?? Type 1 photo question ??

Just picked up at the Hunt auction a nice Conlon photo of NY Highlander Earl Gardner, the one that was used for his t205 card. I see the same photo being offered by another auction house. These photos aren't cheap, how many are there? How do I know that they are real type 1 photos?

There were lots of newspapers back then... every major and mid-sized city had them. So you are inevitably going to see duplication, regardless of the subject matter.

Not sure anyone really knows how many of a given image exist, but these working photos were preserved pretty well (as compared to other antiquities that were often damaged or simply thrown away over time).

I'll defer to others here as to how you determine Type 1. It has been discussed to death over and over. So if you do a search, you'll find many applicable threads right here.

There will be a limited number of each, maybe well under ten. They were sent to newspapers and magazines, but most weren't kept.

You can post scans or a link to the auction for opinion on the photo. I'm never personally bought from Hunt, but assume they would be able to correctly identify a photo.

Most likely under 5 and most definitely under 10 on Gardner. Also it is by Paul Thompson, not conlon. Thirdly, they are not preserved better than most antiquities. The ones that survived yes, but most were thrown away or damaged in the publication process.

I know of at least three of the T205 Gardner photos that exist. Two from The Ring archive and one from Baseball Magazine that you just picked up.
