I must thank Carlton Hendricks for his coverage of the National... It was within his awesome photo spread that I noticed the lamp. Thanks also to Net54 "forum gurus" Mike and Ryan, who identified it as being in Bryan Dec's Booth.

I am such a sucker for any of the early figural stuff, that I couldn't resist going after it. Here's a better close-up of the lamp's ornate Elephant Base...

Here are souvenir mini-bats from the 1930 and 1931 World Series (plus a bonus 1932 bat signed by Joe Sewell), a diecut souvenir scorekeeper put out by the Cleveland paper for the 1929 Series, and a ticket for the A's 4-3 victory over the Tigers on June 7, 1911.

Yeah... the photo really makes the piece. He must have been a real "bad ass" in his day. Very handsome guy when dressed in street clothes, though. I think he would have had some great endorsements if he played today...

Thanks, Mark!! That was one of my oldest pieces on the site, so it makes me happy that people dig it.

I tell ya, he's a lot of fun to paint - he's got such a great look to him. At some point, I'll have to make an image of him hitting the homer off of Lefty Gomez at Yankee Stadium, the one that supposedly landed in the left field upper deck and broke a seat back. It's generally thought that he did so in 1937, though I have yet to research it.

I think Lefty's quote about it was, "I don't know how far it went, but it took someone 45 minutes to go up there and retrieve the ball". Or something to that effect.

The 1931 World Series was a rematch of the '30 Fall Classic. But this time the Gashouse Gang turned the tables on the Mackmen beating the A's in seven games. This section of Shibe Park happened to be across the street!

Some great stuff here! I've always been impressed with Philadelphia Athletics collectors, who rank up there with Brooklyn Dodgers collectors in their passion and knowledge of the subject. Here's the coolest Philly A's piece that we've handled here at Heritage (in my opinion):

First is the 1910 Championship trophy awarded to Topsy Hartsel. Second is a 1913 celebratory dinner program signed on the back cover by the whole team, including the ultra-tough Eddie Plank. Here are the links:

My closest connection to Connie Mack & his Phil. A's--My cousin Moritz Herman ("Dutch" or "Morts") Flohr was signed off the Duke Unv. campus by Mr Mack in 1934 to pitch for the MackMen.

"Morts' had no known baseball cards from his 1 season in the big leagues, but I have 2 known PC's signed by him.



I also have 2 index cards he signed for me in the late '80's, the last time I saw him before he died in 1994.

If anyone has anything else of Mort I would love to see it!

Connie Mack did a lot for baseball of all ages.

Probably a one of a kind mock up for the 1903 W601. This is an actual photograph of the piece, not a paper printed item, on the back in fountain pen is 1902 A's and each player and position listed. All that is missing from the W601 is the center ring text. It measures approx 8 1/2" x 11"

Connie Mack Statue- Harry Rosin Prototype
 

Here's one of my best pickups for 2009. It is the prototype for the "Mr. Baseball" Statue from the renowned/deceased artist, Harry Rosin. The "finished product" sits outside Citizens Bank Park, and was moved there from the old Veterans Stadium (and Connie Mack Stadium prior to that). See Internet blurbs below...

This is considered Rosin's greatest work, and this smaller prototype Statue is pretty captivating. I was lucky to get (from ebay of all places) and think a lot of other collectors must have simply missed it...

This Philly pennant is part of an American League set...probably c. 1950? Pennants measure about 11 1/2" long (excluding streamers)...

1910 A's Pennant
 

44 long vertical pennant with applied lettering and elephant mascot along with all three blue tassels. Has a few tiny moth holes otherwise very clean. I'm told these pennants were believed to have been given to the players after their World Series triumph in 1910.

I agree with Jimmy... that's a holy grail piece! Just a beautiful, majestic and historic pennant. Can you share how you acquired it? I believe Mastro had one about a decade ago, and that's the only one I've ever seen. It was even accompanied by a photo of an early automobile with people aboard, celebrating the A's Win, with this identical pennant draped for all to see (if I'm remembering correctly).

It is one of my favoite pieces. I got it at Hunt's auction about 7 or 8 years ago. I'd love to see that picture.

An unreal companion piece to your magnificent pennant. I found it in the Halper Catalogue (Lot 1838).

Not only is your style of pennant pictured in this photo, but Connie Mack and Eddie Plank are in the Car (among others...) Another intriguing aspect of this photo is the Oakland Pennant also visible in the photo. A look into the future, perhaps??

I don't have my Halper catalogue handy at the moment for a higher res look - but it looks like the somewhat rotated out of line H in Jack's pennant is very simlar to the one in the old photo.

In honor of spring training...

Jimmy - That A's coffee mug was a real nice pickup. I was watching it and hoped a collector would recognize its rarity and value. Great odd ball souvenir. Heck, I would have to resist the urge to drink an occasional cup of coffee out of it. This metal liscense plate is from the same era.

That's a great catch on the "H" being tilted to the same side, and differing in relation to the other vertical letters. Since these letters were embroidered on (and not screened/painted) this would certainly increase the chances of it being the same pennant. If the graphics were screened instead, the letter H would be like that on all of them....

Pretty chilling to think it could conceivably be the same one pictured, nearly 100 years later. Of course the year on the Pennant pre-dates the photo (dated 1913), but it's very possible that the pennant was simply retained for a couple of years. That could also explain why the 1910 year portion of the pennant is folded under, and out of view inside the car :rolleyes:

That Eddie Collins signed Cover is a killer piece. Perfect bold example... I love his autograph. Great HOF collection as well... the Rabbit Maranville Signed Playball Card is another beauty that really caught my eye. And the McKechnie Cover too... Great stuff!
