Howe’s Hunter 09-03-2014 07:18 AM

Actually, July, August and September pickups (one from each of my three lists)

Back in July, Mark Macrae saw my posting in Mark Bowers' National want list thread and let me know he had recently acquired a card with Howe's stamp on the back, and asked if I was interested. When I saw the scan, I was a very happy guy. It was the Mathewson white cap that was on my known-but-lost list, having lost track of it when Jim Schnieder sold it on eBay after winning the near complete T206 set from Mastro back in 2008. Mark had just gotten it from the estate of a collector who had around 400 T206s, and it was one of them. Mark was nice enough to drop it off here in Omaha on his way through to the National. It is actually card #257 in the rebuilt collection.

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...psa6047522.gif

Last week, long time board member Frank Bennett reached out to let me know he had just acquired a Wiltse card with Howe's stamp. This one was new, or news to me, as I hadn't heard about or seen it before. Thanks for such a quick deal, Frank, and getting this card back with the others. It is actually #260.

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...pse520c604.gif

Back in late 2012, board member Troy reached out to me and let me know he had a card with a lot of sentimental value that had Howe's stamp on the back. He sent scans of that beauty, and about two weeks later let me know he had found another card in his collection that had the stamp also. It wasn't until about two weeks ago, while going back through old emails that it dawned on me that I never asked if the second card had any sentimental value to him, or if it might be purchased. It arrived yesterday morning in the mail, becoming #261 in the rebuilt collection.

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps10a1f761.gif

In the last three months, I've gotten three previously unknown cards, one that had been lost for six years, and another that I knew the owner of, but hadn't been able (or just hadn't asked) to purchase. My post on the B/S/T thread let me know of another that I now know the owner of, and also let me know of one that I had known the owner, but it has changed hands, without the benefit of knowing where it went. That keeps the total number of cards I know that have the stamp out there at 33. 11 I know the owner of, 22 are lost in the general population.

Thanks to everyone on this board who have been so helpful this past seven years as I've tried to rebuild the collection. I'll never know if or when it is complete, but it sure is fun seeing all the great cards Howe owned at one time.

the 'stache 09-03-2014 08:09 AM

Thank you, Dan. :)

Types 1 , 2 , and 3 Joe Cronin Goudey "Wide Pens" R314

....finally just finished collecting all three of the 1935/1936 Cronin types ; differences in cropping are evident by comparing the foot , cap , and sleeve .
.. I think The type 2 ( no " Litho In USA " ) has been exposed to a lifetime of cigarette smoke because the normal border color is white , just like the type 1 .

...He doesn't appear in the Type 4 and only Detroit Tigers are in the Type 5 ( I think Hank Greenberg is the only player in all five types ?? ). Tim ??

These were discussed a few months back, but I just got them this week. Don't worry, I know they are skinned and trimmed. I can't imagine who had the patience to skin these. The Burrell you would think it was blank backed, it was skinned so neatly. Fronts look okay, though, and they were cheap. I'll have a few more examples of good cards gone bad when they come in over the next week. That sounds like a theme for a thread, maybe?

Need some advice on this one

7 Attachment(s)
I got my first T211, I am very excited for this one. The advice I need is this, I bought a T206 Kissinger in low grade (probably would be poor to fair), and they sent this American Caramel instead. I am fine with the American Caramel, but it is not a set I collect. The seller contacted me and said they would refund me $10 to return the card, which is very fair. My question is what would the American Caramel be worth? It is graded VG. If I decide to keep it, I would like to send an offer to make it fair for both them and me. I figure if I send it back, it would cost the seller at least $15 to send me the T206 (since they would refund me $10 to send it back, and about $5 to ship the other). Would it be worth it to them to just have me keep it? Should I offer them something to even up the cost? What roughly is the value of the American Caramel? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Oh, the little pin is a Red Cross tobacco pin. I was hoping to win the 3 Red Cross cards in the Legendary Auction last week, but no luck.

Luke 09-08-2014 11:49 PM

That Cox E120 is worth about $25. There don't seem to be a lot of people collecting them. I've bought over 100 of them in the past year and have a pretty good idea of the market. If you were to offer them like $5-7 I bet they would see that as fair and be happy to have the issue resolved.

Thanks, I have never bought one (I never have even shopped for one), and was thinking of keeping it to just have one from the series. But if that is all they are worth, I will send it back and get the T206 I originally bought. I appreciate the advice.
