuine T206s just framed & encapsulated by Topps.

I've bought a few over the years and had them grade well. The Becker below was a buyback.

As far as backs, I found a Karger with a Piedmont 350 once. :)

It is also rumored that many of these buyback cards are trimmed (or weren't checked well) prior to being bought and may not grade anything higher than Authentic. Caveat emptor.

The other question is would any TPG's grade the T206 and leave it in the Topps holder? Anyone try that one? I had a couple bat cards from the Topps 206 set graded and SGC removed them.

Jeff....

great pick up!!! I love ab 460's:)

t206blogcom 08-17-2015 10:09 AM

When I was putting together my T206 set, I bought up a bunch of these and cut out the T206 from the new Topps frame. I never found one to be trimmed.

If I remember correctly Kit Young was one of the main buyers of these cards on Topps behalf.

No, they will not accept them in the Topps holder. You must remove from the Topps holder before sending for a grade. I have successfully had several graded...a couple of them came back as 4s or 5s. Those turned out to be great values.

I absolutely love the concept and wish Topps would keep doing this with more and more vintage sets. (I know they did T205s also but seems like they haven't done it consistently in a while).

Buy-backs do continue to sell for a slight premium over similar raw cards. My only concern is that it is quite easy to open and remove a T206 from the Topps holder and then reseal it with a different card inside. I did an experiment after the last time I removed one for grading. The easiest way to cut them out is just to peel the two sides apart. They come apart easily if done with a minor amount of care. Then, one could stick a different T206 inside and reseal with glue. Leave it under a heavy book for a few days to ensure it is flat and it is relatively difficult to tell that it was resealed. Certainly in an online auction it would appear perfectly authentic.

I say this only because since doing the experiment I have stopped buying the Topps buy-backs. Still, I love the concept and would buy modern packs more often just for the thrill of pulling one.

WOWWWWWWWW it graded that high. I thought all the Tops cards were low grade.

I have to be on the look out for some of these now that I know you can remove them.

Orioles1954 08-17-2015 12:07 PM

I got a case of 2002 Topps 206 when they first came out and pulled three T205 & T206 cards. From my understanding, they were all purchased by Topps from Kit Young. I think a total of around 4,000 were inserted into packs. I have seen a couple of Hall of Famers including Mathewson in these buyback holders.

Seriously doubt the legitimacy as a Topps206. Generally the cards I have seen are VG-VG/EX, I have "cracked" a lot of these and submitted them and never seen a real one even approaching this much damage.

+1 to what Scott posted.

The only thing that I can add is that I've never seen a Topps T206 Buyback with that level of back advertisement rarity.

I see no reason Topps would have done this. Would have been a more expensive card for them to obtain and most people who bought this product weren’t looking for / don’t appreciate difficult backs. And while I sure like John McGraw T206 rare backs, he is not as big of a name of HOFer as many others that could have been included.
But I sure could be wrong.

Agree. I am not sure a lot of that audience even knows what a rare back is. Maybe Larry is at it again but this time with some reverse psychology or something.

I can vouch for a Mathewson Portrait. When the set first released Marco of Kirkland Sports Cards pulled one out and had it in his case.

All the T206’s I’ve seen were legit albeit lower grade. I have seen a Cobb red and a Johnson white cap when these were just released on eBay. I kick myself for not paying the $800 for the Cobby.
