A Christmas Story: Who are these 3 baseball cards?

The middle one is a T206 I think. Is the far right an Obak?

Bpm0014 12-23-2017 11:35 AM

IS the middle O’Brien? Or Lundgren maybe?

Luke 12-23-2017 11:36 AM

Super tiny on my screen, but my gut says Bresnahan in the middle.

Bpm0014 12-23-2017 11:38 AM

It’s definitley not Bresnahan. The picture is super large on my phone but got smaller when I posted it.

Econteachert205 12-23-2017 11:40 AM

Pfeister seated? Too yellow I guess. Lundgren is a good bet

I watched that movie last night with the family. I talked it up so much because I loved it as a kid. Boy, did it NOT hold up. The family was bored to tears.

Bpm0014 12-23-2017 11:46 AM

No way!! That movie is a classic!

Mountaineer1999 12-23-2017 12:06 PM

1940 Play Ball John Rucker
T206 Ed Reulbach
T206 Jimmy Hart

...and I love the movie but the rest of the family does not like it at all

Bpm0014 12-23-2017 12:09 PM

Reulbach. Great call.

Bpm0014 12-23-2017 12:11 PM

100% not Jimmy Hart.

Are you sure it's not Hart?

Bpm0014 12-23-2017 12:59 PM

Wow. Now I think you may be correct. The white spot in th middle of the card is throwing me off...

Similar experience with my boys, only I took it a bit farther. Watched the movie a few years ago with my 4 sons, all bored by it. Then while racing at the NDR Soap Box Derby national championship in Cleveland a few years ago I took them all to the house in the movie. Didn't tell them where we were going only that it was a big surprise. When we got there, if eye rolling and dirty glares could kill, I was informed that I was old and this visit was stupid. They did want me to buy a leg lamp but the wifey nixed that idea, ordered a small one online from them anyway.

These kids today confuse me. Electronic interference always running, anime and Pokemon. Glad they at least spend time in the woods hunting with me.

Bpm0014 12-23-2017 02:28 PM

100% is Jimmy Hart haha. Great call.

btcarfagno 12-23-2017 02:57 PM

My kids love it. Wife hates it. She allows me one watch per Christmas. She did get me a huge leg lamp one year about 10 years ago. Sits atop our bar.

Like so much that I loved when I was young. It's funny, so much of the stuff my father would watch he would build up, and I would wonder what he saw in it. Now I'm wondering what I ever saw in some of these things.

I guess I sound like the Grinch. I think I'll go watch A Charlie Brown Christmas. Now that one still holds up, at least for me.

orly57 12-23-2017 04:16 PM

I've had quite a few family nights with the movies I watched as a kid in the 80s. I think The Princess Bride, The Sandlot, and Goonies still stand up well. I'm missing a few. Gremlins and Beetljuice do not. Cheesy effects are glaring.

All of the times that I've watched A Christmas Story & I never noticed those cards on Ralphie's headboard... :(

I'm a sucker for that movie, mostly because it's based on the childhood memories of Jean Shepherd, who grew up in my hometown of Hammond, IN.

I make sure that it plays non stop for the entire day on Christmas... (my wife thinks there is something wrong with me)

My wife and I discovered it about 25 years ago and watch it every year during the Holidays. Love it!

Kids couldn't care less.

Good call on the baseball cards above his head. Never knew what those were.

As the movie was supposed to take place in the 40s, can we conclude that Ralphie was into both raw modern and vintage?

icollectDCsports 12-24-2017 08:07 AM

I watch it at least once every year.

Same here. Only break tomorrow though will be for the Steelers game. Haha.

Correct. No stupid relic cards for Ralphie.

Well, to be fair, he was hoping for a strong redemption offer from Ovaltine.

brian1961 12-24-2017 06:24 PM

Well, at least it seems Ralphie loves pre-war vintage baseball cards. Hey, they won't shoot his eye out!:D They'll just strain our eyes figuring out what in the world they are!;) ---Brian Powell

In the hundreds of times I’d watched the movie, I never noticed this. About a week ago it was brought up on twitter and then Beckett had a post on it. I love when we can find cards in pop culture.

Interesting (to me anyway) tie in with a baseball movie and A Christmas Story.

Darren McGavin played both Ralphie's father in A Christmas Story and Gus Sands the shady gambler in The Natural. What is interesting is how a controversy surrounding his work in The Natural led to his getting the role in A Christmas Story.

Before shooting began on The Natural, there was a big brouhaha regarding billing for the film. It was pretty much an all star cast and agents were fighting over who would go where. McGavin came to the project a bit late and was told that his billing would have to be well below where it would normally be. He made a big stink and told them not to credit him at all. This led to a bunch of Hollywood insider publicity for McGavin, who parlayed the notoriety from the controversy into a starting role in the interesting little project that was at the time making the rounds at the various studios.

A Christmas Story.

I assume the T206 cards were his dad's. The 1940 time traveling Play Ball inclusion is forever a mystery as the movie looks set in 1939.

mybuddyinc 12-25-2017 12:21 PM

I wonder if the Reulbach was a Hindu ............. :):)

A Christmas Story.

Interesting. I think McGavin's portrayal of the cranky "old man" is crucial to the charm of A Christmas Story. The guy who played the father in the recent live TV version just couldn't do the character justice. Also, I really enjoyed McGavin's portrayal of Carl Kolchak in the '70s series, The Night Stalker. Also an entertaining character very much dependent on McGavin's unique persona.
