I only have a handful of these great ballplayers and it's mostly of the Beast, but I would love to see what the board has to offer. So, pull out your Collins, Plank, Waddell, Baker, Joost, Bender, Meyers, Barry, McInnis, Grove, Cochrane, Foxx, Dykes, Simmons and so on. You get the gist... If they played for Mack, let's see them! And of course Mack himself.

I would love to, but everything I have on Rube is off-limits to public posting. There aren't too many genuine examples out there, that's for sure. Even the example in a well-known HOF autograph guide published in the early 1990's isn't authentic.
Sorry I can't help out with Waddell, but here's a copy of the only full-name version of Eddie Plank's signature that I've ever encountered. Notice how much less flamboyant this example is as compared to other versions. |

Again Jeff, really very sweet stuff.
And Leon is correct about the great pose of Mack. Wish I had the TYPE I. |
I was the underbidder the last two times the similar artwork of Plank came up for bids. Easily the best Plank item out there (as if there is a plethora of signed items to choose from!).

Do you have any idea who did these? Jeff i.e., Who is/was M. McGillin? |
No. You might want to check Hunt's completed auctions archive. I think these were once offered by Hunt. Perhaps there is more to be found in their descriptions. I think they said that the artist was a woman.

As a collector of Eddie Plank, who was born, scouted, lived & died locally in Gettysburg PA.
For my birthday (yesterday) my wife took me today to a new resturant in Gettysburg commemorating Eddie Plank, called "Gettysburg Eddies" Very cool place w/ a ton of photos of Eddies (no cards) Ironically it is Eddie Plank's birthday today. No one at the resturant knew that. I picked up some take out menu's, only have a few, so if anyone wants one let me know, 1st come 1st served http://www.qualitycards.com/pictures...burgeddies.jpg |
Oldtix - I sent you an email about the picture that you posted.
I don't get to post much on this board, but here is my contribution. A 1932 photo of Rube Walberg & Chief Bender. The paper caption reads - "They still have that old control. On the left is Rube Walberg, southpaw of the Mackmen, who yesterday broke 46 clays out of 50 in a shoot for baseball stars at Bustleton. At the side of the Nordic southpaw is Chief Bender, once a great money pitcher for the Athletics, who finished just one "bird" behind the paleface." Another aspect about this photo. At one point it appears as though someone cut the photo into two pieces, then put it back together for the newspaper photo. The cut line is to the right of Rube's head and goes all the way down his left arm, around Bender's gun barrel and follows Rube's leg & shoe to the bottom of the photo. I don't know much about these types of photos, but I found this kind of interesting. Jantz |

Still more (perhaps my favorite A's item...) This White Elephant Statue was given to attendees of a 1911 Banquet in conjuction the Athletics and the BBWAA. The ceremony was held to celebrate the Athletics World's Championship of 1911.
The White Elephant Statue is accompanied by an exceedingly rare original invitation to the event, addressed to a Mr. Malcolm McLean. The invitation is printed on thick cardboard stock, with a gorgeous White Elephant Gold Seal embossed at the top... |
Man oh Man Mark ! Talk about jaw-dropping pieces. Just fantastic, especially the lamp!
Thanks so much for posting. Best, Jimmy |
Boy, Mark, I have to agree with Jimmy...that's some incredible stuff! That 1911 Elephant is simply phenomenal.

Thanks so much, Jimmy and Rick... the lamp came from the National (in which I couldn't attend, and fortunately it did not sell...)
I must thank Carlton Hendricks for his coverage of the National... It was within his awesome photo spread that I noticed the lamp. Thanks also to Net54 "forum gurus" Mike and Ryan, who identified it as being in Bryan Dec's Booth. I am such a sucker for any of the early figural stuff, that I couldn't resist going after it. Here's a better close-up of the lamp's ornate Elephant Base... |

A ridiculous amount of wall space to devote to a signed ball, but I cant bring myself to dismantle it... |
Wonderful Foxx autograph, Mark. I LOVE that photo too - it would make a killer painting.
|
Yeah... the photo really makes the piece. He must have been a real "bad ass" in his day. Very handsome guy when dressed in street clothes, though. I think he would have had some great endorsements if he played today...
BTW, Graig... your "Beast Bangs Gomez" work of art is one of my very favorites! |
Thanks, Mark!! That was one of my oldest pieces on the site, so it makes me happy that people dig it.
I tell ya, he's a lot of fun to paint - he's got such a great look to him. At some point, I'll have to make an image of him hitting the homer off of Lefty Gomez at Yankee Stadium, the one that supposedly landed in the left field upper deck and broke a seat back. It's generally thought that he did so in 1937, though I have yet to research it. I think Lefty's quote about it was, "I don't know how far it went, but it took someone 45 minutes to go up there and retrieve the ball". Or something to that effect. |

Some great stuff here! I've always been impressed with Philadelphia Athletics collectors, who rank up there with Brooklyn Dodgers collectors in their passion and knowledge of the subject. Here's the coolest Philly A's piece that we've handled here at Heritage (in my opinion):
First is the 1910 Championship trophy awarded to Topsy Hartsel. Second is a 1913 celebratory dinner program signed on the back cover by the whole team, including the ultra-tough Eddie Plank. Here are the links: http://sports.ha.com/common/view_ite...o=19602&src=pr http://sports.ha.com/common/view_ite...o=19085&src=pr |
Now, THOSE ARE AWESOME. Great to see a legit Plank too, not like the CC Morales fake before. Amazing stuff.

My closest connection to Connie Mack & his Phil. A's--My cousin Moritz Herman ("Dutch" or "Morts") Flohr was signed off the Duke Unv. campus by Mr Mack in 1934 to pitch for the MackMen.
"Morts' had no known baseball cards from his 1 season in the big leagues, but I have 2 known PC's signed by him. I also have 2 index cards he signed for me in the late '80's, the last time I saw him before he died in 1994. If anyone has anything else of Mort I would love to see it! |

Even though I am an avid Phila A's collector, I have yet to get a Mack autographed item because I am holding out for a good 1929-31 team signed piece yet to be determined, but I do have this Mack souveneir bank. Also some of my A's programs featuring Mack.
