George, you're right. I'm almost more into the display pieces now than the cards they really are great. It's a slippery slope for sure.

Not cards but...

tbob 05-19-2013 03:50 PM

Trying to balance the Chicago Nest Egg with the REA auction was difficult. I lost out on the M116 McConnell White Sox variation which is a truly rare card. In the hobby we use the term "rare" too often for cards which are tough or scarce but the Amby Sox is rare.
I also wasn't able to secure the D311 near set which may have been a blessing because I just need a handful to complete it and the thought of flipping that many cards was mind-boggling.
With that note, and I know this is a long shot, if the guy who won that lot reads this Board and happens to be amenable to selling some of the cards he doesn't need, please let me know. Brian McQueen is also interested in a handful also.

I also meant to mention the lot of 45 Series 8 T210 cards which sold last night. I would be interested in buying several of those if the owner is interested in recouping some of his investment.

You can message me through 54 "tbob" or email me. Thanks,
Bob

Got blown away on all the key baseball books (Sphere and Ash, Scientific Baseball, Sol White, etc, and all the signed copies) but did manage to finally pick up Tuohey, 2 Peverellys and some good old staples. I only need the Peverelly, so if anyone is interested in the others, let me know

Rare Back T206's have become so STRANGE??!!!! How does one explain red hindu wajo sgc 55 selling for a fraction of what lesser grade commons have sold for?!?!

in the current issue of SMR david hall of collectors universe has a full page advertisement buying rarer backs of T206. i personally think it is ridiculous, but the speculators will speculate.

ullmandds 05-19-2013 08:35 PM

and lots 449 and 453...2 34 goudey lajoies...the vg-ex sells for less than the authentic?!?!

It just goes to show that the rare back craze is just a massive bubble created by 2-3 collectors... as soon as one doesn't show up for a card, the price is reasonable again (cheap, even).

ullmandds 05-19-2013 08:49 PM

"A bubble...yes...a BUBBLE!"

insidethewrapper 05-19-2013 08:51 PM

It will be interesting to see if this card ( 33Goudey Lajoie) gets sent in again to be graded and gets a numerical grade. It may depend on who sends it in ? Could be a large profit for someone !!!

ullmandds 05-19-2013 08:54 PM

Hmmm...if REA tells me that "PSA" says it's trimmed...I'd bet it's trimmed!!!!

RCMcKenzie 05-19-2013 08:55 PM

It takes 3 rabid collectors

I lose money all the time when I go to sell, because I collect obscure cards that not many people want to pay big money for. When I go to sell, I was already willing to pay the most anyone would pay in order to win.

So, the market on thinly traded cards is really set by the second underbidder, because when I sell I can't be there to anchor the final leg to drive the price to where I thought it was worth previously.

That T207 RC was a great card, just maybe out of the price range of many collectors, myself included.

insidethewrapper 05-19-2013 09:03 PM

Why is this ? Some cards I send in to be graded have come back " evidence of trimming" and they are not graded at all, and others are graded " Authentic " when they show evidence of trimming.

Perhaps a case of collectors truly buying the card, not the grade, although this would be an extreme case, no doubt.

On a smaller scale, this PSA 4.5 Turkey Red Cobb sold for a bit more than this PSA 5 example. Both nice cards for the grade, but the PSA 4.5 looked a little cleaner and sharper (ie. collectors buying the card).

We've seen some interesting results in this auction. I guess you're going to see some anomalies when you have old men spending large amounts of green on pictures of dead men on cardboard. And it's 4:43 am on the East coast. :)

ullmandds 05-19-2013 09:06 PM

you need to tell them you want it entombed if authentic.

btcarfagno 05-19-2013 09:26 PM

Ended up the underbidder on the Comiskey scrapbook. That one still hurts. Was able to show some restraint but still...son of a...

I have to say this rant at least once every year: I hate how you can only bid in huge increments with the REA auction. I often want to bid more, but not $120 more more, which is usually the minimum. I think this does a disservice to sellers and buyers.

Congrats to Rob and the winners.

Was fun to watch all those bids coming in right until the end, 10+ every minute.

If anyone on here won the blank back ghosts (290) or the lot of 107 T206s with handcut examples (248) I'm very interested in a few cards.

Chris, it was really fun chatting throughout the auction. Sorry you didn't win, but I hope you end up with one of those weird-backed ghosts. And if not, then you have more to spend in the next Goodwin auction. Good luck. :)

Jaime, great pick-up.When we were chatting you mentioned that you were only going for one card. I should have asked which one so that I could follow along, but I was too wrapped up with my own bidding. I'm glad to see you got this one. :)

Leon, I had a great time hanging out in the chatroom last night. Let's do this again some time. Congratulations on the Gabby Street Pirate back.
And thanks for not bidding on the Merkle, at least not more than once. :D

cyseymour 05-20-2013 05:53 AM

The Merkle Pirate back is awesome. Great looking card.

Great items all, Brian congrats that lot was really cool. Ken that PC is amazing.

Got some of the cards I was after and added some really neat display pieces. I also grabbed the B-18 blanket so when they turn my heat off this year from spending too much money I can stay warm. :)

John, congratulations on all this stuff. That Johnson/ Red Hindu was the card that I would have gone for if I didn't absolutely require that Merkle. And also thanks for taking the Lord and not the Merkle.
I will email you shortly. :)

AMBST95 05-20-2013 06:06 AM

Congratulations to all of those who won.

Oh yeah, I want to add "F@CK YEAH", to quote Tim Lincecum. :D

I got my card!!!! :):):):)

I will post scan when it arrives, probably in July.

I like my steaks and cards...rare!

1880nonsports 05-21-2013 05:52 PM

great leather pillowtop. I owned one in a white leather years back. They rarely come up for sale. Ewing and mascot - sigh - been on my list so long as well as the "long and short of it". Love the card and quite nice clarity for the issue. Not as active in base ball as I used to be (still chase this and that) but it's nice to visit here as it's quite lively - and I continue to learn quite a bit. The occasional theater not bad either :-) Kinda slow on the non-sport front...........

ValKehl 05-21-2013 10:44 PM

My only REA win is this N403 Yum Yum Tobacco card of Tom Deasley of the Washington Nationals for my type collection: http://bid.robertedwardauctions.com/...x?itemid=24571 Where possible, I try to obtain Washington players for my type cards. Now, I will look to sell or trade my other N403 Yum Yum example, Danny Richardson of the N. Y. Giants.

Great card, Val. I had that card on my bidder card and was going to run it up if I got outbid on the A's team card, but it never happened.

My pickup

ValKehl 05-22-2013 07:14 PM

Blair and RC, many thanks for the kind words re my pickup. IMO, it is a very nice looking Yum Yum for the technical grade.

RC, I'm SO GLAD you won the A's team card! :) FYI, my limit was $2K (plus the BP).

If whomever won the near set of W503 cards (lot #390) does not intend to keep the terrible-condition WaJo card, I'll be glad to take it off your hands!
