August pickups

I find it surprising that nobody started a new pickup thread yet. After all, there is a somewhat significant show being held this weekend.

Let's see some new acquisitions, fellas.

Best regards and happy collecting,

Eric

Thanks to Jeff for the t206's =)

Nice EPDG run you have going there. I was going to offer to help you out but I only have a Burchell as my sole EPDG but you already have it anyway.

And another member posted the 52 Pierce and the card looked amazing so thought I'd add one to my collection seeing as I'm a Sox fan.

Nice card. I may not be a big t206 collector but I know that's a tough one.

Really want to thank Sean1125 for thinking of me when this card came across his radar. It graded out at the show the other day. I've owned higher technical grades of this card, but this one is far and away my favorite and the keeper of all of them, due to its registration/focus. I love the colors and image on the '41 PlayBall Joe D, and how it represents his hallowed accomplishment that year. But it always seems the damn thing has ghostly halo effects around the top border line, his shoulder, his bat, and especially round the face-- rendering it so blurry. Thanks, Sean. Finally a '41 PB Joe D that I can look at without feeling like I've had a few too many cocktails-- cheers!

That Burgess card is pretty awesome. I don't look much at post war cards, but this has me pondering it.

ls7plus 08-03-2015 07:17 PM

Someday I WILL get a scanner, but thanks to fellow board member Glynn Parsons for making it possible for me to acquire a 1913-1915 Pinkerton Christy Mathewson at the National. One of just two graded by PSA, and none graded by SGC. Thanks also to Leon for his expert advice as to the likely number in existence (you guys know I like 'em RARE) and avoiding the one graded "authentic" (poor eye appeal that even the scorecard back couldn't make up for in my eyes) in favor of Glynn's much better card!

Plus, purchased a very nice, well-centered 1934 Gold Medal Flour Dizzy Dean (a set issued to commemerate the '34 World Series) in PSA 3. To me, it represents the NL's last 30 game winner in his best season (Dean was 30-7 that year, with a 2.66 ERA, and led the league in strikeouts when there weren't that many of them with, I believe, 195, in a year when the league's ERA was 4.06). Fabulous pitcher before hurting first his toe and then his shoulder when he tried to come back too soon.

Best wishes,

Larry

Side note, I really need to work on scanning rather than taking bad phone photos of cards...

Some recent pickups (including some from The National), the 29 Gomez and 28 Averill are upgrades...

http://www.starsofthediamond.com/19zeearbuckle.jpg http://www.starsofthediamond.com/15zeecwilliams.jpg http://www.starsofthediamond.com/23zeewaner.jpg http://www.starsofthediamond.com/24zeewaner.jpg http://www.starsofthediamond.com/29zeegomez.jpg http://www.starsofthediamond.com/19zeevance.jpg http://www.starsofthediamond.com/28zeeaverill.jpg

The last one isn't anything special to non-Zeenut guys but it is a very tough card. In the 1927 checklist you will see two versions of the Ralph Shinners card, one with the normal "27" date on front and another with "1927" (which is the only card in the set like that). The "1927" is one that I had never seen before. Happy to get it.

"Some paper loss!" That's it? So because of that, your card gets the same grade as one that was run over by a monster truck in a septic tank runoff field. Congratulations to you, owner of the greatest proof I've ever seen of the adage, "Buy the card, not the holder."
