Experts at Legendary Auctions expect collectors to be extremely interested in owning a piece of The Bill Mastro Collection, for a number of reasons. “First of all, everyone recognizes the fact that Bill Mastro has been a major force in the hobby for decades, and it’s universally acknowledged that his contributions have been significant,” said Doug Allen, president, Legendary Auctions. Beyond that Allen said, Mastro was always first and foremost a collector, and what he loved to collect was perfection. “Quality items in pristine condition always attract considerable attention at auction,” said Allen. “Bill’s collection has always been one of the most meticulous in terms of condition and attention to detail. Collectors will pay a premium for items in exemplary grades of preservation such as this. The collection’s across-the-board, unparalleled quality truly makes every item one-of-a-kind.”
Most folks also know that there are rogue scripts written, to register more non-existent users, to plague these types of boards and cause havoc. So, I get about 20 new registrants a day and approx 1-3 of those will be real. I just noticed the newest one's user ID at the bottom of the board and his user ID is "itchyNscratchy".......yikes. :D

Something in Joe_G.’s post, A Fantasy Poll for Old Judge Collectors, caught my attention. He mentioned in the part about Super Sized HOFers that the only known Old Judge cabinet of Jake Beckley was in a museum. What caught my attention was that I have had an Old Judge cabinet of Jake Beckley in my collection for about 20 years. I had traded a dealer at a card/autograph show in Richmond, Va, a Nolan Ryan rookie card for it. After a few e-mails with Joe and Jay Miller it appears I may have gotten the better part of the trade.:) They said that the only O. J. Beckley cabinet they knew of was in the Baseball Hall of Fame. That one is of Beckley on the St. Louis Whites in the fourth pose, “Stooping to catch ball knee high.” The one I have is the third pose, “Catch, hands held out neck high.” Jake is in a St. Louis uniform and listed as being on the “Pittsburghs.” It does have tape stains at both the top and the bottom of the cabinet. I thought you might like to see this “new” discovery. Sorry, not for sale.

These cards are: Lot #61-SGC60 Andrews and Lot #62-SGC60 Caruthers. On closer inspection, however, both cards have a small amount of paper loss from the text area of the back. My question is, can an SGC60 card have any paper loss?

Hi All. I finally went through my and my father's collection to decide what should stay or go. Among the better stuff, I also have thousands (50 800-count boxes) of duplicate cards from 1975 to the early 1990s and do not know what to do with them. I know this is a pre-war forum, but your opinions would be most appreciated.
As I see it, my options are:
1 - Try and sell them or trade them. Even though they are in great condition, I realize they are plentiful and inexpensive. Plus, shipping this volume of cards from Chicago to anywhere might be prohibitive. Also, who would want them? I doubt someone would trade for items on our pre-war wantlist for newer cards.
2 - Donate them to Goodwill or the like. Would anyone know what are the tax ramifications of this type of donation?
3 - I run a 67 team fall baseball league and thought about packaging them up and giving them to the approximately 900 kids from ages 9-12 who are playing in the league. Hopefully, this would get them started on collecting and/or collecting the older cards. To them, 1977 is vintage!
4 - Your thoughts or ideas.
Pluses and minuses on each of the above or any ideas you may have. Thanks for your time.

Hello Folks,

I am in the process of getting my T206 set graded for eventual sale. Sadly, I am missing the Big 6, but I have the remainder of the set.

As you would expect, conditions vary from Nr Mt to Poor.

What do you propose is the best way to maximize the value I obtain for the set, while balancing the amount of time and effort I have to put into selling the cards? Should I put the entire set up for auction or should I sell each of the HOF's individually and then sell the commons in large lots?

I am looking forward to your thoughts.

Thanks in advance,

John

Who Was America’s First Baseball Card Collector?

Next year we will celebrate our 35th year as a dedicated collector of rare baseball memorabilia and rare high grade baseball cards.

Over the course of the past 10,000 days we have talked with thousands of dealers and collectors, accumulated the largest collection of baseball card magazines and newsletters in the world, and tracked selected auction results from than 600 baseball memorabilia auctions.

While we are proud of our collection, what we have enjoyed most is the opportunity it has presented to study the history of baseball, and the history of the baseball memorabilia business.

It is our hope to complete a fully illustrated memoir about our hobby experiences which will focus on the collectors, early hobby activity which heretofore has not been well documented, and our experiences with infamous dealers and collectors . We will also look closely at the history of 100 organizations whose memorabilia and baseball card production shaped the hobby between 1900 and the present day.

In our view no topic will be as interesting than to dig back through our correspondence, and conversations and look at the early pioneers as well as to create our own list of The Hobby 200.

It is with this thought in mind that we want to share a brief biography of the person who Irv Lerner, in his legendary book, “Who’s Who in Card Collecting” named as the first great collector. This man was one of the original six members of the Baseball Card Collectors Hall of Fame (1969-70).
His Hobby Hall of Fame entry, in part, reads:

Walter Corson Glenmore, PA (1900-1966)

“Walter Corson was not only one of the first known card collectors, but he also had one of the largest collections including 616 different complete sets, plus 500 0ther complete sets among his 158,000 duplicates. …He wrote numerous articles and worked along side his friends, Charles Bray, Buck Barker and Jed Burdick to develop series check lists.

Walter was also a talented athlete, playing minor league baseball as a first baseman. In fact, in 1925 he led the Arizona State League in batting. He was invited to the Yankees training camp in St. Petersburg, but another young first basemen, Lou Gehrig, had the first base spot secured. After his baseball career ended, he served as a scout with the Cleveland Indians for eight years.

Sadly, in 1958 Colson learned he was suffering from cancer, he decided to run a classified ad in the Card Collectors bulletin which read:
“Due to my recent cancer operation and the uncertainties of life, I am putting my entire collection up for sale.

It was not long, before another legendary collector decided to purchase that collection. That collector was Frank Nagy.

This thread will expand on Jeff's topic a bit. Which 19th century sets or subsets are the most difficult to obtain an example from, exclusive of cost, and which types have the fewest surviving cards? These are two questions that may or may not have the same answer. Possible responses could include Four Base Hits, Just So, Lone Jack, Hess, Dog's Head, OJ California League, etc. Although no one knows the definitive answers, I was just curious about the combined experience of the board.
