September Pickups

I will start off the month with my latest pickup; 1952
Topps Ed Mathews and the nicest PSA 1 you'll ever see.
Thanks Doug C [for the card].

Doug, GREAT card, perfect centering. Congratulations!

I'll second that, great card, Doug!

Actually I'm the the one that sold the card, but I appreciate the compliments anyway! :D

Robextend 09-02-2011 01:42 PM

Awesome Mathews! I am glad to see all the HOF RC guys chime in!! :)

scmavl 09-02-2011 01:46 PM

So far this month, this is about all I've gotten...

Guess who is busting a CASE of 1991 Score to try and get a Mantle auto card?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ne/chipper.jpg

There are tons more Chippers, I just grabbed a handful for the photo. I'm about 2/3 of the way through the case... No Mantle yet.

MilBraves 09-02-2011 05:57 PM

More Hanks added to the collection

3 Attachment(s)
1954-1956 Spic and Span Lou Burdette and Hank Aaron. Really excited about the Aaron. It would grade a poor, but it's a very hard card to find.

Attachment 45153

1955 Hank Aaron double header. Love this series!
Attachment 45154

The prettiest "good" card I've seen.
Attachment 45155

scmavl 09-02-2011 05:59 PM

That '55 Aaron looks mighty good for a 2, Scott!

MilBraves 09-02-2011 06:26 PM

I just got it in the mail today and when I opened up the envelope and pulled it out, I couldn't believe how nice it was. I won it off Ebay, and the it looked good on there, but you really never know until it is in your hand. It does have a small crease on the back that is only apparent when the card is looked at from an angle.

BasherBoy 09-02-2011 06:51 PM

picked this one up. Plugs the biggest hole in my 52 Tribe set.

I always liked that card more than his '54 Topps. Very nice! :)

Theres a 91 Mantle Auto on the bay that is numbered 0007 but for some reason graded a N0 PSA Authentic according to the cert verification on PSA. Not sure if it was because PSA did not give autos a numerical grade at the time. Its worth a shot though for a nice auto despite the grade.

Thanks Doug C.

I may be the only person in pickup thread history to get compliments for selling a card. I think those were meant for you, but I'll take whatever endorsements I can get! :D

jthorst75 09-03-2011 10:14 AM

Thats how good the Mathews is; it gets compliments for the seller and maybe the buyer.

ThoseBackPages 09-03-2011 10:32 AM

the centering on that Mathews is amazing!

I'm pretty much tapped out on modern rookies, so I toil with obscure/odd variations from time to time. Finally got around to picking up a 1990 Topps glossy rookies Griffey with the test strip, and a 1989 Upper Deck Dick Schoefield with Griffey Jr. rear overprint...

Nice pickups Dan! That Portrait was definitely a nice upgrade.

If it turns out to be a 1953 Topps Mantle you are going to have to remove that "I'm not Doug" reason for editing from your post with the '52 Topps Mathews because I just bought one today. :D

jthorst75 09-07-2011 10:47 PM

Congrats, lets see your Mathews. If you do post it do I get congratulated? As far as the scan goes, I see it in every post thats says "I can't see the scan"--weird? And yes it is a 1953 Mickey Mantle PSA 1 but a nice one!

scmavl 09-08-2011 07:38 AM

That's the nicest PSA 1 I've seen!

I bought a PSA 3 '53 Topps Mantle so maybe that's why people are getting us mixed up. I do have the scan from eBay, but I'm going to rescan it when it arrives and then post it. I will make sure to put in the post that any congratulations that I get for the card be addressed to you to make up for all of the ones I got for the '52 Mathews you bought from me. I did use some of the money I got from the Mathews to buy it so technically you do deserve some of the credit! :D

I really can't see the scan in your posts, but I saw the card in your photo album. It's a really nice looking PSA 1. Congratulations! :)

jthorst75 09-08-2011 11:07 AM

Thats strange, but yes it is the one in my photo album. It has great centering just like the Mathews but it has a small pinhole which doesn't bug me too much.

The pinhole isn't very noticeable. I thought it was just a brown spot at first. Is that what the mark (MK) qualifier is for or is there something on the back?

There's a small stamp of the original owner and his address on the back. I doesn't detract from the card but rather give it some character. It was also the same owner of the 52 Mantle that I just bought but fortunatley wasn't stamped. Where's your 53 Mantle?

Pujols

Will he be in a new uniform next year ?

KenBoyerCollector 09-10-2011 07:28 AM

I sure hope not. It would be cool if he finished his career with St. Louis. Just like Musial

If he cares about his place in history even just a tiny bit, he will be.

But, he's welcome at Chavez Ravine, if he has any interest in working for a parking lot attendant and his ex-wife.

I'm not really a fan of the '53 Topps set. The art is good, but I just prefer actual pictures I guess. I got a decent deal on it so if I get bored with it I should be able to at least break even for a change.

Pretty slow month, but picked this up for the Lou Brock collection.

I'm not sure exactly what this is, it is about half the thickness of the regular 70 Supers, and has square corners.

Mark70Z 09-22-2011 12:32 AM

The Brock is a '70 Topps Super #11 proof card.

David W 09-22-2011 08:28 AM

I've got another square cornered 70 Brock, but it is normal thickness and has the back on it.

MBMiller25 09-22-2011 09:53 AM

Matthews

What a beautiful Matthews card you picked up. Congrats on a tough card.

I have been kind of on the sidelines as of late churning through my collection with a slight change of focus toward high end Post War HOF RC's. Although not a rookie card, the deal on this was to good for me to pass, up on a card I have wanted for quite a long time. Can't say that I am a very big Mantle collector, but really enjoy having this card in my collection.

Really happy about these additions...

1947 Bond Bread Jackie Robinson Leaping No Scoreboard (Total Pop 5 - Lowest Pop in the Bond Bread set - 1 of the Throwing cards is incorrectly listed as a Leaping No Scoreboard causing the discrepancy in the pop listings)

1955 Topps Doubleheader Jackie Robinson (scored this for $150 below VCP)

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/...e-Robinson.jpg

I now have 3 of the toughest 4 cards in the 1947 Bond Bread Jackie Robinson set (Glove In the Air, Batting No Sleeves, and Leaping No Scoreboard) - Hoping I can complete this set by the end of next year.
