Would be nice if we make a monthly sticky post. With top 3 pickups of the year as part of the sticky. The Ty Cobb back and Mr. Plank would be #1 and 2...

Jeez, and its only March....

Thanks everyone. I am beyond excited. I have been after one of these for about a year now; I have been the underbidder on almost every Plank at auction since middle-2017 (always the bridesmaid...), and have been unsuccessful in a few private deals. But everything works out for the best, because, in my opinion, this Plank is a remarkable specimen and was worth the wait. Attached is a picture of the back. The stain up top is from a sticky hinge that used to hold the card to an album. IMO it does not detract from the back, and, really we are buying the Plank for the front/picture, right? I also like it because I know its history - it was owned by Brian Goldner for the past 28 years (JujuDrum on this forum) and Barry Halper before that. God willing, this card will not see another owner for many decades.

As an aside, I love that I can share this here -- my wife and friends either think I have a screw loose or they dont care....

Might as well just not post any new pickups and wait till April...going to be hard to top that. Congrats, that is my #1 favorite T206

That’s what we are here for! And that’s got to be one of the nicest Planks going. Really well done!

Jason Carota 03-23-2018 09:01 PM

Actually picked this up about ten years ago, but thanks to Joe G. I just found out it is a Gypsy Queen card and not an Old Judge, so it's like I just got this card in the mail today. Thus technically this post is not misplaced.

Picked this one up from the same Net54 member as the Coupon that I posted earlier this month.

Been a pretty long search but found a 1934 Gehrig #37 that I liked. Sneaky tough card.

joshuanip 03-25-2018 10:28 AM

Nice quad!

I agree the 34 Goudey is underrated

DeanH3 03-25-2018 10:30 AM

Sweet Lou. Tough card to find with nice eye appeal for sure.

I am a good judge of vintage cards, and those are nice looking examples of Ruth and Gehrig.

I am not a good judge of the thing shown in the middle...what in the fadoodle is that?

Brian

MattyC 03-25-2018 06:19 PM

Oh, that's a glove and bat made for me out of clay by one of my kids, with a very rough "To Daddy" written into it, LOL. I do realize now how funny/confusing that thing is there :p

I was taking a 3 month break for tax season, it lasted 3 weeks, lol. Going back on break.
There were so many great pick ups by every member that posted this month, I enjoyed looking at all of them. Great Job.
Here are a few I picked up.

Subset complete...D322 catchers

1 Attachment(s)
Finally added the last D322 Tip Top Bread catcher I needed to complete the run of catchers in the set.

Picked up my original George Gibson D322 in 2001, added Paddy O'Connor in 2012, and finally Mike Siimon today.

Thanks to David Levin!

This made it today and I have been dreading finding this card for 6 years, before I started the set. This is clearly the toughest card in the set, one hasn't sold at pubic auction since 2009 and I had a member take pity on me and sell it to me.

I also locked up a deal for the Johnson and wont have to chase the one on HA and will be down to one card left for the 796 set.

A big pickup by my modest standards. This is my "congratulations me for getting the big promotion!" card.

iowadoc77 03-29-2018 07:41 PM

Awesome Plank Steven! That set is really cool!

calvindog 03-29-2018 08:37 PM

Great Plank and great set. The PC 796s are some of the most interesting cards in existence.

These aren't really March pickups, but I finally did decent (composite) scans of them...

Very scarce 1957 Baseball Magazine posters of Johnny Antonelli, Jackie Jensen, Bob Lemon and Dean Stone. They measure 17.5 inches by 20 inches.

I'm still looking for :
Hank Bauer
Frank House
Al Kaline
Al Rosen
Bob Turley

I also have a spare of Antonelli, if anybody wants to trade...

Doug

rainier2004 03-30-2018 06:13 AM

Thanks Eric and Jeff. I love the images used on the 796s and always have starting with the Cobb/Wagner before the 1909 series. I always felt like it was the little sister set compared to NC but building that set is a whole different monster...getting closer to finishing.
