I just picked up a 1935 Southern Association Championship ring. I don't know much about it except that it is a wife's ring I think and it's 10K gold with one diamond. Does anyone have information on this ring?

Scooter- great vintage Boston stubs (T206 era, cool!)...I have one circa 1903/4, framed with a Highlander's stub, same circa.

1947 Dodgers

1 Attachment(s)
Been tracking this one for a while and finally made arrangements to acquire it. Obviously not a Jackie Robinson jersey, but thrilled to have it none the less. Brooklyn Dodger jerseys from 1947 are pretty tough to find, of any player and or condition. For this one, I have period MacGregor-Goldsmith road buttons to restore it. I suspect there could be jerseys I have missed, but I also suspect not too many, but over the years, this is what I am tracking with respect to 1947 Dodgers jerseys as being offered:

ROADHowie Schultz; MacGregor-Goldsmith (this jersey)
Hank Behrman; MacGregor-Goldsmith

HOME
Eddie Stanky; Rawlings (have this jersey)
Bruce Edwards; Rawlings
Clyde King; Rawlings
Gil Hodges; Spalding

I also own a 1946 Brooklyn Dodgers home satin that could well have been carried over for use and wear in 1947. They did not wear road satins in 1947 as the last year for the road satins appears to be 1945.
So for me, I now have a more complete picture and physical representation of a very special intersection of time, events, and fabric.

Really cool Dodgers uniform Dave. Congrats!

Here's a recent pick up for me. It's a 1967 Cubs scorecard from the 9/1-9/3 series against the Mets. I don't usually collect autographs but as a Mets fan I liked the combination of players who signed. Some had just gotten called up to the majors and a couple HOFers: Danny Frisella, Joe Moock, Cal Koonce, Bud Harrelson, Tommie Reynolds, Bob Johnson, Billy Connors, Greg Goosen and HOFers Ralph Kiner and Nolan Ryan.

Also interesting to me is that Ryan is on there but yet didn't pitch in the majors that year. He pitched a little in the minors and then didn't pitch the rest of the year. I assume he was traveling with the major league team but not an official September call up? Research has proved fruitless but maybe I can meet Nolan one day and ask. Thanks for looking.

Great pin! What, exactly, are "Sporties"? Cereal?

matty39 02-16-2017 09:22 AM

sporties

According to an old baseball catalog "sporties", issued in 1934 were "widely accepted as a bakery product."

The Steeple!! Is this jersey huge?

Dave Grob 02-16-2017 04:58 PM

Brooklyn Dodger Jersey

Ken,

It's a size 44, which is at the upper range for typical jerseys of the period. I am sure it's much lighter than the basketball uniforms Schultz wore..

These have been coming in over the past couple of days, so I thought I would post as a group:

Top Left: Reds home scorecard. Much tougher to find that the World Series Programs. Both this scorecard and the full illustrated program were priced at .25 cents. I suspect they sold a lot less of these considering what you could get for the same money.

Top Right: World Series menu from the Netherland Plaza. Only the second one of these I have seen. The Netherland Plaza hosted the Tigers and other major league and media personnel. Interesting in that Ernie Lombardi is identified as Morris Arnovich.

Bottom Left: Bus pass for the final game of the season at Crosley Field. This was win #100 for the ball club. First time they hit that mark. Something they would not do again until 1970.

Bottom Right: Mailing envelop for 1940 World Series tickets. This one is post marked 15 September.

I finally found something at an antique store! Typically I just drag my kids around and end up buying stuff for them. I can't remember the last time I bought anything.

I am a Giants fan who lives in the Houston area. Found this Bruce Bochy player issued bat from his Astros days (when he was #13, not #15). The price was very reasonable. I passed on Denny Walling and Joe Sambito bats, but the Bochy seemed like a major score... future HOF (probably).

That's the best Edd Roush autograph I've ever seen. Such a beautiful early example, and the fountain pen is so much more elegant than his more recent felt tip sigs.

Great combo, Chris!

Vandy's 1st no-hitter

6 Attachment(s)
Well, I'm very happy to have finally filled an obvious void in my Vandy collection.

Several years ago I read the Cincinnati Post follow up from the day after Johnny Vander Meer's 1st no-hitter against the Boston Braves on 6/11/38 at Cincinnati. While reading this recount, I discovered a factoid that I stored in my memory bank hoping to one day capitalize on it. Last night it finally showed up on eBay.

Most all recounts of this game have the paid attendance for the game at a miserly 5,814. However, Cincinnati Post newspaper coverage mentioned something that I thought was cool:
“The 10,311 (5,814 paid) Knothole Day fans roared their approval of the first no-hitter since 1919 when Hod Eller flipped one against the Cardinals.”

Last night, I found 11 year old Reds fan Wilson Neeley's 1938 Knothole Club Membership Card which will get added to the Vandy showcase. Mission accomplished!

Knothole Club members were allowed admission into 11 games in 1938 including the Saturday game played on June 11th where Vandy no-hit the Braves.

Scott,

Striking and comprehensive display. I have this persons Knothole Club cards from 1936,1939-1940, so now I know what happened to 1937-1938. :)

Great pickup, Scott. It never ceases to amaze me how you manage to fill every hole in your Vandy collection!

Shoeless Moe 02-23-2017 08:22 AM

Scott, just curious have you ever had any contact with any relatives of him? If I were a grandkid (if he had any) I'd know I'd love to see your collection in person.

Vandy's 1st no-hitter

Thanks to all of you that weighed in!
I had hoped that I would eventually find one of these.
I'm thrilled that I finally found one.
Rob, it's literally like finding a needle in a haystack.
Sometimes it's easier to find the needle if you know it exists. :D

Paul,
That's a good question. Unfortunately the Vander Meer family is down to one surviving direct descendent, I believe- a granddaughter.
Tragedy seemed to follow his immediate family, with several untimely deaths.

Finally was able to get a Hack Wilson gamer. I did some research online and found out that this bat was found at antique store and bought for $50 (wish I would have gotten it for that). The cool bit is that before it was restored, it had a lot of tape/residue around the handle, which was a key characteristic for Hack. The ordering indicates it would fall in the 1929-1930 period, 1930 being when Hack collected the current record of 191 RBI's.

1942 St. Louis Cardinals

1 Attachment(s)
Each year I try to curate a couple of additional small topical displays at the MEARS Museum. 2017 is the 75th Anniversary of the 1942 St. Louis Cardinals World Champion team so that will be one of the smaller displays tied to this year. These are the first two of a number of items that have shown up in recent days that will be a part of that exhibit. The telegram has an obvious connection, but the sheet music for “Pass the Biscuits, Mirandy" probably only resonates with die hard Cardinal history buffs. I also have the 78rpm record of this song coming as well.
