7am - Goodwin still going

Its after 7am here on the East Coast, and the Goodwin auction is still going. Anyone else wake up this morning and place bids?

Rob
:)

Texxxx 07-12-2014 05:49 AM

I didn't wake up to bid. Just getting up to go to work. I checked to see if my bids where still good. They are, but want find out till tonight when I get in if they hold up. Some crazy bidding going on.

scooter729 07-12-2014 06:00 AM

Wow - didn't realize and just saw the final countdown. Looks like an 8 AM ET closing time. Some impressive prices out there!

darwinbulldog 07-12-2014 06:54 AM

Yep. I let one go last night and changed my mind when I got up and saw the bid that had topped mine was still in the lead.

Insane prices on T206 Ghost and the Lattimore Broad Leaf...makes no sense.

Mullaney is no longer the most expensive scrap ever bought (that I am aware of). It was until this one. Great looking, weird card. Congrats to the winner. Some other T206 prices were insane again :).

MVSNYC 07-12-2014 09:22 AM

Leon- FWIW, this ghost doesn't hold a candle to your Mullaney. Period.

Blunder19 07-12-2014 09:40 AM

Mike first off I won the goodwin ghost. The goodwin ghost is a huge card. Ghost of a different player on the front printed in multiple colors. It's almost like 2 cards.

To find a ghost with a different player in the front is insanely tough. And a Hofer? . And multiple color runs. It's impossible. I only know of only Johnny's bender ghost as a comparable. And ask Johnny if he would sell his card for 11k. The answer would be no.

This is a sick card.

pencil1974 07-12-2014 09:55 AM

Had a few bids in myself with the only one holding up being the Jimmy Foxx signed postcard.

Great card Jamie. Congrats. Some of these scraps have a mesmerizing (to me) aspect to them and your new acquisition surely does.

I'm not much into ghosts and scraps but looking at your new card gave me a woody. :D:D:D

Congrats on a good one!

Blunder19 07-12-2014 10:12 AM

Thanks Leon.

Did you buy your mullaney off ebay? I thought I remember you did.

ebay is one of the worst places to sell. And one of the best places to buy. If the mullaney was sold in goodwin would bring in way more. Also the fact that errors continue to sky rocket each year. With your card being in your collection for a few years it has appreciated for sure

.......

Yes, and there was quite the controversy surrounding auction specifics when it was sold. If anyone wants to rehash old stuff the link below is where the 30+ yr owner of the Mullaney listed it on ebay, followed by him posting it on our board, around 8 yrs ago. (his first thread on it)

Hi Jamie, congrats on the card. it just doesn't do it for me, but that's why they make many flavors of ice cream- to each his own. with that said, very happy for you.

Is this card considered scrap? Or do you think it once appeared in a pack of Sweet Caps? Nice pickup ;)

Sean 07-12-2014 12:00 PM

Wow Jaime, nice going. I saw that card, but I knew that I couldn't afford it. :o

Supply and demand, no? It's all good.

oldjudge 07-12-2014 12:55 PM

Peter--yes....but what are you really talking about when you say supply and demand. It's not just the absolute number of buyers and sellers. It is also a function of the aggressiveness of the buyers and sellers. Buyer aggressiveness can moderate quickly when bubbles burst. Supply and demand caused Tulipmania too.

Sean 07-12-2014 12:57 PM

I must be missing some bit of pop culture knowledge. What is Tulipmania?

mrvster 07-12-2014 01:00 PM

Jamie.....

Congrats on a HUGE pick up!

No one even realizes what you've won!:);)

The market is still quite young on these.....most collectors don't even understand them....

I was offered 15 K on bender a few years ago and turned it down....

Leons multi strike is a multi K card...

Very few even understand these cards...

Merritt/ Crawford was a lmost mine last year....literally almost cried when I lost it....

It is a very rare scrap......The color of Crawford overprinted on Merritt ....look at the "eyes" piercing thru on Merritts fore head...

1000% scrap.....

rare backs were going cheaper a few years ago also!! I could get a drum for under 1 k no problem/ bl 350's at $100.00.....ect ect...

the scraps have followed suit with rare backs ....

altho they are 1000 X rarer than some

hmmmmmmmmmmmmm....

I have only seen 2 HOFER ghost front images the last 15 years!!!!:)

you own the other Jamie
(just guestimates)

50 wagners

175 plank

350 Magies

14 brown oms

100 bl 460s

2 hofer ghost overprint front printers scrap:eek:

I dare someone to show ANOTHER....id love to see....

:)

you could name your price on that card one day.....when collectors of the set realize really what they are....

they are not even "T206".....the are "fantasy" T206.....

alternative......

not the production card....a tool used to set the presses up.....and inadvertently "created" some very weird/cool/ different/ unique "eerie" cards accidentally! JUST AMZING....

these single examples would be centerpieces in any collections...

:)

In Holland, I believe in the 1600's, exotic tulips began to sell for huge sums of money, and it started a mania. People began paying king's ransoms for the most exceptional examples. And then in the blink of an eye, when everyone suddenly realized how silly it was, the market went poof and the tulips became worthless.
The tulip craze is now a metaphor for prices skyrocketing without rhyme or reason.

And I agree with Jay. The supply of these things may be small, but if they go out of favor one day, the prices will plummet. Not saying it will happen, just that it could.

Sean 07-12-2014 01:31 PM

Thanks Barry. :)

mrvster 07-12-2014 01:37 PM

if that were the case....

than the rare backs should follow suit:);)

tulipmania and t206 printers scrap metaphor is not relevant unless you apply that to all the rarities in baseball:)

There are some similarities and some differences Johnny. One thing they have in common is skyrocketing prices. The factors that lead to those increases arguably could be different.

oldjudge 07-12-2014 01:51 PM

The big difference is that one was made to be issued and the other to be thrown away.

Maybe that is one of the reasons the scraps are so popular. They obviously are unique and were not meant to be in circulation...and voila...you have so called error/freak cards that are highly desirable and never meant to see the light of day.

I can definitely see the appeal on so many levels. The "supposed to be thrown away" reality is something that boosted the interest in these guys.

I think that the excitement and enthusiasm that Johnny has expressed on this board over the years has a lot to do with the increased demand of these T206 scraps. I would say the same for Paul and signed T206s.

Peter_Spaeth 07-12-2014 03:03 PM

My belief is that it is a very small number of folks driving up demand for these. If that is the case, then people becoming sellers rather than buyers could dramatically impact price.

I think that's true unlike the demand for rare T206 backs which are chased by any type or T206 collector. But who knows? I like the ghost images, I just don't think I'd pay 5 figures for them, mainly because there is no way to know how many are out there. Of course I also didn't buy Apple stock in 1985.

mrvster 07-12-2014 04:11 PM

Scrap are

like "snow flakes" , each one is unique onto themselves....

rare backs are not as rare as the scraps.....the natural progression of collecting rarities will lite up the prices on this small sub population of cards...

I used to think it was a "few" of us driving up the prices, but the reality is the market is growing for these, and the supply is shrinking! I have a business degree(B.S. from the college of N.J.)....spent many years studying economics.....statistics......ect......but you don't even need to read to understand these things are .....the fact is, the prices will climb on these relative to rare backs and the Wagner....proofs....Plank ......natural progression...market will grow....an easy prediction for me.....

I have not bid hard on any cards in a while, nor have some of the "few" in this market....much more interest has gained through EDUCATION OF WHAT SCRAP IS!

:D

If any one needs to know, you can ask.....education of the set is key....

I made no point in "hiding" what these are.....I have simply tried to educate "what" they are over the years....KINDA like shooting myself in the foot....I could've kept them quiet and kept scooping them up "cheap" on ebay when no one cared....Instead, I decided to divulge the actual significance/rarity of them in correlation to the printing/ history of this iconic set.....

Now I can't even afford one!!....yes bitter sweet in that my collection increases in value, but that not why I "hype" them up.....if that was the case, id be a "flipper" and make money off them.....everyone that knows me , knows I cant part with them(unless WAgner one day)......these cards have yet to be even realized their true potential/ rarity...

tell me, would you rather own a card where there are multiple , or very few examples?? and the all look the same??? or would you like to own the MErritt with a HOFER ONLY ONE...ghosted on front????

try to find a similar example of these....THEY DONT EXIST!!!

Paul has his "niche" and I think its a great one.....the actual players have HELD his t206....in my eyes, they have been touched with magic......and are priceless.....I respect the set....and will always....it's always giving up secrets, even after 100 years!.....scrap are the hidden gems...

:)

this is just my humble opinion......I believe in these cards 100% ....I'm an ordinary guy just extremely intrigued by these cards, and have figured out some secrets very few have....I'm willing to share with the community....it's a cumulative of my observations and conversations with others like me...

these cards will grow exponentially.....

if any one has one and would like to part with a scrap, PLEASE email or PM me....:)

;)

ullmandds 07-12-2014 04:26 PM

Personally I gravitate towards rarities...I'd much rather have a WWG ruth card which is much rarer than it's goudey counterpart...despite the fact the WWG are worth significantly less.

I have lots of cards of which only a handful have been seen over the years. I've always preferred Coupons/t215-I to T206 because they are much tougher...while still flaunting the sometimes beautiful front poses.

My tepididy for t206 is documented...BUT even I can appreciate the uniqueness of these scraps. I love unique cards...one of a kind even better. Cards that help to understand the process by which they were made...makes em even cooler. Fact they were meant to be discarded...that's probably top 2 or 3 attributes of a fine collectible.

Prices being paid for some of them...crazy! But many of us are crazy...I certainly am!

Analysis paralysis of collectors constantly trying to "create" scraps from non scraps...kind of annoying!

Kudos to you crazy guys for collecting these...I do think there are likely numerous handfuls buried in collections...but there is no denying they are tough!

Johny...are u from JErsey? Where'd u go to school?

Sorry we only do scraps here, and occasionally rare backs. Everything else is too mundane. :D

Is the Old Put Cobb really unique?

bcbgcbrcb 07-12-2014 06:58 PM

When I still had them, my collection focused almost exclusively on rare and one-of-a-kind items, very few people ever seemed to care about those treasures......

tiger8mush 07-12-2014 07:37 PM

i picked this guy up ...
