T214 Victory & T215 Red Cross Tobacco Cards

We don't talk too much about a few of the esoteric T card sets, T214 & T215, so maybe at minimum a few members have one to show? As a back (and scarcity) collector I really enjoy them...

Mine too, I just remember buying a small group of cards from a collector from Arkansas that was at the show and I am nearly certain his name was Jerry as well.

Red Cross

2 Attachment(s)
This is a Type 1. 2 similar condition Type 2's closed on eBay this afternoon for over $300 each. They had writing, heavy wear, and a hole punched in the card.

I bid on them, but I didn't think they would go for more than $150 each and I was at work when the auctions closed, so I was blown out of the water.

It is surprising how many of these cards, both Type I and Type 2, have a hole punched in the card, and 2 numbers on the back, with a line through one of the numbers.

I wonder if these cards could be redeemed for something, such as tobacco or cigarettes?

I haven't been able to get a T214 yet, but it is on my want list, along with a Type 2 Red Cross.

Rick

brass_rat 07-02-2015 04:41 PM

Hey Rick (and others),

I'm the knucklehead that bought the two horrible condition cards on ebay today. I honestly thought they would cost me maybe $130 each. Had it not been for one other person on each, they would have been $200. But I had a couple of beers last night and put in a higher snipe than I otherwise would have. (Don't drink and snipe?)

So I'm the idiot that overpaid, but I like them. I have one other with a hole punch and writing...I thought they belonged together. :)

Cheers,
Steve

Mikehealer 07-02-2015 04:44 PM

Nice cards Scott and Jerry. Victory's are my favorite issue. I've sold most of my Baseball cards, but I still have one T214 left and easily my favorite Tinker pose.

Hi Steve, congratulations on your pick ups. These are pretty scarce and they are pretty cool, so I really don't feel that you overpaid.

I might have to start drinking a couple of beers while I am bidding. Maybe that is why I don't win anything! :) Or it could be that I am too cheap.

Rick

Pat R 07-02-2015 05:03 PM

Sean, That Willets is a fantastic 1.

brass_rat 07-02-2015 05:07 PM

Steve,

I dropped out of the first one at $80 (I was set to go $150, but then it started popping and I just moved to the second), and the second at $231 ( I was thinking, criminy, what's going on with this? Oh just stop!). Glad I wasn't the guy that bid you all the way up, but I sure did want one of those. For what it is worth, I figured they could hit $400, I just didn't have the funds to go as high as you. I have seen worse go for more. Enjoy them!

baztacula 07-02-2015 06:15 PM

I'm sorta interested in a Red Cross (Type 1) but only if it's a Detroit Tiger. So if anybody has one to sell, let me know. SGC preferred.

Nice cards, Steve. Glad you got 'em. I was about to start a thread saying, "Who in the world outbid me on these?", but it was already here. :)

trdcrdkid 07-02-2015 06:38 PM

I was another of the bidders on those T215s on eBay. I was the high bidder for a while until they went above $80, and I was thinking I might put in some higher bids, but I forgot to do it before the auctions ended. When I saw what they went for, my eyes popped. Congrats on the cards, Steve -- I'm glad they went to a board member.

Unfortunately, I don't have a T214 (one of my white whales as a type collector), but I do have a couple of T215s, both Type 2. I've had the Schulte for over 20 years, and it's in one of the album pages I've posted pictures of. The Byrne I got maybe 10-15 years ago on eBay. It has better eye appeal in person than in the scan; the creases aren't as noticeable.

Amazing cards guys! I've owned a Red Cross before, but never a Victory before, but hope to someday. A pirate back won't ever happen so why worry about it.... Anyway, my question is about how many of each- Red Cross type1, type 2, and Victory backed cards are out there as compared to say a t206 or is there an exact, approximate count of each type in existence? I'm just being curious.
Thanks for sharing.

Mike H.- Tinker pose Victory is amazing!

Here is my poor example of a Red Cross. What's special about this one is that is a Jersey City Purtell. I collect Jersey City cards and never thought I would ever pick up this card. It's hard enough to find a single Red Cross example let alone a specific player so when I picked this one up I was ecstatic.

Andy, that's great. I understand just how you feel, getting a rare back with exactly the right player.

Hi Tim,
You have interesting questions about populations. The pop reports for all of the grading companies are a complete mess, so i wouldn't rely on them.

Here is my completely flying by the seat of my pants numbers:

T214 - only 63 of the possible 90 cards are known to exist. I would guess that only 1 to 3 cards of each of the 63 are known to exist.

T215-1 and 2 - my guess is between 1 and 6 or so of each of the known cards. You might find a few players with slightly more than 6, but I doubt it.

Compare this to 1000 examples or more, of many of the T206 cards.

I hope others who are more knowledgeable than me will chime in with their estimates.

Rick

brass_rat 07-04-2015 04:10 PM

Rick makes an excellent point about the population reports. The T215 types are frequently mislabeled. Heck, I believe someone once posted a T215 labeled as a T206. (Although that might make some people happy. :D)

I don't know much about T214, but I'd figure his estimates are reasonable for T215. It might be that there are a number of raw examples in collections.

Cheers,
Steve

With the population estimates above (1-6 examples of each player) I doubt I'll ever see an upgrade for this card. Needless to say it is the key card in my Jersey City collection.

Thanks on the Ames, Steve. I agree that it's sorta high grade for this issue. I think, except for the Cobbs, there are easily less than 5 T215 examples per player in each series. Amazing that Lipset and those guys compiled the checklists that they did. Here's another two cards from T215-2. I have about 8 or 9 from this series...

2 Attachment(s)
Hi David,

I only have 1 Type 3, and the borders are similar to the card that you asked about.

There is a dealer on eBay who has had a bunch of Types 3's listed for several years. Quite a few of his seem to have the same cut, but his pictures are blurry so it is difficult to say for sure.

Jobu 07-05-2015 09:03 AM

Is there a way to estimate who ought to be featured on the remaining 27 cards using T206 print groups? I know there might have been some substitutions based on retirements and deaths, but I was curious how the known T214 examples line up with the different print groups.

I'm not an expert on this set, but the T214s were printed four years after t206s. I don't think they followed the T206 print groups.

I recall Tim making this point about the T213 and T215 sets, and I think it holds true for the T214s as well. Sorry, I can't find that thread. :o

Thanks Sean. I was aware of the 1915 date for T214 but I am not one who hesitates to fire away with the questions when something pops into my head! It makes perfect sense that there isn't a match and if there was one I suspect someone would have figured it out. To quote the bank robber from Dirty Harry "I gots to know."

Pete, I was wondering the same thing myself (though I love T213-1 so don't mind it too much).
