Beating a path down the collecting hole

2 Attachment(s)
This Matty. Like Pete, this was approximately $2.00 in 1981, and I picked it up, along with 4 other 1910 era Hall of Famers, at the first table of the first show I ever went too, and blew all 11 dollars I had to spend. They were my first vintage cards, all in lower condition (the others are T206 Walter Johnson pitching, T205 Zack Wheat Broadleaf...at that time it was just another back, T205 Roger Bresnahan, and E98 Cy Young). The Mathewson is the one in lowest condition, but it is the one that still catches my eye and the card that helped lead me down the collecting hole of appreciating the messed up but not destroyed beater.

Because of that he will always #1 (and the sizing of scans indicates the comparative importance of fronts in my collecting world, or perhaps my relative lack of scanning skills)

For many years, a lower grade version of this was the heart and soul of my collection:

Wasn't my first T206 (2nd or 3rd), but it was my first cool/big/expensive one. Bought this maybe 13ish years ago when I was 13-14 for $350, which felt like all the money in the world.

If one more person tells me to sign it, I will, but who’s going to authenticate my signature?

Great cards on this page, guys. Awesome, awesome stuff.

And yes, Frank, I also virtually sign the petition to sign the card!

OK, my most current favorite T206 is this McGraw / UZIT card. I acquired this card from an old-time collector who had purchased 20 tobacco cards
at the Willow Grove Show back in the late 1970's. Recently, he posted on my T206 Reference thread seeking information on this McGraw card.
I instantly contacted him. First, we reminisced about the old Willow Grove Show days. Then we got down to business. I informed him how valuable
his McGraw card was. He told me that several other guys had contacted him regarding this McGraw card. So, I told him to consider all his offers.
Subsequently, he got back to me and we made a really nice deal on all the cards in his collection.

This McGraw card is very unique (or as some here say "1 of 1"). In 40 years, only 4 subjects in the Exclusive 12 group (see scans below) have been
found with the UZIT back. Each of these T206 cards are unique with the UZIT back. Perhaps the remaining 8 subjects will eventually be discovered
with a UZIT back. Although, I'm not holding my breath for this discovery. This front/back combo is indeed extremely rare.

Outstanding card Bryan. Color me envious. :)

Here's my Walter J. from my PIEDMONT set. This card is everyone's favorite.

SGC graded it a 40 since it has an 1/8 of an inch spec of glue on its back.

The best story I have has been told before. (http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=147783)

Mr. Waddell was first owned by Nelson Tisdel, who stamped and signed the back of this card. It stayed in the Tisdel family and was passed on to his son. In the early '40s Tisdel's son had a trading partner who traded T206s. Mr. Waddell was traded to Gordon Soutter, who also signed the card. Mr. Soutter kept the card for 70 years, until a lady in Utah sold the card on eBay. I purchased the card on eBay and was curious enough to ask the seller if she knew who Gordon Soutter was. She was kind enough to reply "I know him well. He's my husband." She also provided the details of the trade that her husband made to obtain the card in his childhood.

Bingo. Provenance established. Tisdel to Tisdel to Souttar to Burke++.

This is the one I will keep in the family for another 70 years.:D

While I’ll never know who stamped this Chase card, I’ve managed to acquire 5 others similarly stamped...but the Chase was my first T206 and still my favorite (along with the Loving Cup version).

Just doesn't have the same ring to it as Tinker to Evers to Chance though!

Christy Mathewson is from Factoryville, Pa. From the late 50s to the late 60s I spent much of my summer vacations there staying with my Aunt Mary and Uncle Al. There isn't much in or around Factoryville. Mostly we sat on their front porch up on that hill and enjoyed the views of valleys and trees. At night my uncles and my Dad would go to the one bar in the area. They would take me and some of my cousins when we were teens and many intense bar shuffleboard games ensued. That's where I learned to appreciate pickled eggs from a jar and Hires root beer from a bottle.

My Uncle Al was probably the only other collector in my extended family. He had a few cards but mostly he collected baseball publications He loved books, guides and magazines. When he passed on some years ago my aunt sent me a box of his stuff. Nothing extraordinary but all of it priceless...to me.

I remember those summer days in the northeast Pennsylvania hills when I look at this card.

It’s raw and ragged but it was my first T206 purchased when I got a job and was making money. Might have cost $15 or $20.

Haven't had a chance yet to make scans of my own, so apologies for the camera glare on these pics...

The purple flower back stamp is documented here:
https://thegreatt206backstampproject...lower-star.php

Does anyone know its actual provenance? I can't seem to find that info anywhere.

njdunkin1 03-23-2018 06:31 PM

Wish I could contribute as to provenance, Dmitri, but a great Cobby regardless!!

Ryan--we need hi res scans of the Plank here once it comes in!

I think it's a 1 of 2. But I'm not sure I've ever seen the other one. Ted probably has it.

Did Chris Browne have one? I think he had a (near?) complete chase blue back run? I wish he’d post again.

I don't think Chris has/had the Broad Leaf.

I think this is the other one Jeff is talking about.
