As with many other national and international AH's they charge sales tax to more than just NY, so you may want to check to see how that affects you as well. Sometimes you will pay the sales tax either way.

Christies was going to charge right at $1,400 to ship but I was able to get the UPS Store on 82 Nassau Street in NYC to pick up, package and ship to me with $5k insurance for $312.05. Yes, I had to pay the $188 sales tax but after it's all said and done I still saved $900 using a third party shipper.

The UPS store # is 212-406-9010 if anyone wants to use them to ship.

For me Christie's shipping is $526.96 or the sales tax is $521.41.

I'm screwed either way.

last auction I had my niece who's attending college in NYC pick up for me and ship to CA. Didn't pay tax or the outrageous shipping charges. Hoping to do the same this time around.

Wouldn't there have been taxes?

1913 giants vs white sox

I was on an airline flight and missed the one lot that I wanted the most. If anybody here won the Giants vs White Sox and wants to make a quick dollar or two, please let me know, thanks

ajjohnsonsoxfan 08-24-2017 01:52 PM

I told them I was a CA resident and that I would be picking up the items. They sent me both a credit card auth form and another that allowed my niece to pick up the items. She shipped them to me at a fraction of a fraction of the price they wanted to charge. Btw I just looked at my shipping charge and they want $1471 this time around! insane

Scott- congrats, I was looking at that Nuf Ced piece in person, it's stunning.

AJ- congrats, as you the first person I've ever heard of to be able to have an item picked up and not pay tax.

Thanks to both of you! Very happy about the Nuf Ced cabinet - there was a corner chunk about 1" missing from the lower left (they sent a pic to me), but it displayed great and I certainly wanted to have it.

Mike - glad to hear you saw it in person and it looked very nice!

EJ - appreciate you not bidding any more against me (although would've appreciated it more a few bids earlier :)) Wasn't really sure how high I was going, so I'm glad I didn't have to test any limits.

I have a few other nice Nuf Ced items that are among my favorites in my collection, and these will go well together, so I can't imagine selling any time soon.....

Yeah I guess I could have got lucky last time around. I remember having to call them to work it out. It makes sense though that if I don't have to pay tax if they ship, why should I have to pay tax if I have someone else do the shipping? If a non NY resident picks up the items in person to ship why would they have to pay tax? Anyway will try it again this time around and see what happens. It's $721 in taxes and $1400 for shipping. yikes.

After getting blown out of the water for a couple other items, I fell in love with both of these Old Timers' Game panorama's. So many great players together from different eras including Cobb, Speaker, Young, Bresnahan, Hooper, Baker, Collins! Are you kidding me?! Plus both are framed which is about $1000-$1500 each. Can't wait to hang em up!

Also won these Ruth photos. I plan on keeping the spring training photos but selling the rest. Let me know if anyone is interested.

From my invoice from the auction...
"If a buyer takes delivery in any of the following states, Christie's must collect any applicable state or local sales or use tax before property is shipped: New York, Florida, Texas, California, Illinois and Rhode Island."

On a separate note, I don't collect pictures, but those Ruth shots are amazing!

I might have to do that too. They want to charge me over $1300 for shipping, $185 for insurance and $1600 for sales tax. That is crazy. I can ship my car overseas for cheaper than the shipping. Do you have a contact at that UPS location?

Kevin,

I dealt with Kershelle at the UPS store. Unfortunately, with your situation it would be cheaper for them to ship to you directly and save the $115 not paying sales tax.

I completely understand the high shipping cost when dealing with priceless pieces of art but to charge $147 which doesn't even include insurance to ship a 1911 Chicago Cubs season pass which is the size of a credit card is crazy. It could be shipped in the most protective way possible and sent overnight with insurance for a 1/4 of the price they were charging me.

Its such a racket! When I talked to them they couldn't give me a answer why shipping is so high. hahaha.. Im more inclined to paying the higher amount in NY taxes to go to the state over giving this auction house any more of my money. Now we are getting into a principle matter for me haha

JeremyW 08-24-2017 06:34 PM

I was thrilled add this postcard size snapshot of Matty during Spring Training in Texas!

Attachment 285388

I also added to my Bender collection with this photo from one of the Paul Thompson lots. The one on the left is the Christies image, the one on the right the Lelands image of the exact same photo from a decade ago. I noticed this image quality discrepancy on the other photos in my lot and in several other lots. As a buyer I didn't mind so much as it might have suppressed the bids of others, but as a the consignor I would not be so thrilled!

Attachment 285389 Attachment 285390

I bought my Thompson lot for the Bender, so if anyone is interested in the Chance, Marquard, Vance or Cicotte from that lot PM with your interest.

Congrats Jeremy! After a couple close misses on previous Wolverine team cabinets you have scored. That team picture actually dates to 1888 (based on the players and uniform style). This is an imperial cabinet that originally measured 16"x20" but has been cut down. The Studio (Tomlinson) and all the player names would have been at bottom. I shared this with Christies for the sake of accuracy (wasn't and didn't bid) but they didn't change the listing. I studied that cabinet in person when Hunt auctioned off the Deacon White items in 2006 and can say that you will be impressed with the clarity of the image, typical of Tomlinson Studio.

The Deacon White picture is also cool. I had interest but already have a couple large format portraits of White (perhaps a touch of hoarding guilty).

You have added a couple great pieces for a reasonable price.

I imagine mot of the people here who bought have had their eyes on the auction since it was listed, since there were some pretty amazing pieces in it. That said, I know that I took a second look based on realizing that some lots were listed pretty poorly and only decided to bid in the last few hours.

Thanks AJ. Was happy to win the Vic Mills as I have the postcard to make a great companion piece with. I was under bidder in the Spinners Cabinet and thought that was a great item as well! And congrats on great pickups!

Craig, I noticed both Jackson items being relisted as well and when I spoke to a rep at Christies they said a bidder reneged on those items. This is why I question a week ago about how Christies determines what kind of budget to allow bidders.

Ben, love the La Azura Photo and let me know when you are done with it! Thank you for sharing where that image came from because I knew it look familiar and couldn't think where I've seen it before. Now I know.

I'm curious who I got in a bidding war with over the 1910 Cobb in Cuba postcard? I'm glad to see other "crazed bidders" out there like me.

I don't think you could go wrong with any lot from that auction as many of those items belong in a museum.

ajjohnsonsoxfan 08-24-2017 09:11 PM

Jay it was you and I toe to toe on the Vic Mills. Glad you got it. I was sweating a little and couldn't pull the trigger one more time.

David I was also in on that Speaker photo and was going to add it to the one I got during last auction. If you ever want to part with it let me know!

I also loved the stand alone Cobb photo with the amazing clarity. Think it went for $3k? It was sweet! Anyone here win it?

Al C.risafulli 08-24-2017 11:07 PM

Nice job, AJ. The 1930 panoramic photo was taken at an Old Timer's Day sponsored by the Boston Post. Proceeds benefited the Children's Hospital of Boston and also went toward a pension fund that Ban Johnson tried to establish, and it celebrated the 1903 Red Sox team.

A few auctions ago I sold a large-format autographed piece that was presented to Lou Criger (who was ill and couldn't make the game), along with another copy of this photo. I believe that the photos were made for the players and other people associated with the game. The consignor of this collection also had a bat from the game that sold in the last auction - it was an Eddie Collins bat that was signed by something like 51 people from the game. The bat was used by JIMMY Collins to get the game's first hit. Once I saw this poster I wondered if perhaps it was the copy given to Eddie or Jimmy.

In any event, great pickup; I was an underbidder!

-Al

ajjohnsonsoxfan 08-25-2017 12:22 AM

Al thanks for this additional info! I remember the Lou Criger piece wishing I could own something a fraction as historic. Having this history is what makes these items so special!

reneged? with all that goes on,you unfortunately have to wonder if they were shills that accidentally won. Christie's and Sotheby's, even though they're the most famous, don't exactly have squeaky clean histories either. There's an American Greed about them too.

From what I understand all of these items came from the same consigner and many sold really, really cheap (a lot less than they would have been purchased for based on previous sales of the same item). I wouldnt think it makes sense to look in that direction for shilling. Unless it was someone who wanted to manipulate the market?

Thank you, congrats on your pickup as well. There were lots of bargains to be had. I picked up 3 items not described as card images(kind of an important thing to miss in the current market). This Cobb is a monster IMO.

Also, Christies gave no guarantee on time periods or the way in which the photos were developed(everything sold as is) so I believe that potentially hurt some of the pieces. I know for sure that they had issues with the last auction(things not original including a 1917 white sox photo/example). I wonder if some reneged items actually means "not what I thought it was". 4 and 5 figures was just too much for me(for example) to risk.

I think just like the last auction, you will have very very happy people and some that are disappointed once they receive their items. I took the conservative approach with guaranteed happiness. :) I know the scans(as said earlier) were not very good so I expect everything I get to look better in person.

There are a lot Net54 guys that bought in Christies for good reason. Photos have been promoted here for a long time by long time collectors and dealers so there is a good pool here. There are not a lot of other places to talk photos in depth in large numbers. I am happy to see so many great items go to members. Again... that Joe Wood though..damn... If it didn't go to such a good home I would be very disappointed. :) Great stuff everyone(as stated above-you can't go wrong with this stuff posted).

They should take a look at the currency holders. Smaller, thinner holders that have a little flex in them. I love the rating system that RHY does on their listings and now they include a certificate to go along with the photo.

Bueller name should be replaced with HENRY YEE

On a separate note, I don't collect pictures, but those Ruth shots are amazing!

Just got off with rep at Christie's. She informed me that the laws of NY changed in last couple months forcing them to collect tax on anything picked up at their NY office, even by a 3rd party shipper. She also stated their shipping rates were high because they build "custom crates" to deliver the merchandise. So basically if you live in a state where they don't have a presence like Nevada you're held hostage to their outrage shipping fees unless you want to have it picked up or shipped by a 3rd party and then pay the taxes. This needs to be looked at by a lawyer because it doesn't seem right.
