Great story, thanks for sharing.

So, I pulled a large format box out of storage and took pictures of a few oversized Clemente collectibles.

First up is a Laughlin giant stand up - My understanding is Bob Laughlin used to set up at shows and offer these for sale. I guess either he made a very limited number or they didn't go over so well as they are pretty tough to come by.

Next is a 1966 Harmony Milk Pirates place mat - not for everyone, but a super rare item nonetheless

Next is.... well I'm not sure exactly what it is - I believe it to be hand painted and I loved it when I saw it. I believe I saw 1 other similar one somewhere.

Last for this post is the same image from the 1973 Allied Printing memorial postcard - except this one is about 8 1/2 x11 and blank backed - cardboard stock. Never seen it before or again.

The ticket stub I have posted in this thread earlier. The Program I just won from the Hunt auction. In the lower right corner of the program you can see that this program was personalized "To Vera" from Pirates team doctor Joseph Finegold. The program in its own right is near impossible to find. When I hold it, I imagine each of the players signing it for Vera and what a bittersweet day/game it must have been. So happy to have won it.

1971 Houston BBWA dinner program. Interestingly, the only autographed items I have are because of my desire for the item the autograph is on. I think I own less than half a dozen autographed items. This is one of them. This program once again is near impossible to find. Kind of enjoy the fact that it has multiple autographs including Clemente.

1973 Post Gazette - Pittsburgh Pirates Album set - including Clemente as originally issued.

Last up is something a bit outside the scope of most of my collection as it has no picture of Clemente on it, just the words "Adios Amigo Roberto". It is about 9x12 and the photo is mounted on heavy stock cardboard. It just evokes a bit of sadness when I look at it. I do not know its origin.

I have always liked the Allied Printing postcard. This and the 1972 Pro Star Promotions are two of my favorite oddball Clemente items; and on both, Howard, you have an amazing rarer variation !

Thanks so much for posting the Houston BBWA program; I’ve never seen this one before so I can now add it to the list of items that are out there.

I especially appreciate that the Bazookas bothered to utilize different pics, unlike say the Exhibits or many of the team issue/pack items year after year that often seem to just recycle the same base photo.

Next up Alcoa Aluminum bats ad. Not sure where it is from - anyone?

This Black and white item is on thick cardboard and about 11x14 - believe it is very similar in design to a much more common color one that was sold/given out in Corvette department stores.

September 29, 1955 - El Mundo - Spanish language newspaper with Clemente on the cover!!

Next up 3 magazines from PR

Original art by Medina from 1973

Very cool! Were both series a and b issued in one set like that or were they issued sperately? I have the blue and pink checklists and just recently picked up the blue card that is on top of the sealed pack. I'm just curious if the blue and pink checklists are included in that sealed pack.

As a long-time Clemente collector I am really enjoying this thread. I worked on the PSA registry for many years but have since divested most toward building my HOF collection.

I do have two fairly unique (IMO) items to share: a 1970 team issue uncut sheet and a modern Topps reprints uncut sheet . . .

Scott,

I think I won something from you not too long ago, I'll post it later.

Mike,

The 4x6ish color team issues are a bit confusing from 1966-1972. I still haven't figured them all out!! While some of them were issued in two series (A and B), the one posted, to the best of my knowledge was not. It is an off white/beige border rather than white like most of the others. PSA calls it a 1971 - I am not sure if the little research I've done on these corroborates that or not - for now going under the assumption PSA is correct.

Awesome Hostos magazine - never seen another.

Welcome Scott - sad to see your master set go.

A little more eye candy for all - will not let PSA touch these as they will have to fold (translate as damage) a flap to fit into their holders!! The 1962 box in my master set is the SUPER RARE 20 piece box that fits without folding into PSA's holder - Registration is horribly off, but only 1962, 20 piece box I have ever seen. Will post eventually. Enjoy.

Howard

Nice Bazooka boxes Howard!

How come I’ve read that the 1971 Bazooka no number is tougher than the numbered version, but I always see the unnumbered version? Was that erroneous information?

That I am aware of there is no such thing as a numbered complete box. I have seen a number (pun intended) of no number 1971 boxes. The 1971 Bazooka numbered was a test of some sort and definitely issued in smaller quantities than the numbered version. I have owned/seen panels and singles of the numbered version.

The Bazookas I own are one of my pride and joy's! Many do not know that there are 2 different size boxes for most years - a 25 piece box (like those shown and a 20 piece box - will eventually post a scan). Interestingly in my experience different years prove more elusive in different sizes - 1962 for example - the 25 piece box while far from easy to find is obtainable (with patience and money) - on the other hand - as mentioned in my last post - I own the only 20 piece box I have ever seen with Clemente. 1968 and 1971 were only issued as 25 piece boxes (that I am aware of). A 1960 complete box is my white whale! Combing some of the biggest collections ever sold (Copeland, Halper and others), Speaking to dealers and collectors across the country - I have yet to even see proof that one exists - I have boxes with other players from 1960 - so I pray one day............I can complete my Bazooka complete box run with a 1960 Clemente complete box.

Empty77 05-29-2018 10:10 PM

you weren't kidding, excellent looking boxes Howard.

I would have to see that to believe it. I owned an uncut sheet as well as a panel set that I believe originated from Woody Gelman. Interestingly and perhaps related to your post - The Mays on the uncut sheet is printed as part of the box proof - making it theoretically possible to cut it out in a way that would allow you to assemble a box from it. That said, the time it would take and the needed precision of multiple cuts and folds I submit would be prohibitively time consuming.......so, that said - do you have pictures?

quitcrab 06-01-2018 06:06 PM

You are correct Howard...it came from the bazooka sheet. I don't have a picture but I have seen the Mays box in it's 3d state. I think it was made by Topps back in 71, not someone cutting by hand from the sheet. I may be wrong but Bob may own it.

I am 99.9% sure that Roberto is at the far right of the photo. I did do a little research in the past and the only other player this could have been is Earl Francis. But based on the body posture, I think it's Clemente.

I think You may be right Mike. That’s a great photo, but the first time I read your post, I read it as Clemente and Mazeroski receiving “old” gloves, lol.

I used to see quite a few numbered singles that were clearly hand cut and unfortunately very sloppily. I have never seen a complete assembled box flattened or otherwise. I do believe all panels originated from and were cut from sheets.

Day 156

This next item is one I was burned on in my earlier days collecting Roberto. I purchased it off eBay in the mid 90s, framed it myself, and had it in my collection for a few years before I realized the signature was no good. One day I was looking at some of my Clemente items and noticed that the facsimile signature on the 1971 Arco photo matched the signature on my signed piece. I kept it as a reminder to be more careful when purchasing RC signatures. Over the past 20-plus years, I feel as though I have become much more competent in determining authentic signatures.
