Unbelievable. That’s a huge price for that card.

ullmandds 02-06-2018 08:35 PM

Someone call guiness.

iowadoc77 02-06-2018 08:48 PM

For that kind of cash you would think it would be centered. So many people simply buying the number on the flip. Value certainly won’t hold on that one.

jb67 02-06-2018 09:33 PM

Looking at the bid history it appears that two bidders really wanted it.

tjb1952tjb 02-06-2018 09:41 PM

Say what?!?

Wow.........I much prefer my PSA 6.5. Somebody (two) must have really wanted a PSA 7. Registry inflation...........

Touch'EmAll 02-07-2018 08:43 AM

Couple days ago a 1952 Bowman Mays PSA 8 closed on eBay. I had it on my radar, even put in a bid, haha, got squashed! It went for $ 5,958. - whew!

Snapolit1 02-07-2018 08:45 AM

I'm not a crazy person about centering, but I don't like that one at all. Disconcertingly off center.

Touch'EmAll 02-07-2018 08:48 AM

But hey, if you're not wild about the centering, this Mays does have one thing going for it - the seller was guess who.

Me too!

h2oya311 02-07-2018 09:23 AM

It's also on the really old PSA flip, so would get a much harsher grade if re-submitted. That is definitely a registry play or some serious shilling, or perhaps some market manipulation to get the VCP average to look generous before it is re-offered in the next PWCC auction.

I bet we see this card again.

It is our favorite seller to bash. That said it looks like the top bidder really did want it as, it looks like, he put in another safety bid at the end. I am not sure how I can get to manipulation with someone wanting it that badly. I think it gets someone a half point higher in the registry, seriously. I hear that for some the registry game is like crack to an addict.

All unsettling scenarios!

I'll believe this scenario if the card actually sells/was sold.

Great Card! Beautiful!

pokerplyr80 02-07-2018 10:35 AM

First one sold in 6 months. Maybe just a case of 2 guys who were tired of waiting and wanted the card either for a set or a Mays run. Either way it's nice to see and not necessarily a sign of something nefarious. I agree I'd expect to see better centering when an ATH is hit, but not everyone is as concerned with perfect centering as I am.

bobbyw8469 02-07-2018 11:32 AM

Me personally, I don't bash PWCC, not do I feel others do. I have never had a problem with Brent. They do a great job at what they do. I feel as though what people have a problem with is the shennanigans (sp?) that seems to go on with some of their auctions. Is that PWCC's fault or the consignor's fault? I guess PWCC can do a better job of policing things, but how hard is it to do when they run that many individual auctions?

You wouldn't think so, but it seems more and more people are buying the flip, not the card. Remember too, that just one increment below the $2950, there was another bidder willing to pay $2900.

packs 02-07-2018 11:54 AM

Maybe there was and maybe there wasn't. It's hard to tell from bid histories.

I was just saying that this is LIKELY not an investment level card. I am not a dead centering guy either, but when I go for higher grades like this, I prefer pretty darn close. This is another case of 2 people wanting something badly. Many people throw out VCP and history and all of that because as we have said many times here, STUFF TRUMPS EVERYTHING ELSE. If you gotta have it, sometimes you make interesting decisions.

Yup. The presumption is always that it's legit, but on a price this crazy, you do wonder.

vintagetoppsguy 02-07-2018 04:03 PM

No bid retractions, and the same guy is bidding on multiple items from multiple sellers. Yup, probably a shill.

About 400 bucks, or 15% over previous ATH set last year. Higher than expected, but not quite in a category I'd call crazy.

Awful centering, probably a 6 on regrade. Look at the non-PWCC historical prices for better context. And I presume the PWCC high ones were well-centered.

Yes, it wasn't quite a market shift. Still for that card it was kind of high. Probably a registry half point as I said above.
