as you know, i think this is a really nice photo, especially with the various types of cameras. i dont have the conlon photo reference book anymore, but from memory it could be conlon kneeling 2 to the left of mcgraw. i hope someone can be of more help. it is worth keeping this thread alive. may be a identifiable sportswriter or two also.

thecatspajamas 03-02-2014 02:57 PM

Not so sure about the kneeling guy being Conlon, as his ears seem to protrude much more prominently than Conlon's did. Several shots of Conlon for comparison:

Damn.. That one with the blonde curl. I am not sure if that makes him cooler or not so cool. Ha! In any case old Chas ain't in this one.

JoeyF1981 03-02-2014 05:02 PM

it does kinda look like conlon in a way but cant really tell

baseballart 03-02-2014 09:27 PM

My guess is that it it's. Fred Lieb, second from the right

Joey, there is a website 'somewhere' that focuses on journalists - writers, photographers, etc. I don't have the url and google isn't helping at the moment, but perhaps this post will jog someone's memory. The site contains copies of obituaries, photos, etc - really great stuff.

Good luck.

I think this is what Scott is referring to. On the site Baseball fever there are threads "Meet the Sports Writers" and "Meet the announcers." I couldn't find one for photographers, but it is possible some of the Photogs could be grouped in with the writers. I haven't searched through it all the way, but it is VERY thorough.

Here is a link to the Writers thread. Hope it helps you Joey.

Mark, thanks - that isn't what I was referring to, but the format is similar. The site I located last year seems to go on forever. It's massive.

JoeyF1981 03-03-2014 10:41 AM

Thank you guys! Its tough putting a name to the faces in the picture but hopefully I can find some kind of info. Im sure theres got to be at least one famous photographer in there somewhere.

thecatspajamas 03-03-2014 10:44 AM

Scott, you tease! I hope that somebody knows where that site is, or else I'm going to go mad looking for it, as that is exactly the kind of info-laden site I've been wishing for to research photographers' backgrounds. These guys are TOUGH to find any kind of info on other than the occasional tagline!

Lance, I'll try to figure out who I was looking for when I stumbled on the site - it was some obscure (to me) journalist.

On the back of the photo written in pencil it says

Carl Nesensohn
photographers + managers
before world series

thecatspajamas 03-04-2014 12:24 PM

Carl Nesensohn was a New York Times / Wide World photographer. Interesting story here about a photo he took titled, "The Burning of the 'Morro Castle.'"

http://books.google.com/books?id=Dqw...graphy&f=false

He could have written the note on the back, or someone at the paper could have written it to ensure that proper credit for the photo was given. Either way, Brooklyn never played the Giants in a World Series. Perhaps there was an exhibition game in 1922 between the two teams and the editor or whoever wrote the note misidentified the event, or perhaps Robinson was on hand for the Yankees vs Giants World Series in 1922 and snagged a photo op (seems less likely, but who knows?)

JoeyF1981 03-04-2014 12:32 PM

Was he a well known photographer?

thecatspajamas 03-04-2014 12:38 PM

No idea. I hadn't heard of him before I started Googling, but it may just be that he was not a "primarily baseball" photographer. I admit to being somewhat of an uncultured buffoon about such things when they fall outside the realm of baseball.

bgar3 03-04-2014 01:09 PM

from a quick google search, i have found him described by Christie's auction house as the most important NY times photographer in the 20's to 30's, and another description that had his starting time with the NY Times as 1916. (1898 -1970). Time period certainly fits. Really curious about this assemblage.

CALL 911?!?!

The first of Joey's photos to hit the public market since the "break in". That I have noticed.

http://www.rmyauctions.com/1920_Gian...e-LOT5319.aspx

What I find interesting is most of Joey's photos(including this one) have been removed/moved by Joey rather than posted in one place to try and spread the word/ tell peeps to be on the look out. WEIRD

I know... dead horse but seriously... do we call the cops? Let the auction house know?? I know RMY would do the right thing either way in this instance. A free plug for them:) they do have some great stuff for you fellow photo collectors.

Maybe his one wasn't stolen or... maybe he sold it before and this is all some big coincidence. Or… maybe it is something else.

Just some food for thought as I am hungry(been pretty quiet around here).

And yes.. it is the same EXACT photo.

Joey needs to put all of his stolen photos in photo bucket or some other image-hosting service.

I gave Joey the benefit of the doubt on the robbery, but his photos showing up in auctions is going to have to be explained.

He can post the police report and he can put all of his stolen photos in photo bucket or some other image-hosting service, which is what anyone would do if they wanted other collectors to be on the look-out for them. Instead, he deleted all of his images and the first we see of them is in this RMY auction. Not good at all.

Obviously he won't as he hasn't already.

Deertick 06-19-2014 05:15 PM

Was there ever any verification that he was in possesion of anything? If you add up the cost of his "pick-ups", it was quite a spending spree.

thecatspajamas 06-19-2014 06:14 PM

He tended to not hold onto the expensive pieces for very long, apparently selling one off to fund the next. He offered this particular photo to me on a couple of occasions, but I think he had more in it than I was willing to pay. It seemed like what got him in trouble was when he would win the next piece before the previous piece was sold, and then the scrambling would begin, often accompanied by a tale of woe and change of ebay ID. It really did seem to all be a product of his buying habits rather than a scheme to make money. Or at least, if he was trying to make money, he was terrible at it, as I don't think I ever saw any of his flips actually turn a profit (though I'm sure he made plenty of deals I missed due to the ever-changing ebay IDs).

Runscott 06-19-2014 06:15 PM

Yes, he bought tons of stuff.

He just sent an email telling me that he sold this one and a few others prior to the robbery. Regardless, it's only natural that as his photos started showing up at auction, questions are going to be asked.

He knows the solution, but for some reason doesn't want make the police report or scans available to us. I'm not going to publicly speculate about his reasons.

Forever Young 06-19-2014 06:54 PM

Nevermind

prewarsports 06-19-2014 10:09 PM

Just so people are clear, I bought this photo and one other image from Joey approximately 6 days (from memory but I have paypal receipts I can look up) before the "break In" and was actually concerned myself when he made the announcement as the photos had been paid for but not received. I received them in the mail two days after the announcement. If anyone (police, curious collectors, lawyers) wants to chat about the photos or the purchase I would be happy to talk with them about it. I have neither bought nor received any photos from Joey since the "Break In". I didn't think anything of the timing until Ben brought it to my attention today so I figured I would just throw this information out there.
