E.K. Brooks and Sons 1888 Boston Beaneaters Trade Card and Schedule
I just bought this E.K. Brooks and Sons 1888 Boston Beaneaters Trade Card and Schedule at a pretty steep discount and I discovered that there are in fact many different actual cards in the series - though SGC has only graded one so they just graded it as a single trade card without identifying the different title and image on the front.
The one I bought below has the title "Putting on the Curve" and representative image. It looks to me like there is probably a whole set of these and the SGC has only happened to grade one. http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/...pspnciv00m.png http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/...psv4k7imug.png Here is another on Ebay which has at the top "A-Panic-er" and a separate image: http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/...psoecgowde.png And yet another one has "Judgment" as a title and a third graphic http://pastispresent.org/wp-content/...ieBaseball.jpg It's on firm card stock and is considered a "trade card" by the SGC. Once i send mine in they should probably be identifying these by the image and title that is on the card. I suppose I should contact SGC about this? There is one other in the SGC population report here.: http://www.sgccard.com/PopulationReport.aspx?setid=3827 Ill send it into them for authentication - but curious to hear if anyone had any additional info on other versions or other teams available. My collection is totally Boston focused so it fits well but I'm wondering if this was a local only piece. Anyway, its pretty neat and I am excited to get it slabbed so just thought id share. |
4th version "Out on Second"
Here is a fourth card "Out on Second" from a Mears Auction several years ago:

Brownies
In 1887 Palmer cox's book entitled Brownies, Their Book, was published. I suspect these are based upon illustrations in that, since on chapter in deals with the Brownies playing base ball.

Interesting - i just think its neat that there is actually an entire set of cards in 1888 where the SGC previously has it as just one. Im going to try to get in touch with them to see if they can scope out the entire set in their grading table. I know of 4 types but i sure there are more...

Yep you are right - those are most definitely "Brownies" I was able to find four in the set so far - just to make it clearer without the images they are:
Panic-er Judgement! Out on Second Putting on the Curve Im sure there are more. |
Can someone weigh in on whether they think it qualifies as a set? Im planning on contacting the SGC since they've set up the population report as if the set has only one card when in fact the fronts are very distinct. Does anyone have any experience with lobbying the SGC? How does this work?
