Here is my newest addition. It is a T-213 Type 2 Cobb Portrait. I'm sending it off for grading. A "4" would be nice, I guess?
I hope the image shows up! I'm new at this, so if the image is too large, let me know and I will "attempt" to figure out how to edit it. lol Thanks for looking! There's some really nice cards in here! Todd |
Todd- very nice Cobb! Congrats. The Coupons seem to be experiencing an increase in popularity lately.

Here's an 1890 NY Sporting Times Newspaper Supplement picturing the NY Giants Team w/Jesse Burkett. Has anyone ever seen another image of Burkett in a Giants uniform (he only played one season there in 1890)?

In Action PC...
Dan - One of the coolest PC's I have seen in some time. I love that in action shot ! Thanks for sharing.

Awesome photos, Dan and Phil.

LOVE that Indians postcard -- looks like it'd be mighty easy to get hit by a pitch with all that fringe hanging off
Managed to pick up a few T205s for my set this month... anyone think the Matty could pull a 20 out of SGC? |
Some amazing pickups this month. Congrats to everyone!
Today is Patriots' Day in MA, so I figured there would be no mail. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised to find this waiting for me when I got home: http://www.adamlarochecollector.com/..._carpenter.jpg |

Found this at the local card shop today. I usually can't afford Hall of Famers, but I "splurged" on this one. Not pretty, but for $10 I guess it isn't too bad.

Picked up this neat Tolstoi "label." I believe it to be from the top of a carton of tolstoi cigarette boxes but will know more when it arrives. As some may be aware, the cigarette boxes that housed our T206 and other cards were usually shipped in cartons of 10 or 20 packs. I have never seen or heard of a Tolstoi carton before, but this piece is the same "brand" as the T206 Tolstoi (see the pack below for reference) and seems to indicate Tolstois were shipped in cartons of 20 packs. Tolstoi didn't make it out of the 1910s so I would approximate this to the 1910-1915 era.

April pickups

From Lew Lipset's auction:
"An earlier wooden Exhibit Machine from the 1920’s. The rare machine is made of wood and is a double column table top. Displayed is a card from the “Draw Your Lucky Photo” pinup exhibit set (W423-4A). In excellent condition with full back." My other hobby is woodworking, and this machine, despite its advertised status as in "excellent condition,' can be made even better. I'll replace the present promo card with a few twenties Exhibits, refinish the whole thing, and repair the coin plungers to working order. |

2 more Big Heads

My recent "collector grade" 1916 Big Head pick ups leave me only needing Cobb and Ruth for completion. I was glad to get the Mays and Rice in a Collect.com auction recently. They were trimmed to the borders but who cares, they are strip cards. One of the wackiest looking sets out there, imo..regards
|
Great cards, Leon. Is Carl Mays pulling a Hughie-Jennings-like stomping fit? Or is he playing a tough game of "Simon Says"? What a funny card!

great looking cards!
i'm finding myself drawn to the various strips more and more. somehow they're captivating and provide some colorful variety to type collecting in the 20's era especially. best, barry |
I'm in trouble....vintage pickup #2:
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/f...NFT/McGraw.jpg my first HOFer :D I'm also watching a big card that ends tomorrow night. I'll be placing a high bid and hoping, but I probably won't win it with my luck. For whatever reason, not by design, a lot of the cards/players I'm interested in right now have ties to the Merkle boner game. I really want to pick up a card of each Tinkle, Evers, and Chance....possibly a low grade example of the T202 with Tinkle and Chance would be perfect. I love the look of the T202s. We'll see. |

Well, I think I will stick to just graded cards from now on. I am new to vintage and have the "untrained eye," but would also hope that collectors and/or auction houses (in this case) would disclose any information about the card in an honest effort, no?
My T-213 Type 2 Cobb (the one I posted several pages ago) will not receive a numerical grade by PSA because it is altered. I am extrememly disappointed. Like I said, I am new to vintage and could not detect anything with my "untrained eyes." I'm also upset with myself. As a new collector with a limited budget, this may have to be coughed up as a costly mistake, as I doubt the auction "company" will be able to help. Perhaps this is why some new collectors get turned off to the vintage hobby. An altered T206 Wagner - sure, I'll take one! (if I had the money -lol) But not a T-213 Cobb. Todd |
Todd
I would contact the auction house as soon as possible. F.L. |

Good luck! tbob P.S. I must admit I was pulling for you but the reverse image of the card shows what might be trimming at the very top border. Still a very, very nice card. |
